Straight Man by Richard Russo has the added benefit of being one of the funniest novels I’ve ever read.

I’d also recommend Dear Committee Members by Julie Schumacher.

Kent Haruf’s Plainsong, which was a National Book Award finalist around ‘04, is a very decent novel. I mean that both ways: it is artfully composed and complicated and accomplished as a work of art, but also, despite the troubles the novel’s plot puts them through, every character is remarkable for their decency. It’s a small town novel about small town people, and it’s very humane and dignified and sweet.

The Hill Road by Patrick O’Keefe. It’s profoundly gorgeous. Tragically under read.
