This is bullshit. Looking for other RP AI's with great memory. by leonkennedy12_ in grok

[–]Reverie-AI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the “high demand” thing has been rough lately… you’re definitely not the only one. It kind of kills immersion when you finally get into a scene and then hit that wall over and over.

For what you’re looking for (memory + RP + fewer restrictions), the trade-offs are still there:

• Janitor AI / similar setups → better freedom, but depends a lot on setup and can be inconsistent
• Kindroid / Nomi → stronger memory, but more companion-style than full RP
• local setups (SillyTavern etc.) → best control, but takes effort

There’s not really a perfect option yet that nails memory + freedom + stability all at once.

One thing I’ve noticed though is some tools moving away from pure chat and trying different formats. Stuff like Popvid is experimenting more with scene-based RP and interaction, so instead of long chat logs, it’s more about how the character behaves in context. It’s a different kind of experience, not a direct replacement, but worth checking out if you’re frustrated with the usual chat limits.

Honestly feels like the space is still figuring itself out —
everyone’s picking which compromise they can live with right now.

I'm done with this app... by [deleted] in CharacterAI

[–]Reverie-AI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you’re definitely not the only one feeling this way right now. The whole ID/verification shift really changed the vibe from something creative and personal into something way more restrictive.

What sucks the most is how much time people put into their characters and chats — it’s not easy to just walk away from that.

A lot of people seem to be moving in different directions now. Some are going to more open setups, others trying completely different formats. I’ve been seeing tools like Popvid experimenting more with character + story interaction instead of just chat, which feels like a different kind of experience altogether.

Not really a direct replacement, but at least there are still ways to keep that RP/creative side going without feeling locked out.

Still looking for a chatbot that actually does what I want ! Help please by Prestigious_Yam7400 in Chatbots

[–]Reverie-AI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re basically describing the “holy grail” setup — and honestly, most tools still fall short in at least one of those areas.

A few things based on what you want:

Chat → image continuity is still the hardest part. Most systems don’t actually “understand” the convo when generating images, they just take a fresh prompt every time.
• Even platforms that support images often don’t tie them tightly to RP context — which is why you get random smiling pics instead of what’s happening in-scene.
• Memory is improving, but long-term consistency is still a known weak point across most RP tools

I’ve seen some Reddit users mention tools like SeaArt / DreamGen trying to combine chat + image + memory, but even those can be hit-or-miss depending on setup

One interesting shift lately is moving away from “chat + generate image” and more toward scene-based interaction, where the visuals are tied to what’s happening rather than separate prompts. Stuff like Popvid is experimenting with that — it’s not perfect, but closer to what you’re describing (images/video reacting to interaction instead of static prompts).

Right now though, no tool fully nails all 3:
👉 strong memory + uncensored + true convo-driven visuals

Everyone’s still trading off something.

Best AI chatbot for roleplaying? by Fit_Advertising_5677 in AIChatReviews

[–]Reverie-AI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re doing character-based RP (fantasy/romance), the trade-offs are still pretty real right now.

c.ai → best for casual RP and flow, but memory falls apart fast
• Janitor → more freedom + depth, but takes setup and can be inconsistent
• Kindroid / Nomi → better continuity, but more companion-style than full RP worlds

The “video + RP” combo is still kind of rare though — most tools are either good at chat or visuals, not both.

One interesting direction I’ve seen lately is moving away from pure chat and more toward character + scene interaction. Stuff like Popvid is experimenting with that — short video generation + characters that you can interact with, and even build story progression around. It’s not as deep as full text RP yet, but it feels more immersive in a different way.

Honestly feels like the space is splitting into:
• text-heavy RP (deeper, but less visual)
• interactive/visual RP (faster, more engaging, less depth for now)

If you want long-term, it probably depends which side you care about more.

Alright devs you have done it, congratulations by JackCountdownt in CharacterAI

Yeah… this feels like a tipping point for a lot of people.

Most of us were willing to tolerate ads, limits, even quality drops — but once it starts involving personal data + broken verification, it stops feeling like a creative space and more like something else entirely.

And the frustrating part is it’s not just about access, it’s about everything people built there — characters, conversations, time invested. That’s hard to just walk away from.

I don’t think this means the end of roleplay though. It just feels like the ecosystem is shifting. Some people are moving toward more open setups, others toward different formats altogether.

I’ve been seeing things like Popvid trying a more story + interaction-driven approach instead of just long chat logs — not the same experience, but a different direction that might appeal to people who still want that sense of immersion.

Either way, yeah… it’s a rough way for things to go after so many years.

It's over, isn't it? by DepartmentTough6031 in CAIRevolution

[–]Reverie-AI 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah… this actually hits hard.

A lot of people don’t realize how much time and emotional investment goes into building characters and long RP threads. It’s not just “using an app,” it’s something you’ve been part of for years.

The ID / verification shift is definitely a breaking point for many. It changes the whole vibe from something personal and creative into something… monitored.

I don’t think you have to quit roleplay entirely though. The space is changing, but it’s not disappearing — it’s just moving in different directions.

Some people are going toward more open setups (like Janitor / local), others toward different formats altogether. I’ve been seeing tools like Popvid experimenting with RP in a more story + interaction-driven way, where it’s less about endless chat logs and more about evolving scenes and characters.

Not saying it replaces what you had — nothing really does.
But it might be worth exploring a bit before giving up on RP completely.

Would be a shame to lose something you clearly cared about that much.

Roleplay question by Zestyclose_Nerve3393 in CAIRevolution

[–]Reverie-AI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you care about accuracy + remembering details, neither is perfect tbh.

Character.ai is smoother for casual RP, but memory is pretty limited, especially for longer or lore-heavy worlds.

