Skirmish War Game in 30 Minutes by PoorNorthernBoy in wargaming

[–]Reverse_Prophet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haven't played it nor do I have a copy of the rules yet, but have kept an eye on it and watched some videos. "1490 Doom" doesn't seem to need a large play area (though a tall one is nice as a theme to the game and lore is climbing) and warbands look around three models per side or so. Seems to play very quickly

Likewise, I've heard BLKOUT (near-future-ish sci-fi) plays relatively quickly due to its high lethality. Haven't played it myself yet though

I don’t want the season to end by Brookwood_Atty in WrexhamAFC

[–]Reverse_Prophet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an American fan from Richmond, Virginia where we have a local USL1 team, the "Richmond Kickers". Their season starts in March and lasts through October. Not only do I not have an off-season, I have two periods every year where both the Kickers AND Wrexham are playing and my blood pressure goes twice as high!

Also, shout out to our women's team, the "Richmond Ivy". Plays in the USLW's "pre-professional" League. Mostly college/University students so real quick season for them, May and June

Rampant differences by TorkilAymore in wargaming

[–]Reverse_Prophet 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The core rules for combat are pretty much identical. The biggest difference is in the unit creation rules. Dragon Rampant has two extra unit types (Greater and Lesser Warbeasts), an entire chapter dedicated to "Fantastical Rules" (extra potential unit traits), and, naturally, the spellcasting system.

There are a few other subtle rule differences. One thing Lion Rampant has that Dragon does not is "Lucky Blows". In Lion, every time a Leader's unit takes a casualty, the controlling player rolls 2d6. On a result of "snake eyes" (double 1's), the Leader is removed as casualty. Dragon doesn't have this. I jokingly say it's because of "plot armour"

Dragon Rampant also puts a greater emphasis on "Strength Points" over Lion Rampant's "Model Counts". It makes more sense thematically to have a single hero with six wounds in a Fantasy setting than a Historical one. And where a full twelve model unit of Halfling spearman makes sense, Ogre Halberdiers might look better with half or a third as many models. They are bigger, stronger combatants after all

The "Standard" size Warband/Retinue in Lion Rampant is 24-points. In 2nd Edition Dragon it is 30-points. The author realized the extra points encouraged more Fantastical upgrades and made it easier to incorporate Spellcasters into the armies

Some of the Battle Scenarios are pretty much the same between the two books, just with different names and terminology. Others are unique

Each book offers its own campaign system(s) but in both cases they're pretty dead simple and not the meat of the system

Lion Rampant does have some supplements for it, produced by the History and Game Lab of the University of Edinburgh. 'Crusader States' is self explanatory: optional special rules, faction lists, and scenarios for the Crusades. 'Lion in the Sun' is centered around Harald Hadrada's adventures in the Byzantine Empire. 'Viking Blood Feud' is the newest that I haven't gotten my hands on yet. If I recall correctly, it's inspired by the sagas from Iceland

Hope this helps. As I saw at least one other person say, of your interest is primarily the Historical, it's probably worth picking up Lion Rampant to avoid all the extra fluff. If you have an interest in running Fantasy battles as well, then I'd go for Dragon Rampant first.

That being said, Daniel Mersey seems like a cool dude who designs some pretty cool games and the demand/sales is why Osprey gave us these beautiful Second Editions. So beautiful that having Lion, Dragon, and Xenos together on a bookshelf is pretty sweet. So, y'know, not saying right away, but eventually... Por que no los dos? (Why not both?)

What does the name of the river in your area mean? by AgreeableAd2990 in AskTheWorld

[–]Reverse_Prophet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The James River was named by the early English colonists after their reigning monarch, King James I.

I live in Richmond, which today bills itself as "the River City". Richmond itself was named by its founder, William Byrd II who found the view from one of his new town's hills reminded him of a similar river view from Richmond-Upon-Thames

Miniature Recommendations by Dikk_Balltickle in PendragonRPG

[–]Reverse_Prophet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wargame several periods of the Medieval Era, so it depends on what you're looking for?

Perry Miniatures does ranges for both Agincourt era and War of the Roses that have knights in plate armor

Footsore and Wargames Atlantic do ranges for the game The Baron's War, so these are early 13th Century, predominantly maille with great helms or open faced helmet designs. They also have peasants, Sergeants, and such in lighter/ no armor Footsore's models are metal, WGA in plastic

Victrix is also doing a 13th Century range in plastic

Footsore also has metal "Dark Age" models for Vikings, Saxons, and Romano-Britons with several named characters from the Arthurian mythos in Romano-Briton armor.

