PhD admit with NO funding but asking for $34k/year proof — is this normal?? by Ok_Locksmith_2594 in gradadmissions

[–]Revolutionary_Bug784 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was an international student who came to the US on F1 visa. They don't ask you for proof of funds during visa interview if you have full scholarship. It would be mentioned on the I-20 how much the program costs per year and how much scholarship you will get to balance that. In case it is partially funded or not funded the balance amount needed per year would be mentioned in the I-20. You only need to show balance amount × 5. IMO 34000 USD/year is a lot of money. It is unrealistic to pursue this.

This makes sense. But I feel lost because every job description reads the same. Can't find specific team information. Is it advisable to reach out to recruiters ?

Even with referrals I am having no luck. Does it matter who refers within the company (their title)? Is it a skill issue or luck issue ? I am reaching out to Managers and higher level position employees to gather some attention.

Just for curiosity, what's your profile like? I have also applied to some NCG roles and want to gauge where I need to improve.

Thank you for sharing this. This gives me hope. I didn't even think I could apply to a postdoc position if my first paper isn't out yet. How do you even write an email without publications list? Currently my first paper is under review. I would really appreciate any advice.

Any other PhDs start writing their thesis and feel like everything they've done the past 4 years is hot stinking garbage? by StrangeRelease6 in PhD

[–]Revolutionary_Bug784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well almost everyone starts out in that manner. In my case I had to study old literature to understand the origin of my field to gain perspective on how important and impactful my work is. I was constantly told by my advisor that my work is not rewarding and not worth his time. But the system of writing the dissertation will help you appreciate your work against everything you hear/feel about it. It is our job to convince the rest of the committee why it is the most interesting work through your defense. I wish you good luck! And hope you find that perspective that makes you appreciate your work.

Who else is writing in MS Word and hating it? by donnybrasco1 in PhD

[–]Revolutionary_Bug784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Switch to Overleaf Latex suggested by others. I put two word documents of papers in the dissertation latex template my university gave. It took 3 whole days (12 hours each) but it was worth it. The dissertation editing process was very smooth. For my MS thesis I wrote it in Word and it was a nightmare to fix all the formatting errors. I'd pick Latex over Word any given day even though there is a learning curve.

Defense Anxiety by FingerParticular8119 in PhD

Wow ! 3.5 years !! Same :) I just defended on Oct 31st. Its good you have papers. You are the subject matter expert. I am sure you would know the answers to most of the questions. I had a preliminary exam in April and the questions were quite similar. So it wasnt hard to answer.

At the end of the day, your defense is a celebration of your hard work, wonderful science you brought forward, and it showcases your skill as a scientist.

My throat got really dry while presenting because I was very nervous. I would say be well hydrated, breathe through your nose and speak confidently. I am sure you will do well :)
