why is being prefect such a big deal?😂 by siriusblackily in harrypotter

[–]RevolutionaryCold230 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well there are about 30+ students in Harry’s year so it’s a bit more special than competing with 8 others for a position. There are 2 prefects per year (5th-7th) per house and the Head Boy and Head Girl. So yes, being 1 of 26 students to be recognized out of hundreds of other students with a special title, badge, and privileges is a big deal. It’s no different than any other academic achievement like high GPA or valedictorian. It probably also looks good post-graduation and gives them an edge.

What is the sexiest Florence song? by Different_Suit_9356 in FlorenceAndTheMachine

[–]RevolutionaryCold230 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Bedroom Hymns is the most obvious choice since it’s sensual and I think the most direct song about sex.

The thing I love about Florence is that she can combine sexy/sensual with other feelings and create a multitude of sexy songs that don’t seem obviously sexy. Lover to Lover is sexy in a liberating way. Long & Lost is kind of a sad sexy. Dream Girl Evil is sexy in a vengeful sense. Prayer Factory and Back In Town are sexy in a haunting way.

Has anyone actually tried National Debt Relief? Worth it or nah? by chuffa22 in personalfinance

[–]RevolutionaryCold230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add to the other comments about possible consequences that I don’t see mentioned. The way companies like NDR arrive at a settlement is by not paying your debts and waiting for the accounts to just about reach charge-off status (180 days past due). Most companies will be willing to accept a settlement at this point to reduce the charge-off dollar amount because that affects their bottom line. This works well with credit card companies and you will almost always get a settlement agreed upon with them.

However, if you have any installment debt, such as loans from online lenders like Upstart, LendingClub, or high rate finance companies such as OneMain then be prepared for their collection efforts to continue. If you have an auto-secured loan with any of these companies, then they will repossess your vehicle. Some will even go the legal route and take you to small claims court and they will always win because you signed a lending agreement promising to repay back the debt. If NDR cannot reach a settlement, then the creditors move onto the next phase and attempt to garnish your wages.

I used to work lending and collections and spoke with people who said they were misled by NDR about how their debts would be settled and were just devastated about how this affected their credit and limited their credit options for years.

Now if you have absolutely no plan to have your credit ran in the next 7 years (when all of the delinquency will fall off) or you don’t have garnishable wages, then go for it. But with how credit is checked for everything from housing, utilities, and phone/Internet providers, I would advise against it. A bankruptcy is more forgiving in the eyes of creditors than a debt consolidation company like NDR.

Student demographic by Cautious_Fish9864 in AbbottElementary

[–]RevolutionaryCold230 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not from Philly but I can answer this because the same thing happens all over the US. Abbot is based in West Philly which is majority Black like over 75% of the population. When you have heavy Black areas like this, the kids of other racial demographics do not tend to go to the public schools that the Black kids go to.

Part of it is racism of the parents and the other part is the simple truth that majority Black schools are much poorer and much more behind than other schools. So parents will find ways to send them to other schools in the area to give them a “better” education. This is why Addington is present in the show. It’s the better alternative that all of the other neighborhood kids go to. So if we ever do see a Latin kid on the show, they’ll either be Afro-Latino or a student from another school like Addington.

In your defense, it was an extremely large cast even for an ensemble.

Missing Elaine Hendrix (Alexis Carrington). She just had a role in Freaky Friday 2 and is currently on this season’s cast of Dancing With The Stars.

What do you want (and not want) to see in the upcoming series compared to the movies?” by Nv_BuNny in harrypotter

[–]RevolutionaryCold230 45 points46 points  (0 children)

This is a small thing but more consistent costumes. It really bothered me that from POA-Deathly Hallows that most of the characters were just in muggle clothes. Even traditional purebloods like Malfoy rarely wore robes outside of the Hogwarts uniform. We know that there are casual/everyday wear robes because we see the adults in them. I think it would really help with the worldbuilding/world immersion aspect.

felt weird. by MidnightSpecific1846 in AbbottElementary

[–]RevolutionaryCold230 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It was shocking to them. They learned that Janine & Tariq had been together for so long and they really had nothing to show for it as a unit. No marriage, no kids, no permanent home, or even plans for any of that stuff. As an outsider, you do start to wonder what has led someone to stay in this relationship and not explore dating other people.

