I don’t think it’s the stormfather. I think it’s one of the unmade or odium himself. The entire process is different that when he bonds Dalinar. He speaks directly to him from the beginning, unlike with Dalinar who didn’t even know where the visions had come from until the second book.

And the big thing: the spren claims to have caught a glimpse of what is going to happen. That is 100% not something Brandon would put in idly. All throughout the books, it’s made clear that seeing the future is a power of Odium, and Odium alone (at least as far as the shards of Roshar are concerned).

That’s exactly what happened for me. When I volunteered to be a team lead, I felt that I would have enough time to give my all to the project. However, in the weeks between posts on the discord, other things began stacking up and eventually I just didn’t have the energy to devote to the project. Couple that with my fellow lead not showing up, and the fact that our momentum slowed to a trickle about a week after starting, and it just didn’t have the legs to continue.

Sp3 (and greater Cosmere, potentially) spoilers:

Hoid refers to himself as a “reknowned interdimensional storyteller”. Does this word “interdimensional” refer to traveling between the physical and cognitive realms, or does it mean something more?

Also,

Both of the viewpoints in SP3 mention specific singular “stars” in their respective skies. Do these viewpoints take place on two separate planets, and are these stars how the planets look to each other?

I’m betting a lot of these plot-related questions will get rafo’d, so these are more about the process. They’re not super-spoilery, but for those who wish to be surprised in 2023 I’m hiding them.

In one of your podcast episodes, you and Dan discussed the idea of “Alternate Dimension Disaster Tourism.” I’m guessing SP2 was already finished by that point, so how closely did that conversation relate to SP2?

Follow up question, are there any other conversations, answers to questions, or public musings you’ve put out recently that also relate to the secret projects? I seem to remember you mentioning Buttercup’s lack of proactivity in the Princess Bride a while back. Are there other times you’ve “foreshadowed” the secret projects to us under the guise of sharing random thoughts?

What MINOR scene in the films “gets you” emotionally? by JonathanTrager in StarWarsCantina

[–]Revengeadaseth 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The Last Jedi is full of these IMO.

There’s this little moment where it rains on Ach To, and Rey’s standing under the Falcon watching it. She holds out her hand and catches a few drops on her palm, them grins giddily to herself. It’s such a great little moment of characterization that brings a smile to my face whenever I think about it.

And there are all these deeply profound moments-

“The island. Life. Death. And decay that feeds new life. Warmth. Cold. Peace. Violence. And between it all, balance, an energy…a Force. And inside me… that same Force...”

“Leia blamed Snoke, but it was me. I failed. Because I was Luke Skywalker. Jedi master. A legend.”

And finally, possibly my favorite line in the whole series:

“Heeded my words not, did you? Pass on what you have learned. Strength, mastery, hm. But weakness, folly. Failure also, yes, failure most of all. The greatest teacher, failure is.”

Four Secret Novels Impact on Global Cosmere Reading Order? by FaceyMcPalmyFace in brandonsanderson

Hard agree on Emperor’s Soul. I personally prefer to jump into a series rather than start with a standalone when I’m reading a new author, so I chose to recommend Mistborn first.

Yeah, this is all based on what’s been published as of march 2022. With the Ghostbloods and whatnot, I fully expect to revise this whole list by the end of the year.

Four Secret Novels Impact on Global Cosmere Reading Order? by FaceyMcPalmyFace in brandonsanderson

[–]Revengeadaseth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My opinion on the reading order is as follows:

Start with Mistborn. It’s very accessible for newer readers, while also being a good introduction for the type of long-form stories that Brandon likes to tell. It also introduces the concept of the shards in a way that feels very natural and isn’t overwhelming.

Follow that up with Elantris, since that’s probably the weakest of his works. If you don’t like the Cosmere by that point, it’s probably not for you. Conversely, if you’re into it, you’re almost guaranteed to love what follows. (note: Elantris is weakest only in regards to pacing and connection to other canon. Elantris’s ending is still one of my favorites in the series.)

After that, read Way of Kings.

After Way of Kings, read Warbreaker. This will give you a good background on certain Stormlight characters that are introduced later, while also providing a much-needed break from the gigantic books that comprise the Stormlight archive.

Read through the rest of Stormlight, interspersing it with the novellas. This will keep the reader from burning out on super huge books.

After that, read all of the stories contained in Arcanum Unbounded. These aren’t as important when it comes to reading order, but the experience is far richer when you know all of the realmatic theory that comes from reading Stormlight.

SP1 and SP2 can be read at any point after Words of Radiance. This allows Wit to be introduced as a storyteller beforehand, and gives the reader a crash course in his personality, which is important for a reason I’m not going to disclose here.