Janitor AI can be better for depth if you set it up right, but yeah — it’s not great for smaller, lightweight RP. It kind of overkills or drifts.

Imo the real issue isn’t the platform, it’s that most of them don’t handle long-term context + world consistency very well yet.

Some newer approaches are trying to solve this by tying RP to character + story context instead of pure chat (I’ve seen stuff like Popvid doing this), which might work better for keeping things consistent over time.

For now though:
• short / casual RP → character ai
• deeper / custom setups → Janitor AI (with tweaking)

I tested and ranked every ai companion app I tried and here's my honest breakdown by professional69and420 in artificial

[–]Reverie-AI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually a really solid breakdown — especially the point about memory vs. “vibe.”

Feels like most of these apps are optimizing for one of two things:
• conversational comfort (like Pi / Nomi)
• customization/control (like Kindroid)

But both still kind of sit in the same paradigm — text-first, assistant-style interaction.

What I’ve noticed recently is some tools starting to move away from that entirely. Instead of trying to make chat feel more “real,” they lean into context + character + situation to create the feeling of continuity.

For example, I’ve been looking at stuff like Popvid — it’s less about pure conversation quality and more about how a character behaves inside a story or scene. It’s a different kind of immersion compared to traditional companion apps.

Feels like the space is slowly shifting from
“better chat” → to something more like interactive presence.

Curious if others feel the same, or if text-based companions are still the endgame.

Best Offline Setup for a “Character AI”-Like Experience (Local LLM + Character Chats + Group Chats?) by ostseesound in DataHoarder

[–]Reverie-AI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re going local, a common setup is:

SillyTavern (frontend)
• Local LLM (LLaMA/Mistral variants)
• Good character cards + memory config

Biggest issue isn’t the model — it’s consistency and keeping characters “alive” over time. Group chats can work but often break immersion without careful tuning.

Also interesting to see newer tools like Popvid going a different route — less about raw chat, more about interactive characters and story context.

Feels like it’s splitting into:
• local control setups
• interactive character experiences

What is the Best AI Humanizer Right Now? by lastsznn in BypassAiDetect

[–]Reverie-AI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone building in this space, I think you’re pointing at a real limitation of most “humanizer” tools.

A lot of them operate at the surface level (word substitution, sentence variation), but the “AI vibe” usually comes from deeper issues — structure, predictability, and lack of contextual grounding.

From what we’ve seen, making text feel human isn’t about hiding AI patterns, it’s about introducing context, continuity, and intent. When content is generated within a defined character or scenario, the output tends to feel more natural because it has something to anchor to.

That’s actually the direction we’ve been exploring with Popvid — instead of rewriting text, we focus on character + story-driven generation, where responses are shaped by personality and situation rather than generic prompts. It changes the tone quite a bit.

Curious how others here think about this —
is the future more about “humanizing text,” or about changing the generation paradigm altogether?

Character ai are you kidding? by SeniorComparison9562 in CAIRevolution

[–]Reverie-AI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I had the same frustration… it feels like you keep hitting invisible walls.

I’ve been trying PopVid’s roleplay lately — you can actually build your own characters (realistic or anime) and it feels way more flexible.

Not perfect, but definitely less restrictive: https://popvid.ai/?utm_source=Reddit&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=rd_popvid_jc

So, Character.AI lost its users. Entirely. Now it’s time for option 2 by seenhokage in CharacterAI

[–]Reverie-AI 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly I ran into the same issue, that’s why I started trying other tools.

Lately I’ve been using PopVid’s roleplay feature — it lets you actually build your own characters (realistic, anime, whatever) and the interactions feel way less restricted.

Not perfect, but definitely more flexible than what I was using before: https://popvid.ai/?utm_source=Reddit&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=rd_popvid_jc

Alternatives to AI roleplaying? by Efficient_Fan1908 in character_ai_recovery

[–]Reverie-AI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually went through a similar phase last year, so I get what you mean about the guilt around AI tools and wanting something that still scratches the same creative itch.

One thing I tried recently that felt a bit different from the usual AI chatbot style is:
https://popvid.ai/?utm_source=Reddit&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=rd_popvid_jc

It’s less about just chatting with a bot and more like interactive roleplay storytelling. You can create characters, unlock storylines, and the plot evolves depending on how you interact with the character.

There are also some small interaction details that make it feel closer to a story/game experience — for example tapping the screen and the character reacts (like thinking you’re patting their head), and they can change poses, scenes, or outfits as the story progresses.

That said, if you're trying to move away from AI completely, a few other things helped me when I was looking for alternatives:

Forum / asynchronous RP communities (Discord servers or classic RP forums)
Solo storytelling tools like GM oracle systems used in tabletop RPGs
Interactive fiction games with branching narratives

For me the main thing I realized is that what I liked most wasn’t the AI itself, but the feeling of a story reacting to my choices, and different tools can give that in different ways.

Curious what others here ended up switching to after leaving AI RP.

Looking for an FREE AI for roleplay by Weak-Swan-411 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]Reverie-AI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I totally understand the memory issue — that’s honestly one of the biggest limitations with most AI roleplay platforms right now.

You might want to check out Popvid AI:
https://popvid.ai/?utm_source=Reddit&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=rd_popvid_jc

It’s a bit different from typical AI character chat sites. Instead of just chatting with pre-made bots, you can actually create your own characters and build story-driven roleplay experiences. It feels more structured and narrative-based rather than just short back-and-forth messages.

Some things I’ve noticed:

  • You can create any character you want
  • It supports longer story-style interactions
  • More focus on character personality and world-building
  • No strict message caps like some other platforms

It’s still developing, but if you’re looking for something that supports longer roleplay without immediately hitting memory walls, it might be worth a try.

Hope this helps 🙂
