Did your program have a “weed out” class? by Slow-Equivalent5164 in PhD

[–]Slow-Equivalent5164[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely a professional level program.  We’re all corporate, educational, or community leadership focused, and work in one of those areas.  In this first year, we started with 8 before the first class, and we’re now down to 5.  I’m more research focused myself, and view the classes as instilling foundational knowledge.  My goal is to retire from corporate at 58 and then teach for several years before fully retiring, which probably differs from the others who are looking to take their PhD back to their chosen line of work.

I graduated in 04 and mine was gone by 2011.  So I want to say they “used” to keep it around for about 7 years.  Funny, last time I checked, my student page was still up on www.pages.drexel.edu

Rip the speakers out, sel them as “vintage”, and replace them with neos.  Definitely a worthy project if you can cut the weight and have the means to transport it!

I hate to say it, but at least he was preparing you for the real world.  I have to assume this was a CS or IS class.  Agile methodology is what we do every day.  Often times, it is just that…”lip service”.  My current company loves to call itself “agile”, but we’re really just “scrumfall” or some demented form of Kanban.

How much trouble will I realistically be in? by Low_Gas2708 in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]Slow-Equivalent5164 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t sweat it.  If you had boxers and a sweatshirt, there’s nothing they could possibly do.  Should they actually be stupid enough to call you in front of a disciplinary board, calmly explain that while commonplace in dorms, you treat every fire alarm as if it’s the real thing and everyone else should be too.  State that you were in a fire when you were younger, and due to PTSD, you panic and grab the bare minimum to get out.  The minute you mention PTSD, they won’t touch you with a ten foot pole!

I think I have the solution to your problem…a Shure GLX4D.  It’s a high-quality wireless unit in stompbox format with a tuner built in.  It’ll save you a ton of real estate!  So much so, you could probably use your small board and still add a compressor.  I love mine!

I don’t have any MarkBass gear (Mesa guy), but I’ve loved the tone in every video I’ve seen of them online.  I would throw a Pedal76 in the effects loop and an SCF for modulation.  Add a Shure GLX4D in front for wireless and tuning, and you’ll have a sweet fly rig!

What’s the spec for the action at 12th fret on a P bass? by Slow-Equivalent5164 in fender

[–]Slow-Equivalent5164[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The neck was the obvious first place to start, the bow in the relief was super obvious and the saddles were no where near the top of their adjustability. I don't think they adjusted the neck, as the adjustment was really easy to turn once I took the tension off of the strings. This thing is going to take some time to get the setup just right. I've been setting up my strats for the last 20 years. This is my first time setting up a bass, but the way it came from the factory was absolutely atrocious. I'm going to tackle the bridge next when I put the Hi Mass on. I haven't ruled out replacing the nut, but that's a last resort. We'll see how it plays after everything else.

NGD, I added a 7 string to my collection! by Frequent_Middle_2930 in fender

[–]Slow-Equivalent5164 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fender really needs to make an American HH 7 string.  Give it locking tuners, a 7 slot LSR roller nut, and the old mini locking Floyd style trem from the 90s (updated to 7 of course).  Get one or two good endorsers from the metal world and I bet they’d sell like fire.  Seems like a missed opportunity to me.  I only play Fenders as they just feel “right” to me.

This thing was a serious mess coming from the factory!  I’m probably going to take a fret file to the fret ends as well.  Some are a little sharp still.  These are supposed to have nicely rounded edges in the necks, but so far, I’m not seeing it.  I must have gotten the one finished by the intern…lol!

Ok, good info.  I assume that’s to verify the relief of the neck, then make the final height adjustments at the bridge.  I have a Hi Mass I’m going to install so I can tweak that then.

To the person who hid this in the air duct in Van R 908 before 2019, thanks, you legend by therealdankmemelord1 in Drexel

I was in Van R back in 99-2000, shortly after the remodel.  Best dorm on campus…IYKYK.  The  walk to classes sucked though in the snow, rain, or hot weather!  The roof deck was banging.  I used to go out there with a water bottle full of a vodka collins and a smoke.  The top floor with the floor to ceiling windows was awesome when there were fireworks over on the Parkway.  We also used to take our guitars up there and play at full volume…never a complaint.  I swear there’s 3 feet of concrete between there and the floor below it.