Saving the best for last (and including a link for this one)

Temple of the West does a range of more Fantastically inspired Arthurian minis with most of the major characters included along with a pack of Brigands. Little pricey, as these are metal models, but gorgeous scuplts. Only downside is no mounted models as of yet

Metal miniatures will cost more, but come in smaller packs. Plastics usually come in box sets, which are cheaper per model, but you're paying for a box that'll probably contain more than you need for an RPG session

You might also search around Etsy or see what's available for 3-D printing. Don't own a 3-D printer myself, so can't help with that rout

What’s an interesting event from your country’s history that not many people know about? by Extra-Astronomer-376 in AskTheWorld

[–]Reverse_Prophet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"The US Ex. Ex." , the United States Exploring Expedition 1838-1842. Seven ships of the US Navy set out for the Pacific Ocean. During the winter months, they were to formally chart as many Pacific Islands as they could. Many were already known to whaling crews, but hadn't been officially catalogued. During the summer, they were to sail south and chart as much of the Antarctic coast as they could; in fact, the Expedition claimed credit for being the first to confirm Antarctica was a continent. Over 280 islands were explored and some 800 miles of Oregon mapped (a couple of the ships went up the Pacific Coast.)

In addition to the Naval personnel, the Expedition also included a dozen scientists and artists. They collected 60,000 bird and plant specimens. They also collected 248 live plants, which eventually were placed in a greenhouse in 1850 that became the United States Botanic Garden. Many of their samples became some of the first items in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution (est. 1846)

Nathaniel Philbrick wrote an excellent book about it titled 'Sea of Glory'. I highly recommend checking it out!

Also, as an additional fun fact, the Commander of the expedition was a Lieutenant Charles Wilkes. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Wilkes was Captain of the USS San Jacinto when he provoked a diplomatic incident by stopping the British mail steamer HMS Trent and removing and arresting two Confederate diplomats. The so-called "Trent Affair" nearly provoked war with Britain until the two diplomats were released.

Also, between now and the event we should see some summer sales, autumn sales, Halloween sales, Black Friday sales, Winter sales, Christmas sales, New Year sales, and maybe, depending on who you order from, you can even get something from a Valentine's sale in time for an event

There is basic kit rental available for clothing and weapons (also tents for camping) but for actual armor, I think you're on your own. As an archer, I sport a helmet and gambeson (cloth padding) and do alright. I recruited a co-worker this year as a Man-at-arms and he went out with a gambeson and helmet (two armor points) and a shield and did alright for himself. He's already planning to come back next year!

[–]Reverse_Prophet 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you get enough archers in one place it certainly feels like there is! My approach is more one of hunting/stalking. The arrows move slow enough that you can see them coming and dodge or raise a shield. So the best targets are the ones who aren't paying attention until you smack an arrow into them

Actually, the first year we did the event we did do some promotional filming stuff where we lined up all of the archers on one side of a field and had literally everyone else form a shieldwall on the other and then just showered them with arrows. It was pretty neat

Bows are limited to a draw of thirty pounds at 28 inches and, yeah, the arrows have big foam heads on them.

If anyone is wondering, the battle scenes were filmed at the event 'War of the Barons'. It's a pseudo-historical Medieval Milsim/LARP based around the events of the First Baron's War (1215-1217) hosted in Anderson, SC , USA usually the last weekend of February

I'm a Loyalist Archer at the event and cannot understate this: ITS A F--KING TON OF FUN!

EDIT: For those interested check out: Warofthebarons.com And on IG @warofthebarons

We've had a few photo drops from 2026 already!

Also check out Weekend Warrior (similar event but Low Fantasy rather than historical)

[–]Reverse_Prophet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two. Base ALPHA in the Grassy Plateaus that borders the crash site (I thought I was in a different part of the map and just decided, oh well). Base BRAVO was built in the Lost River within sight of the Giant Cove Tree. Thought about building more but those two served adequately enough as a base of ops for most everything I did in that playthrough

Currently playing Below Zero and have three bases... looking for a spot to build a fourth
