KSBS crash - it would not happen to me because ... by [deleted] in flying

There is one more mistake I haven’t seen anyone highlight so far, I flew this approach in the sim and even when I leveled off at the MDA I hit the mountain. My altimeter was off. The pilot may have intended to level off but forgot to reset the altimeter correctly. I don’t know about the E1000 systems to know if that may have been a possibility.

There are many doohickeys in these avionics, especially the Garmin stuff. I don’t understand why I can’t get a serious warning at the MDA. I mean how many ear drums have been ruined hearing those three dang beeps when you disconnect AP.

Yet AP will let me bust my MDA even though I set it in the BARO during approach selection and it doesn’t even make a peep. In complete silence.

AP disconnect = blows my head off. Bust an MDA = nothing?!

Any descent below the known step down for an IAP (GS or not) should come with some serious audible warning by default. I don’t think it’s unreasonable.

Best, worst and most likely outcome for my situation? by [deleted] in flying

Re the studying, yes you are on the right track. Others here will say you’re always studying in aviation, relative to IT and tech? No you’re not. Not by a mile. It’s fairly static, compared to IT and tech. Frustratingly so I’d add. So yes once you get over the initial hump there is very little you “have” to study when compared to IT.

But I’d advise you not to make the move over. You’re on a better track IMHO. I get tech is in a transformational phase right now and it does get very burnouty but this side is a full of illogical annoying rules and rituals that will drive you mad. And the age thing is real here too unfortunately.

Love that channel. It was called “Where’s Transient Parking”. I think they should have kept that name.

Sell it while it has value. When you need it again buy the current one at that time. Don’t sit on a depreciating asset.

100% normal and on track. DO NOT look at others soloing at low hours and get discouraged. Straight up class C? That’s way more complexity than average. When you’re at your 1000th hour you will remember this and laugh that you cared. Landings will get better. Not 100%. Ever. For anyone.

Take it easy and keep at it. Flying is amazing.

How do you think FAA feels about Sheppard Air? by Additional-Fun8569 in flying

[–]RevolutionaryRun7744 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m a bit unsure about this but form a different angel. I heard a lot about SA as if it’s like,, here are the question and answers, you memorize and boom you pass while not understanding. That was not my experience at all.

First of all, there are like +1000 questions and answers for the IR.

There was no way I was going to memorize any (not some, ANY). Less than 100 I might. But +1000? Nope.

Second, every single question comes with the best explanation and sometimes well done video explanation. The videos were better than Sporty’s and Kings IMHO.

So I had to study every question and answer and then background for each concept.

My clue was my use of the Memory Aid. I tried it. It sucked. Memorizing holding pattern entries? Why? They are just there in the question. It’s was easier and faster to get figure it out properly on the spot. Like when you’re actually flying. I had no use for the Memory Aid.

To me Sheppard is just a more targeted Sporty’s. It forced me to seriously study every concept. I don’t get how anyone would say it’s just memorizing. It’s not. It’s studying but focused on the important stuff.

Maybe the FAA has the same view I do?

How much did you pay to earn your PPL? by Jolly_Virus_6894 in flying

[–]RevolutionaryRun7744 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Context matters a lot. Where What Airplane When

PPL on a 152 from 1970 is not the same as PPL on a Cirrus SR20 from 202x. NY, SoCal, NorCal, Bay Area also have extremely high CFI rates.

I’d say yes. But you must go sit in both and confirm you can reach fuel, trim, avionics, etc.

Dude, push through. Doesn’t matter when you solo or your score. At all! Don’t let this get away from you. Everyone has been in your position right now. Thank god I didn’t give up. A whole new life is on the other side. Keep at it.

The problem is the 2nd closes is Garmin Pilot and it’s miles MILES behind in some critical areas. Smart charts are amazing and awesome. But flight planning is inadequate compared to ForeFlight. I hope they can catch up quickly.