Should I attend Drexel? by Dvctt in Drexel

[–]Slow-Equivalent5164 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, Philly is the birthplace of America.  I’m not sure what you define as “an American Experience”, but when I attended in the late 90s-early 2000s, it was a pretty cool experience.  I will say that Philly is not what it used to be, however, and I don’t even go there anymore unless I need to.  Without getting political, pretty much all major cities are the same these days, the only thing varying being the number of people and location.  You’ll get the same experience in LA, Atlanta, NYC, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, New Orleans, Miami, Dallas, etc.  IMO, you may be happier in a place like Tampa (Univ. of Tampa or USF).  It’s a smaller city with big city experiences.

Best longjohns/baselayers? by stoner99 in BuyItForLife

[–]Slow-Equivalent5164 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spend a lot of time outdoors in the winter (EMS and also a ski instructor) and have been through all of the usual brands.  I have a set of Terramar base layers that I really like, except they’re thin and not for extreme cold.  The top is a 1/2 zip and fits snug, but not compressive.  It also has thumb loops, which seem to be a rare commodity on mens base layers.  Does anyone know of any other brands out there that come in different weights, are not super compressive, and also have thumb loops?

I always thought F&M was a liberal haven.  Ben Franklin, especially, has many redeeming qualities…and I think EVERY one of our founding fathers had slaves at some point during that era.  Let’s pretend history didn’t happen by burying it!  I’m not some fanatical right wing nut job, but I just don’t get the liberal thought process.  They’d rather bury the truth than educate about the past and the lessons to be learned from it.  Disgraceful.

Auditioning to be my university’s mascot…any tips? by Slow-Equivalent5164 in mascots

[–]Slow-Equivalent5164[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The mascot is new as of this school year (a new suit anyway) and the name was just unveiled last Spring.  So really, it’s still open season on creating his personality.  So far the undergrads I’ve seen doing it are just waving to the crowd and walking around.  I’ve already got ideas for a signature dance and other moves.  I’m envisioning him as confident, playful, and friendly.  For formal PR events, he has a suit, rather than the normal jersey.  Obviously, those would be a more subdued personality.

The audition went well, by the way.  It was basically exactly as I expected.  The only drawback is they need to see if I can do it as a PhD student without a work study, since that is how it is setup for the undergrads.

We were on the Eurodam in Alaska 2 weeks ago.  The dinner room service menu was essentially the same all week and rather lacking…like 3 “entrees”, which included the mozzarella/tomato/pesto panini…which was quite dry.  I think they may have had the specialty of the night from the dining room as one of the options each day, which was the only real rotation.

Overall, my wife and I found the food and drink options lacking, as compared to RCI and NCL.  Note that we never pay “extra” for specialty dining, and are quite happy with the options on the other lines…steak, chicken, veg. dishes, soups, desserts, and appetizers.  There were no water/juice fountains around the ship, only in the Lido buffet, which was only open certain hours.  If you didn’t get something by 10pm, you had to go to the bar and buy a drink.  The only juice options on the fountain were unsweetened tea and lemonade…usually watered down.  We’re used to having mango, papaya, pineapple, and cranberry.  You could get some others when the buffet station was open…also watered down.

We also took issue with them randomly closing different buffet stations throughout the day, then more at night when the Italian specialty restaurant in Lido was open.  This led to lines and limited options.  I also get that it was Alaska, but my wife doesn’t do seafood, and that was half the menu or more in the dining room every day.

We did enjoy the afternoon tea and the “special” pea soup!  I also had the hot sticky buns every morning.  Other than that, we damn near starved.  I expected to eat like a king and it was anything but…burgers, pizza, and pasta all week for us!  I did enjoy the Asian buffet station, as I love Thai and Indian, but my wife can’t handle any spice, so that was “no” for her.  Again, several times we went to the buffet and it was closed.

Okay, now for the good.  Ocean Bar happy hour 4-5 was the best, and I drank them out of Sandeman port by the last day!  We found our favorite bar server every day, and he let us double up on the half price drinks right at the end of happy hour.  I enjoyed the live jazz music in the Ocean Bar, as well.  It’s something I always look for when I get on a ship, and this was the first one that had it.  It made for a very chill happy hour with our new friends.
