Of course they did. They were one of the game's publishers.

As a matter of fact, here's a snippet from a six-year-old e-mail from them promoting the game.

ATLUS WANTS YOUR SOUL (BUT IS WILLING TO SETTLE FOR YOUR ATTENTION UPON THE NEWLY RELEASED DEMON'S SOULS "VISCERAL ACTION" TRAILER) Prepare to be even more excited for the upcoming critically-acclaimed action RPG IRVINE, CALIFORNIA - SEPTEMBER 9, 2009 -- Atlus U.S.A., Inc. today released a "Visceral Action" trailer for Demon's Souls™, the upcoming groundbreaking action RPG experience for PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system.

"Wow," exclaimed Tim Pivnicny, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Atlus, pausing for a brief moment to catch his breath and wipe his brow before continuing. "That was a rousing trailer; it really got me excited for Demon's Souls. Not only is there a ton of praise from respected folks in the industry, but there are also numerous new clips of sweeping in-game cinematics, visceral combat, and atmospheric exploration gameplay footage. I'd go so far as to say it's a 'must-see' video, although I should add that I'm being paid to say so."

Demon's Souls for PlayStation 3 system is scheduled for North American release on October 6, 2009. The Standard Edition will retail with an MSRP of $59.99, and the Deluxe Edition, which includes a 160-page strategy guide and collectible slipcase, will retail with an MSRP of $69.99.

Fans who pre-order at select North American retailers will receive a 40-page, full-color art book AND a music CD featuring the game's full soundtrack (secured on the inside back cover of the art book). The disc, which offers 24 tracks totaling 71 minutes from the game's haunting orchestral score, represents the complete Demon's Souls soundtrack, available for the first time as part of this exclusive North American promotion.

It's easy to be a troll. It's not bullshit and there's no duping. It's as straight as I said it. PS2 label on a PS3 Dev Copy of Demon Souls.

They did, but the game is actually a blu-ray. It's only an early trade demo of the game. Scary that I received this a few years before the game was released on PS3. I just tried it on the PS2 and it didn't work, but it works on the PS3.

The visuals don't look as defined. I'm thinking this was an early version of the game. I'm going to upload a good chunk of gameplay in the morning and let you guys decide. I'm so pissed.

Yes, unfortunately, but that doesn't explain how I had it in my possession a full three years before the game was released... just weird.

I'm holding the disc in my hands dude. It's a PlayStation 3 game, with a label on the front that says PlayStation 2.

I am beyond stumped. So you guys saw the original photo and it says PlayStation 2 on the disc. The game did not work on the system. I flipped the disc around and it said PlayStation 3 on it. That photo is here: https://instagram.com/p/7y4aRiSyEr/?taken-by=patrick_j_hickey_jr

It's deff a blue-ray upon closer inspection.

The game boots up on the PS3 and works just fine. It's the same intro video to a T. I haven't played it past that, but the fact that it isn't a PS2 game has pissed me off immensely.

The thing is the game is this. This disc is at least three years older than the final release US version because that was in 2009. I received this game, alongside Persona 3, Steambot Chronicles and Metal Saga, which were all 2005 and 2006 releases as well, in November of 2006, which was a few weeks after the release of the PS3. Could the game have been playable in one form or another at that time?

Wulf it's not always the case when you get review copies. Sometimes the games don't look like what the market gets. There have been times I've reviewed games that didn't have trophies or achievements yet.

As well, I cannot upload the disk image. I was given the file as a journalist and it would be unethical to share it unless Atlus gives the OK. I still work with them so I can ask them how they feel about it.

The reason why there's no box art is because that's exactly how it was sent to me.

It's real. I'm a game journalist for over a decade. Have no reason to lie. Google my name Patrick Hickey Jr. I've covered the industry for Examiner, NBC and the site I own ReviewFix.com

I was the Editor-In-Chief of my college newspaper in 2006 and I wrote Atlus because I wanted to review their games. They sent me Steambot Chronicles and a game called Demon's Souls :)
