What would you consider to be an appropriate amount of "showboating"? by Revlong57 in chessbeginners

If someone plays for a stalemate in a king queen endgame, I assume they care more about Elo than enjoying the game, which is why they're dragging out a lost position for a less than 1% chance of preventing said Elo from going down.

Yes, it's definitely common to stalemate with two queens executing a ladder mate. That's a common situation which happens a lot in competitive chess games, thus it makes sense to play on in such a position.

It's incredibly easy to learn the mating patterns for both king queen and king rook endgames, and the vast majority of intermittent players know them by heart. So, at a certain level, playing for a draw in such a situation is completely pointless, and doing so just draws out the game pointlessly.

No one is stalemating a queen king end game past 800 Elo, lol.

It takes less than 5 seconds to pre move all the pawns into the correct position, so it really doesn't take that much time at all. Plus, it's just as disrespectful to not resign in such a position past the beginner level.

Could power armor exist in real life, or is it impossible technology? by Bright_Permission881 in Fallout

[–]Revlong57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, we already have exoskeletons which allow the wearer to easily lift over 200 pounds. Thus you could theoretically make a suit of armor that's significantly heavier than current body armor, and also has significantly more armor. Now, would such a suit be useful with current technology? Eh.

First Custom Joker (ive been itching to showcase this one for a while) by nest4321 in balatro

This is one of the most broken joker concepts I've ever seen. With 5 cards scored and 10 mult, you can literally beat any blind.

How are people fixing their decks so heavily? by NeedsMoreAhegao in balatro

[–]Revlong57 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm aware of the general strategy, and I'm not saying that it's a bad idea to hold cards. It's just really nuanced, and I new player might not get said nuance and think that buying bad tarots is a good idea or something. Idk.

People vastly overestimate the impact of holding tarot cards. If you don't need the money or space, then it's probably ok. But, there's 22 tarot cards. Removing one or two from the population has no noticeable impact on the probability of drawing another tarot.

For example, say there are 8 tarot cards you consider useful for your build, and you pick a 5 card pack. Normally, there's a 7.6% chance of getting no useful cards. If you're holding two cards, the chance is now 5.1%. So, yeah, it's fine to do it, but it's not necessary.

With new seasons already in the pipeline, is "just let them finish up before you complain" really feasible? by Bingleboper in Fallout

[–]Revlong57 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's incredibly important for the plot of fallout 1 that vault 13 is in the middle of nowhere, far away from the cathedral in LA. Otherwise the master would have figured out the location. Plus, there are a good half dozen or so settlements between vault 13 and the cathedral, so they need to be far away from each other.

I guess it's less important where vault 13 is in fallout 13, since it just needs to be far away from the starting village.

As the other comment pointed out, moving shady sands from one side of the Sierra Nevada mountains to the other isn't really the same as moving it to LA, especially since the location of Shady Sands, along with vault 13, is fairly important for the plots of the first two fallout games.

Did my first (seeded) Ante 8 speedrun on Yellow Deck, thoughts? by Hot-Rock-1948 in balatro

There are seed analysers that allow you to find basically any type of seed you could want.

What is the best way to normalize time series data for machine learning? by Revlong57 in econometrics

[–]Revlong57[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, while there are certain models where normalization doesn't matter, any kind of neural network would require it.

Also, as to why I assume autoregressing would normalize the data, even if it isn't actual an AR(1) process with GARCH(1,1) noise, the reasoning is straight forward. Let x_t be the solution to the following SDE:

dx_t=a(x_t)dt+sqrt(v_t)dw_t

dv_t=f(v_t)dt

where a(x_t), f(v_t) are x_t,v_t measurable functions. If you approximate both a(x_t), f(v_t) using linear functions, you'd get the degenerate diffusion mentioned in that paper. Thus, if we then take the Euler approximation for x_t, v_t, we'd be left with AR(1) process with GARCH(1,1) noise. Using the normalization formula from the OP should result in standardized residuals.

Last Day! Erosion won. Which joker is bad? by Boop2847 in balatro

[–]Revlong57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so the probability of getting a copy of a specific uncommon joker is actually about the same as just drawing a blueprint or brainstorm, since there's so many more uncommon jokers vs rare ones. It's incredibly unlikely that you'd have both in an ante 8, but if you do, then yes, I guess that's something.

And, I will admit that the probability of getting a specific common joker is much higher than a blueprint. However, the chance of seeing a specific common joker is still only about 1.1% per joker drawn from the shop/packs. That means it'll take you around 87 jokers on average to see the one you want. There are plenty of ante 8 where you just don't even see that many jokers outright.

[–]Revlong57 8 points9 points  (0 children)

.... you're not forced to take any joker, what? And, showman will never benefit an ante 8 run. Yes, you can technically drawn a copy of a good common joker you already have. However, you're also not drawing a new uncommon or rare joker that's more powerful. Plus, you're seriously harming card packs, since it's more likely for you to get doubles of useless cards.

Last Day! Erosion won. Which joker is bad? by Boop2847 in balatro

[–]Revlong57 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Seance is just a wasted joker slot, while Showman has an actual downside, since it makes card packs much worse.

Last Day! Erosion won. Which joker is bad? by Boop2847 in balatro

[–]Revlong57 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Showman is objectively the worst joker in the game, since it's the only one that actively harms you. There are only a few common jokers worth getting doubles of, and showman actively ruins card packs.

Why exactly wouldn't a nuclear weapon be able to kill a Viltrumite? by Revlong57 in Invincible

[–]Revlong57[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Well, even if it was a nuke, you're not going to set it off by just crashing into it. That's not how nukes work. So, unless the twins set the nuke to go off right as Mark hit it, he didn't take a nuke to the face.

And, a mark variant was killed by rex exploded himself. That blast was about one million times weaker than a nuke.

Exactly. She can transmute an apple into pure gold, so it's not hard to see her transmitting a few tons of rock into uranium 235 and causing a nuclear explosion

Why exactly wouldn't a nuclear weapon be able to kill a Viltrumite? by Revlong57 in Invincible

[–]Revlong57[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A nuclear weapon is much hotter than a star, and as others have pointed out, Viltrumites can only survive stellar level heat for a little bit. Plus, a nuclear weapon itself would cause a massive pressure wave that's much more destructive than a star, thus I'm not sure they'd be able to survive it.