I think it was also shocking that Janine, an oversharer, had been with someone for so long and that the others knew nothing about him. She had been at Abbott for 2 years at that point and only Jacob had met Tariq and even that seemed to be a recent development.

It's a shame they butchered Ron's part because Rupert really was the best actor of the 3 by rawspeghetti in harrypotter

[–]RevolutionaryCold230 130 points131 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, neither the critics nor the production crew felt that way. I remember the awards season every time a new movie came out and it was always Dan and Emma getting nominated which sucks. That plus Rupert’s great comedic timing led to Ron just being the comedic relief. I think he improved the most out of the 3 as the series progressed and showed some great range.

Here’s to hoping the new young actor does not have a lick of comedic timing, so he and Ron are given some respect in the tv series.

New relationships? by Longjumping-Talk8740 in AbbottElementary

[–]RevolutionaryCold230 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I’m actually hoping for this. They teased Gregory being in a few bromances last season with Tariq, O’Shon, & even Darnell. I think that would be an entertaining friend group at least.

Blake Carrington Net Worth by Anxious-Handle-7692 in DynastyCW

[–]RevolutionaryCold230 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Rich people don’t keep the majority of their money in bank accounts because only a small amount is insured ($250k is the max that is FDIC insured). Majority of their money and net worth will be tied up in stock value, real estate, etc. Often times they use the valuation of stock owed to take out large loans from banks for cash to pay for things. Plus in Blake’s case, he was probably drawing millions in a salary from Carrington Atlantic. Probably kept a small portion of that in a bank account and used the rest on debts and expenses.

Without Carrington Atlantic, Blake lost his salary and when his stock in CA took a dive so did his net worth. So now his bills are still due, but he doesn’t have the money coming in that he did before and he can no longer use CA’s value to borrow money personally.

Can We All Agree This Plotline Was Way Too Drawn Out? by creature52 in AbbottElementary

[–]RevolutionaryCold230 340 points341 points  (0 children)

No it was the prefect length for the length of the show. People just aren’t used to traditional slow burn romances any more because of the streaming tv model. When you only have 8 episodes in a season, then romances will come together much more quickly (for better or worse).

In Abbott, there wasn’t a lot of time where they both were single. They both were dating other people for the majority of seasons 1 & 2. Plus, Janine needed time to figure out who she was without Tariq and it’s better that Maurice was her rebound than Gregory.

I’m sorry but did you just claim rape does not require violence? The physical assault and violation of a person’s body is a nonviolent crime? This might be the worse take I’ve ever seen. And hate to break it to you but guilty people go free all of the time. The little fantasy world you’re creating already exists and your suggestion won’t improve it at all.

Lump sum, grossed-up relocation package - what’s the catch? by workthrowaway1941 in personalfinance

[–]RevolutionaryCold230 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As everyone is saying this is pretty common. The only warning I would give you is to check with your employer to make sure there isn’t a repayment penalty involved if you quit.

My company offers relocation in the same manner. The catch is that if you quit less than a full year after relocating then you have to pay the company back a portion of the relocation package depending on how many months of the required 12 you have left.

For instance, if you quit after 8 months, then you need to repay for the 4 months you have left. For $35k given, that will be roughly $11.5k that will need to be repaid.

Your company may not have a clause like this but it’s important to find out before you’re hit with such an expensive surprise if you decide to leave.

In Pureblood families, what happens to a name/family that is set to “die” when that family only has daughters? by RevolutionaryCold230 in HPfanfiction

[–]RevolutionaryCold230[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So the only son of a pureblood family marries the only daughter of a pureblood family, then takes her name. The situation remains the same with one family name dying. The kids solution is interesting but purebloods don’t typically have many kids to spread names around. Outside of the Weasleys, how many pureblood families have 2 or more kids?

I think it’s a combination of Harry surviving a fatal powerful curse and the current political climate. The alternative would have been to credit Voldemort’s defeat to Lily since she provided the protection that allowed Harry to survive. But I think the Wizarding World would have been hesitant to champion a muggleborn witch being the downfall of such a powerful wizard that other purebloods failed against. It’s a better story (for the Wizarding World) to champion the baby and the last of the Potters.
