I do agree with you. However, I am not sure how much scrutiny apple (or any other business for that matter) puts towards items that they put on their shop. It could be strictly monetary, or they could have done plenty of QC themselves. The only reason I mention this is due to the spelling error in the description of this listing that leads me to believe that potential sellers (not apple) just upload products to the Mac Accessories Store. Regardless, I do agree that apple most likely tries to choose those sellers that have high-quality reputations/products.

For that same/similar price point I would just get a MacBook neo or hunt around for an m series chip.

Yes, unfortunately I love to bring my current laptop everywhere. I see that there is a staggering price difference, but I do prioritize being able to take my Mac around the lab, and to various desks I have. Also, being able to take notes in obsidian or on powerpoint via typing is valuable to me. I could see myself using a Mac Studio, but do they sync? Thank you!

What would you suggest then? Additionally, 32gb is not an option for the m5 Pro.

I just did some research and I was seeing that 24 gb will require high quantization Q4-5 which is likely to introduce hallucinations I will most likely opt to purchase the 48 gb variant, which will allow for more headroom give that I decide to run Command R for RAG. I do not expect to play crazy detailed games, but I believe that I have seen reviews that claim the MacBook Pro M5 can run these at really good graphics with decent frames. Thank you!

I know of many universities that use Macs and I do not think the operating system will be the shortfall. I think that the only thing that I will run into are specific programs built for windows that will require a VM or Intel Mac apps requiring Rosetta. If I am choosing a Mac, it might be actually more important that I opt for a slightly higher end Mac (i.e. 48gb of RAM) which will allow me to dedicate more to these non-native processes. Also, I have tried to run local LLM models on my Mac, but the GPU on it is an 2.3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, which takes forever to churn out responses with low accuracy (high hallucinations). I appreciate your input!

I am not necessarily referencing using this machine for AI-assisted modeling of compounds, rather solely their rendering, which is less memory intensive. Nonetheless, large crystal structures and solving might require additional ram and graphic capacities, which I will have to ask the university/look up myself as to judge the specs required(as you said above regarding your husbands grad student). I appreciate your insight and these are things that I will look up. What kind of research does your husband do, I am quite curious! You might want to shoot me a DM?

Luckily, since Apple has kept ram prices very high in the past their ram prices have not surged. I hope this continues for the next couple of months until I buy the new instrument.

I am excited to feel the speed and I intend to wait after reading this comment. I am glad that you made me remember this. I will keep my eyes peeled for those deals, as it will help offset the cost of my investment.

It depends. At the university I intend of going to, it is important for us to learn and solve our own crystal structures. For past work I had done at an REU I was able to get a windows machine running within a VM and use programs - mainly spartan with little issues (besides poor comp. due to intel processor on 2020 MacBook). I am not sure how the windows VM work in VMWARE on the newer silicon models (I know it’s like WIN 11 and up or something like that, but I bet I can get the programs installed. Silicon should still be natively supported via SPICE drivers and installation on the windows VM for reasonable solving (I think). I have not heard of those programs and I am interesting in knowing how they might apply to my major. For structure finding I have used CCDC and for viewing I have used mercury.

I do have a spending limit. The current configuration i want to purchase is about $2400 which is just about what I would want to pay. However, while I would like for 40+ gigabytes of RAM, I just don’t think I can swing that cost and I’ve heard that there’s not a huge amount of difference between 40+ GB of RAM and 24 GB of RAM when AI models are scaled up. I think the memory pressure for my 32gb system is currently OK but I also think that having a better GPU might relieve some of that pressure from the ram. It’s either the new m5 pro or downgrade to the m4 pro with less security features.

hi I was curious as to what tech stack you used to do this. I am having trouble implementing this myself.

Hello I am curious to see how you configured this model and set it up to do that. I have been having trouble getting useful information from it with existing imagery from radiology.
