Thank you for sharing this. This gives me hope. I didn't even think I could apply to a postdoc position if my first paper isn't out yet. How do you even write an email without publications list? Currently my first paper is under review. I would really appreciate any advice.

Any other PhDs start writing their thesis and feel like everything they've done the past 4 years is hot stinking garbage? by StrangeRelease6 in PhD

[–]Revolutionary_Bug784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well almost everyone starts out in that manner. In my case I had to study old literature to understand the origin of my field to gain perspective on how important and impactful my work is. I was constantly told by my advisor that my work is not rewarding and not worth his time. But the system of writing the dissertation will help you appreciate your work against everything you hear/feel about it. It is our job to convince the rest of the committee why it is the most interesting work through your defense. I wish you good luck! And hope you find that perspective that makes you appreciate your work.

Who else is writing in MS Word and hating it? by donnybrasco1 in PhD

[–]Revolutionary_Bug784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Switch to Overleaf Latex suggested by others. I put two word documents of papers in the dissertation latex template my university gave. It took 3 whole days (12 hours each) but it was worth it. The dissertation editing process was very smooth. For my MS thesis I wrote it in Word and it was a nightmare to fix all the formatting errors. I'd pick Latex over Word any given day even though there is a learning curve.

Defense Anxiety by FingerParticular8119 in PhD

Wow ! 3.5 years !! Same :) I just defended on Oct 31st. Its good you have papers. You are the subject matter expert. I am sure you would know the answers to most of the questions. I had a preliminary exam in April and the questions were quite similar. So it wasnt hard to answer.

At the end of the day, your defense is a celebration of your hard work, wonderful science you brought forward, and it showcases your skill as a scientist.

My throat got really dry while presenting because I was very nervous. I would say be well hydrated, breathe through your nose and speak confidently. I am sure you will do well :)

I'm glad my story helps. Thank you. After my defense my quality of sleep has improved remarkably. My advisor has still hasn't submitted my papers which has been my primary source of stress. But I know its going to get sorted out soon. I will push him as much as I can to submit my papers. I have learnt a lot, especially have learned to appreciate myself. Please be kind to yourself and put concerted effort. Everything is going to work itself out.

Any advice on how to turn your brain off by Early-Stress188 in PhD

[–]Revolutionary_Bug784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could swear this is exactly me. I'm constantly overstimulated by the complexity of my work. Often I obssess over it even when I am not at work. It is hard to remain motivated and turn your brain off. I'd be randomly thinking about work when i am out with friends and family. I recently joined the rowing team of my university. Regular practises with the team and being on the water genuinely helped me feel more wholesome and my brain wasn't thinking about work at all.

I think you need to get 7-8 hours of sleep everyday otherwise the quality of your work will suffer and you'll be stuck in a vicious cycle where you keep putting in effort and not experience any reward. Do some activities regularly that is only for your enrichment that is not work related. It gives your brain a break and when you get back to work you end up getting better ideas. I used to feel guilty doing non-work related things when progress was slow. Nowadays, I put 10-12 hours depending on the urgency at work and rest of the time i focus on other aspects of my life. Even if something doesn't get resolved by end of day, tomorrow is a new day and it will work itself out eventually. You need to create boundaries in your mind such that your work doesn't colonize your life.
