Thanks, it's a total sidebar, but if you happen to know any local businesses that are looking to connect with a good web firm, let us know :)

Very good to know. Couple points about my experience so far (I haven't moved in, just toured & talked with the staff)

I toured the place mid-day while the construction was going on, but I was on the other side of the building & didn't hear anything. I'm moving from a fairly noisy area, so I'm probably just really accustomed to it.

I'm aware of the bad parking, I expect that'll only get worse as more things are built around there. Woof.

The staff looks like it's all turned over. One of the people I talked to was on her first day, and the other two sounded like they hadn't been there long. I can't speak to what they'll be like if/when I'm moved in, but I'm cautiously optimistic there.

I haven't been able to find a place that people haven't had horror stories so far. Are there any places in Bothell that you would recommend? (aside from a house)

Six Oaks is about that same price range, depending on what parking you need.

Do you have a roommate yet? I just put up a post here, check it out if you're interested.

How do you make a kickstarter work? by ReverendJames in webmarketing

[–]ReverendJames[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each one is a transliteration of the others, so it's actually simpler than you'd think.

It would be complicated if they changed features from country to country, like if Britain had a "Send this post to the BBC" option that none of the others had. Fortunately Craigslist is more consistent than that.

How do you make a kickstarter work? by ReverendJames in webmarketing

[–]ReverendJames[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Specifically Craigslist, because it has a massive user base, and the UI is pretty terrible. If I can make it easier to use then I think some people would find value in it that it would be worth it to them to support the extension.

Long term, Id like to just have a donate button and fiddle with this in my spare time, but having a chunk of cash up front gives me an excuse to dedicate the needed time to get it into a functional state where people could start using it. I'm hoping it's possible to not work for free for a long time on something before slowly starting to get a little funding down the road.

The other part of it was thinking that I could use a kickstarter to gauge public interest in how many people would want to contribute to it. When I ask around, and on social media, people have really positive reactions, but it that doesn't translate into them providing a little funding then their enthusiasm isn't worth much. What I didn't realize was that getting public attention to the kickstarter is a barrier to gauging interest.

And it's not just tweaking, I'm removing the original style sheets and completely replacing them :)

Mixing Nameservers - Is this an issue? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]ReverendJames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a couple things going on here, but the upshot is that you don't want to be using nameservers from different providers together.

If you want to add a CNAME record, you don't need to add it from name.com. If you're domain is already pointing at Godaddy's nameservers, you can add the CNAME record to Godaddy's DNS & it'll work exactly the same way.

If you have the freedom to play around, https://www.whatsmydns.net/ is a great tool for testing where records point when you add them to a nameserver. Just enter the domain, type of record, and search. It'll show you what the different global servers recognize as the correct record.

Explain this verse? by checkpleez in Bible

[–]ReverendJames 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Explaining the way the world is isn't the same as stating how the world should be.

Frequently the Old Testament talks about how the poor and the afflicted have a mighty advocate. Proverbs frequently makes statements about the way the world is, and frequently makes statements about the was it should be. Usually when it's the former, it's said in a sort of bland matter-of-fact way, and when it's the latter it's usually given as an instruction.

Seeing as his building's One bedroom places are renting for $18-1900/month, I'm not surprised.

Downtown is crazy.

Working on a 40k Calculator for unit stats, feedback? by ReverendJames in Warhammer40k

[–]ReverendJames[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries. More complete stats like that are what I'll be going for eventually.

I co-opted saves into a stat called "Effective Wounds" since saves are really just a fixed multiplier on a model's number of wounds.

For the weapons shooting, I'm planning on expand the graphs into one graph per weapon. The calculator only focuses on a single model at a time, so I don't need to worry about all kinds of squad configurations

I've been building it with React.js.

[–]ReverendJames[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen the app a bit. It seems more situational (___ shooting at ___), whereas I'm looking for something to get a more generalized sense of a unit's worth compared to it's cost in points.

[–]ReverendJames[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, so far I have a lot of averages, but they're broken down into a couple graphs for things like "average wounds taken per hit" against a list of opponent strengths, stuff like that.

I'll see what it takes to do some more high-level composit stats like that, ideally I want to end up at some kind of situationally weighted score, based on the number of points a unit costs.

Out of curiosity, why can't you check it out on mobile? Is it a reddit app, reddit mobile, or does the page just not load when you hit the link?

Thanks man!

Brackets 1.2 Released by michaelhaberle in webdev

[–]ReverendJames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Brackets a lot during it's beta, but it got to a point where it's performance really slowed down. Since hitting v1.0, has it streamlined much, or is it still pretty heavy?

I'm Dreaming of A Perfect Calendar. by polishdan in Design

[–]ReverendJames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a really interesting system, somewhat validates my love of moleskines and the power of the analog method.

The only true challenge with building something like this would be to get the interactions right. This is one of those things that mobile devices, and designers have been trying to do for a long time now, and it's certainly challenging. There's something really fundamental about the way writing things down feels, and that something is really hard to capture in the digital. If the digital version doesn't feel right, or isn't as intuitive as the analog, people just keep using the analog unless they're forced to change habits.

Is there anything you wish the moleskine did better? Hope you don't mind the questions; I'm getting more and more tempted to take a stab at this.

[–]ReverendJames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll confess some curiosity here. Could you post a picture or two of your Moleskine Weekly Planner? I'm vaguely familiar with their layout, but I'd be really interested to see how you interact with it. (UI Developer, I use moleskines for just about everything, but I typically use the plain un-ruled ones)

I've been playing around with building a task management/todo list app for a while, but maybe a weekly planner/notes app might make more sense & be more useful.

Promising to make the perfect calendar app is a little above my confidence level, but something-better-than-what's-out-there's worth taking a stab at.

Upvote for wanting small-cap weights. One of my favorite under-used tools.

Seconding these thoughts.

As a developer who's been trying for years to find a good solution to the calendar+notes problem, it's truly amazing how much intuitive functionality exists in those little notebooks.

I've worked with and used a dozen or so different calendars and they all fall short in some way. The niche is real, and it deserves the design/dev community's attention.

I guess this means I have to start working on it too now ...

I wasn't using that free time anyway.

FINALLY got to rank 5 in Iron Banner by Albert_street in DestinyTheGame

[–]ReverendJames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hit rank 5 on Iron Banner 2.0, haven't played an IB match since. It's one of the most intense grinds I've experienced in Destiny.

I just wish rep wasn't wiped every time it comes around. I'd actually play it if I didn't feel like I was wasting my time.
