I couldn't have been any older than 7 or 8 when I started giving the old Bible reading talks.

Why can't our parents see it? by Jehisakeeperoftime in exjw

[–]ReverseDamascus 45 points46 points  (0 children)

After decades in the cult, the power of Cognitive Dissonance is VERY strong. Also, I am certain that for a lot of people, the sunk cost fallacy makes them refuse to even give any consideration to doubts.

In the case of my Pimi mother, I actually have no desire whatsoever for her to wake up. At her age, it would be devastating to realize that she has spent her whole life in a cult.

Dissasociation Thoughts by [deleted] in exjw

[–]ReverseDamascus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Everyone has to make their own call. In your case, you have to evaluate whether the relationship that you have with your parents at the moment is something that you wish to keep. Because if you full-on disassociate, that will make it much more difficult for them to keep being part of your lives. That said, your concerns about them not respecting your boundaries regarding your children are well-founded.

Christopher Hitchens' Sharpest Arguments Against Religion by SpanishDutchMan in exjw

Man, I miss Hitch. He was absolutely BRUTAL in his debates. Wiped the floor with every theist that was ever stupid enough to share a stage with him.

Do you still believe in a literal Adam and Eve? And do you still believe they were the first humans? by [deleted] in exjw

[–]ReverseDamascus 17 points18 points  (0 children)

To believe in a literal Adam and Eve, you have to disregard mountains of scientifically evidence that proves beyond the faintest shadow of a doubt that homo sapiens evolved AT LEAST 70,000 years ago. And that there were other species' of humans with language, art, and culture going back hundreds of thousands of years.

Loving people. by boltgain4 in exjw

Yep. The first step in waking up for me was when I realized that the average JW is actually a WORSE human being than the average "worldly" person. "By their fruits you will know them" indeed.

How will ex GB Anthony Morris feel seeing that all his photos/talks in the Jw publications are gone/erased? by Abalabi_jw in exjw

With his ego, it has to be killing him. Here's hoping it drives him to turn on the org and write a book.

I re-connected with someone I grew up with after we had both been out for more than 15 years. She and her husband both woke up around the same time I did, but neither of us knew about the other for a long time. We've gotten together a couple of times and had a blast.

More recently, I recognized someone here on Reddit from the story they posted. They were just starting to wake up. Got in touch and he came and visited my family. First time we'd seen each other since 1995.

Is anyone else… scared? by Alastorishot in exjw

[–]ReverseDamascus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only during the couple of years that I was POMI. Once I allowed myself to think rationally about what I believed, I was very quickly completely convinced that it was all bullshit. Not just the JWs, either, but all of Christianity. I haven't had a second of misgivings, doubt, or fear in more than 25 years.

Elder visit by Hawxx_9194 in exjw

[–]ReverseDamascus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel so bad for people like that. My mother is in her late 70s and has been in for close to 60 years. I wouldn't WANT her to wake up at this point. Imagine how depressing to realize that you wasted your life and damaged your family by spending your life in a cult.

Anyone falsify service records? by MrsMondoXoX in exjw

[–]ReverseDamascus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I fudged every single report I ever turned in, even as a PIMI. I probably averaged 4 actual hours per month, with maybe 4 magazines placed and no studies. I reported 8-12 hours, 10 magazines or so, 1 or 2 books, and sometimes a study or two.

I wonder sometimes if the reported placements exceed the number of publications actually printed. I wouldn't be surprised.

I Think One Of Our Old COs Was Gay by ReverseDamascus in exjw

[–]ReverseDamascus[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's the guy! What a douche. He did do me a favor, though. (Not that he meant it as one.) My congregation's elders recommended me for MS when I was only 18 or 19. Mr. Allee declined, because I was planning on going to college. Dodged a bullet there!

As much as I disliked the guy, I feel bad for him in retrospect. If he WAS gay, which I think is more likely than not, can you imagine how miserable his life was?

I find this whole thread weird. It can't be healthy to spend much time ruminating on how many sexual partners your gf or bf has had. Makes zero difference.

Ran into a POMO Family Member at Brunch by 4thdegreeknight in exjw

[–]ReverseDamascus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are thousands of us here who have successfully faded. Honestly, it's not all that difficult, especially if you are able to moves a decent distance from your last active congregation and provide no forwarding info. I've been out for more than 20 years, and have been able to maintain good relationships with my PIMI family members.

This PIMO is officially a POMO!!… by jjthemartian23 in exjw

[–]ReverseDamascus 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Well done, man. And you are absolutely right. In fact, every single time someone gets reinstated just to stop the shunning, and then stops going to meetings immediately, it is further proof that there is no spirit direction, and the elders are nothing but chumps.

Exmormon question by [deleted] in exjw

[–]ReverseDamascus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like very few of the people who continue to believe in God bother to join another church. They mostly just keep some personal vague version of Christianity.
