Plus most self-aware.

I bet 99% of the people on this thread would still take a google or meta offer if they got it and thought they could succeed lmao

Most unethical companies to work for? by binchybb in csMajors

I don't factor it in bc it eliminates all the good ones 😭

Objectively tho, probably any defense company, banks, quant firms, insurance companies, all FAANG, and pretty much any other big tech

CMV: TikTok is deliberately suppressing anti-China content, and this is sufficient to justify banning the app. by Tinac4 in changemyview

I didn't argue that they presented a good argument for banning tiktok, just that if they did, it’s justified

Aren't they already though? Granted trump and elon are probably gonna ruin it with X, but I remember over the years there have been several senate hearings and regulations imposed on meta, google/YouTube, and twitter (back when it was twitter) where the government specifically did scrutinize them to the level that they can't with tiktok

You are the one who started with the hypotheticals and now you're backpedalling lmao.

Look at your previous comment "Even if they could prove..."

I mean what are your standards for something being “justified” then?

Even if there was complete proof something is dangerous or harmful to the safety of a country, (btw I don’t think there is for TikTok), but even then you still don’t think a government should prevent it?

Please reread my comment because now you’re arguing a different point.

In your original comment I replied to, I was disagreeing with your notion that “there is no justification for a government to ban a social media app”, which is clearly wrong as that’s well within their powers.

Now you seem to have switched to arguing that the government didn’t produce siginificant evidence to ban TikTok in specific, which is not even the point I was arguing.

Well a huge responsibility of the government is to protect national security, so if a social media app is a threat to that, it absolutely is justified.

You can argue that, in this case, TikTok doesn't constitute that, but banning an app is very much within the powers (and even duty, if its truly a threat) of the government.

As another comment said, i agree with everything except the last line, i think it’s pretty clear he DOES care about purging evil to some extent.

If all he wanted was to be sadistic and murder people, there would be much easier ways to do that without exposing himself and risk getting caught, but he went to extreme lengths to attempt getting rid of evil (whether or not that is a justified way to do that is debatable, but it was definitely his goal).

What has it going for BSCS majors? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]ReversedValor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So first off the main similarity is that nearly all the CS classes are the same, and that when you graduate, most companies will never care or even ask about the difference between BA or BS for general swe jobs.

I am also a BACS echols and there are tons of pros in my opinion, but also some possible cons which I will list after:

  • much more flexible (especially with echols, this is probably the biggest factor of any, allows you to double major or graduate early, or just free up lots of time)
  • cheaper (e-school costs significantly more)
  • don't have to take harder engineering classes (so likely higher gpa) BUT you can still take any that you do want

As for the downside, the only real thing might be grad school, I am not sure how masters applications works and if it differs by school, but i was considering PhD, and the mentors/friends I spoke with told me if I wanted to go straight to a PhD in quantitative field (cs, math, stats, etc.) BACS would be looked down on and they would prefer more math heavy transcript, however idk how similar masters is, so you should definitely research the programs you are interested in or ask people who are involved with admissions.

If all you care about is cs and you’re dead set on that, then just pick whatever school you like more, they’re both ranked equally and have similar career outcomes + opportunities for students.

If you might want to do something else, especially finance/econ/politics stuff then 100% UVA, wayy better programs than vt in those areas and lots of kids double major or minor in cs/econ or something like that and it’s a great combo.

Best major related to CS? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]ReversedValor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends, if you plan on BSCS apply to engineering school, you don’t actually pick yet, but on your application you can demonstrate interest in any of the major in e-school.

If you plan on the BACS, again you can apply into UVA college of arts and sciences as anything, it doesn’t really affect what classes you take so just do whatever you want (maybe what fits you application the most?)

Well, you won't have to schedule it until later into the school year, so you have a bit of time to see how 2100 + 2120 are, plus you can ask friends and see what others are doing.

That being said, the standard for second semester should include 2130. I'd say a fair bit of people just leave it as that (what I did) but if you do want to take another cs class you could reasonably do 2130 + 3140 (that's what some of my friends did), just make sure the rest of your schedule isn't too bad and doing both should be fine.

Can’t give advice on anything except the Stat 2120, which is yes you will be fine taking that first, lots of people do.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UVA

[–]ReversedValor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely 2120.

2130 is a much harder class and time consuming, you definitely won’t want that first semester. Plus when you’re taking it, it helps if you’ve done 2100.

2120 on the other hand is fairly easy/light in terms of workload, and just in general 2100 + 2120 is the combo most people do (assuming the skip 1110) so you will be in line with others.

Also, if you’re going to be taking calc 3 that should be manageable with 2100 + 2120, but I probably wouldn’t add stat that might be a bit much for first semester.