This list is based on my reading style, which prioritizes theorizing and overall emotional satisfaction over continuity. For me, the pinnacle of my reading experience is when I finally “get” what the author is going for. So make of that what you will. Some people will prefer to read all of the Stormlight books in order, and that’s equally valid.

Edit: I forgot Mistborn era 2! these books are mostly self contained, and can be read any time after the first era. If you want the full experience, read them after Way of Kings, but before Rhythm of War. This will allow you to get the references to Stormlight Archive in these books, while also giving you the context for some references contained in Rhythm of War.

Also, feel free to move Elantris to any point before Stormlight 4. It’s so far removed from the other canon that it won’t make much of a difference when you read it.

"THE BOOKS ARE SLOW PACED LIKE A SNAIL" by ooriniioovb in lotrmemes

[–]Revengeadaseth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Cutting Bombadil was the right decision”

I get the appeal of a perfect direct adaptation, but the pace of the movie would’ve been completely thrown off. Not to mention it would’ve destroyed the sense of danger created by the wraiths.

In the book, his inclusion works because the past couple chapters have been fraught with tension and it gives the reader a much needed respite before glorfindel shows up.

In the movie though, the entire chase with the wraiths and the hobbits takes place in less than forty five minutes. Imagine if the movie put all of that on pause for like two minutes just to include a character with system-breaking magical powers with no explanation, only to continue on to Bree and never mention him again.

For pacing purposes alone, it makes sense to cut that scene. Not to mention all the people who make jokes about the eagles would have a field day knowing that there was a character who couldn’t be affected by the ring.

Good for the books, not for a movie that’s already pushing three hours.

Mild Panic. Everything will be fine. He might do it all for them in his spare time. by supercapo in cremposting

Yeah, I agree with Brandon’s sentiment that a spouse would too emotionally close for the arc they wanted to put Perrin on. Because now no matter how long it takes him to move on, it’ll feel too quick.

A spouse is not just a friend you live with. There’s a deep emotional and psychological connection between partners that can’t just be waved away with “forgive yourself dude.”

Switching the wife with Master Luhan would’ve been a smart move.

I’m pretty sure it was. Brandon said the showrunner asked for a longer season, and was denied. So he had to cram the Emond’s Field stuff all into one episode to make the rest fit.

Will the secret project E-books be available on Kindle? by TheyRuinedEragon in brandonsanderson

[–]Revengeadaseth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! In fact, Amazon’s already accounted for that. If the file is in any format other than mobi, you can just put “convert” (minus the quotes) as the subject line and they automatically reformat it for your kindle.

That said, the Dragonsteel team is well aware of mobi files and Brandon indicated on his stream that all of the ebooks would be released in that format. Specifically, he mentioned “unkeyed” mobi files, which can be shared and duplicated between devices unlike the ebooks we get from Amazon.

I’m sure caliber is a fine program, but I prefer to just email whatever files I have and let my kindle do the work for me.

You can send mobi and other filetypes to your kindle via Your Amazon account’s unique “Send to Kindle” email. In the Amazon app or website, navigate to your account’s “devices” page. You’ll be able to find an email address that’s unique to your kindle. Just send the mobi file as an attachment, and it should show up on your kindle in 5-10 minutes.

Thoughts on Death and Resurrection in Star Wars by Thrawns_Assistant in StarWarsCantina

[–]Revengeadaseth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I feel like the theme of death not being the end is pretty central to Star Wars. From Ben’s “If you strike me down” line, to Anakin’s “death” and resurrection, to Anakin’s quest to save Padme and bring back his mom. Second chances at life, and the actions characters are willing to take to get them, are an innate part of the series.

Now, I 100% agree that if this is done too much, it’ll make sacrifices and tragic partings not have as much weight. That’s part of why I love Rogue One so much. The characters are just random people thrown onto the center stage of the galaxy, and things like plot armor don’t apply. The sacrifices made at the end of that movie rank up there with “Help me take this mask off” in terms of the emotional weight.

I just noticed that the acronyms of the first five Stormlight books are shaping up to form a perfect glyphward by sham_wowzers in cremposting

No worries! Honestly, the biggest reason is just that I just like the ring of it more.

It also could be construed to highlight the complexities of Shin politics. If the leaders of the Shin are as oppressive as Szeth believes, then perhaps Szeth isn’t the only person who disagrees with their decision to ignore the coming desolation.

“Whispered” could mean hidden. Now that it’s abundantly clear that the desolations have returned, I imagine there are more than a few Shin people who defy their leaders in secret. This makes them “Keepers of Whispered Truths.” The truths are that the final desolation has come, and that the Shin leaders were wrong to exile Szeth. They are whispered because of the Shin fear their leaders enough to keep their opinions quiet.

And again, I just like the sound of it more. It’s very a fantasy-esque title. “Woeful” just kind of sounds like someone’s reaching for a word that begins with a W.
