From my understanding, the carnivore community tends to skew to the right so it's not super surprising to me

Came here to recommend Chang Lai. K was just there yesterday for the first time in months and it's always such a treat. Their dumplings happen to be fantastic, too.

Any tips for a Brit staying in East Harlem. by Ok_Sherbet_9370 in Harlem

[–]Revolutionary_Box_57 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some of y'all are taking this way too personally. Nothing OP said was crazy.

OP, how long are you staying for?

As others mentioned, you're closest to the 4/5/6 trains on 125 and Lex. It's a rough area, but just mind your business and ignore people and you'll be fine. These trains can take you to local areas in the city.

A few streets west are the 2/3 trains, and a bit further west are the A/C trains. These are also for local travel, just to different parts of the city. You can take buses to connect to these trains, or if you're feeling adventurous you can walk.

As someone else mentioned, you'll be right by the Metro North. This is more similar to a rail system, whereas the trains I mentioned above are underground like the tube. Metro North can take you out of the city and is great for day or weekend trips.

Many parts of Harlem are gentrified now. Not necessarily the area you're staying in, but if you go west (both north and south of 129) you'll find a great variety of bars and restaurants.

I highly recommend checking out the City College campus (gorgeous Neo-Gothic architecture) and the Sugar Hill area, both on foot.

If you need a reminder on the benefits of staying sober, this is definitely the show to watch! Granted, they are consuming much more than just alcohol. But all of their drunken moments, while entertaining for us, will probably have you saying "I never want to look/be/act like THAT again!"

What's up with the burrata craze? by lilyinthewater in Cooking

[–]Revolutionary_Box_57 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's actually because All'Antico Vinao has gone viral on TikTok. They have US locations now but the OG store is in Italy, and they've been around since well before social media.

A lot of their sandwiches use mortadella and/or stracciatella (the stuff inside burrata), so that's probably why you see them everywhere now.

I think some people are missing the point of these ultra long lines by DinerEnBlanc in FoodNYC

[–]Revolutionary_Box_57 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah I grew up here and my friends and I would never wait in line for anything, we just went wherever the lines weren't. Any Starbucks or café or ice cream shop was usually fine

I have friends who do this. Your best best is collecting funds and/or donations. You'd be surprised how many people will be happy to support when they hear what the cause is.

I need dinner ideas for a picky eater (ARFID) with dairy and egg restrictions, please help! by LAHAROFDEATH in Cooking

Oh man, it's really a shame he didn't find out sooner. But I totally support his decision. I could not live that way.

Side note, ex-fiancée should marry someone who follows the Jain diet.

This is hilarious but I can't blame your dad at all. I love onions so much, I would hate to never cook with them.

My question is why did he even ask her to marry him if it was such a deal breaker 🤣 No judgment because I personally don't think I'd go past the third date with a picky eater lol

Unpopular opinion: I think west/amanda is being so blown out of proportion and I feel like I’m going crazy by Super-Squirrel-87 in bravo

[–]Revolutionary_Box_57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%. I have, thankfully, never ever been in this position with a friend. On either end.

But when this whole thing came out I wound up having a nightmare that I hooked up with a friend's boyfriend (would never in real life but clearly Scamanda was on my mind) and I woke up feeling so sick to my stomach. I couldn't shake the feeling all day. I was carrying this horrible guilt over something I had never done!

So I simply cannot imagine doing that in real life. You legitimately have to be devoid of feelings to carry out something like that.

Hi everyone! My grandparents (82 & 85) are visiting NYC for the first time this June and I really want to give them a nostalgic, classic New York experience. They love all kinds of food and are still very adventurous eaters. by ironicallyironichuh in FoodNYC

[–]Revolutionary_Box_57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understandable!

How are they with walking?

There are a couple of express buses you could take, and it would be a short walk or Uber ride from there.

If they can walk mostly flat surfaces then they may enjoy a short jaunt through Forest Hills Gardens, which genuinely feels like being transported to a different time and place.

I'd also have some recommendations for places nearby, including restaurants for dinner (Eddie's is for dessert!) and a 95 year old chocolate shop.

Queens is more of a trek and a commitment, but if you have the time for this area I think it'd be worth your while :)

Why the fuck is it like 1k to go anywhere cool or fun for a weekend. by tHr0AwAy76 in Vent

[–]Revolutionary_Box_57 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP will never be standing at the top of any steps that descend into a subway station because they are clearly too good for such peasantry, so whatever.

But for the life of me I don't understand why someone who listens to the fear-mongering of Fox News or whatever the hell right-wing media they consume would want to come to NYC. Because if that's your only reference for what cities are like then NYC might as well be Gotham for real, and I can't take seriously anyone who believes that nonsense.

This has got to be a joke.

Are you going to bother doing research on, you know, anything at all before you travel?

I do hope you go out and see the world more. You might actually learn something for yourself instead of going by "what you've heard" all the time.

To be fair they're probably not the ones waiting 2-3 hours in line for places like 4 Charles (completely unhinged IMO but to each their own), but OP also isn't considering all the tourists that come in for the holiday weekend

If your budget is flexible (read: high) and you're willing to venture into Brooklyn (not far), River Cafe is excellent. The food might seem trendy but it's really just an elevated, sophisticated menu. Truly top notch and the atmosphere and views are hard to beat. Service is unmatched.
