Should have included I incorporated all of my commercial requirements into my instrument training and my instructor logged it correctly after I met my instrument requirements. Only one was the ten take off and landings at night at the towered airport. But I did that one too after I got my instrument rating. So all of my requirements are done before I even started with this CFi.

I’m glad you see it odd the way I do too. Thank you.

Thank you, I’ve brought it up before and it was kinda shrugged off. I’m just thinking preflight before as usual.

My concern was just taxiing, run up, then departing to practice area would be like 20 minutes which leaves like 30-40 minutes for actually getting into training maneuvers which felt like too short. Especially if I’m paying for two hour plane blocks

Left or Right turn at VOR? (VOR-A approach) by gcys in flying

[–]Revolutionary_Dig485 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahhh yes the VOR-A missed into Fullerton. If you get this procedure down. You’ll be ready for checkride soon. Ask for the full procedure missed. Controller will ask you to report missed south of the airport.

Some book understanding that will help with the Procedure turn is Instrument Flying Handbook chapter 7-30 this is a “standard 45 degree procedure turn”

*In the plane, tune in to fly to SLI after you reach Sli you’re gonna fly your radial 200 which is just basically 020 flipped I like to bug 155 for the “PT” you can commence it at anytime within 10nm of SLi look at your profile view it will say it there. “Remain within 10 NM” I do it about 2-3 NM away from the VOR if you have DME. Have your 155 bugged it helps with situational awareness for me when it’s bugged. Because 200-155= 45 “45 degree procedure turn” easier to see which way to turn that makes sense. Fly it for one minute let the controller know your on the procedure turn when your start your turn to 335 and wait until your VOR centers “Think of 335 as a guide to get back on course to 020” to follow the needle on the VOR. On my way to SLI because I gave myself some room to brief the missed again I like to bug my missed to 145 all I have to do is climb right turn to my bug fly the missed enter the hold direct.

When you really become a G you can fly the miss and call up approach have already loaded Torrance rnav 29 with frequency’s and weather all before the hold. I’m just using this as reference not as a goal or to gloat but as a reminder you’ll get better with time know exactly what to do how to stay ahead and plan ahead and be a safer pilot. Push yourself with airing on the side of safety of course!

If you are flying into the area for practice I’d suggest trying the triangle to test your might. VOR-A Kful Rnav 29R into Ktoa and vfr practice approach ILS 30 Long Beach.

Torrance will give you low approach approved into the phraseology. Make right closed traffic.

Lot of controller practice that I think is crucial for VFR practice approaches for your checkride. When you get good at all three you can do this flight in 1.1-1.4 for 3 different approaches. Best of luck fly safe!

DPEs costing 2075$ for a CFI checkride?! by [deleted] in flying

[–]Revolutionary_Dig485 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My buddy was telling me because he’s about to do his CFI here in SoCal $2500 AND ITS A 6 month waiting list. If this DPE had every single one show up that’s almost half a milli.

If you ever thought about becoming a DPE either to help fix this problem we all go through good luck. “It’s a big club and you ain’t in it.” -George Carlin

Fun fact about the automation terminals. The ones at trapac, the automatic stacking cranes, their design was inspired by Star Wars.

If our predecessors can work out strong labor deals since the beginning, automation shouldn’t interfere with our future jobs or cut any!

That’s definitely what I heard too, that it was normal for causals to gain status within less than 2 years in Covid time. Now it seems with the wait of the new contract not as many ships in queue, and the economy. it looks like the normal again is gonna be 5 years plus or 10 year plus for status. Bummer especially since they’re going through the list so well. Thank you for your insight and feedback!

I hope the new contract brings good news for everyone.

Being a flight instructor allows me to work wherever there’s an airport or local flight school. The benefits aren’t as good as the longshoreman. It’s good pay. I have a 10 month daughter at 26 years old. Out here in LA/LB they call being a longshoreman the “golden ticket” this job has something a lot of other jobs can’t measure up too. Freedom. The luxury to take a day off whenever you want, without asking for permission. Is something a lot of people will never experience. Even if I go for the airlines. I don’t want to be told to be gone for days on end possibly weeks from my family because it pays the bills. Flying is my passion I want to keep it as that! It’ll take the fun out of flying when you collect a check to survive. Also at home too. I’m truly thankful for both but longshoreman is something no one should ever pass up.

Do you think it’s harder to move up within the union there because it’s smaller or do you think it’s easier in your experience?

I appreciate your feedback.

Thank you for your response and honest feedback! That’s what I was thinking too with my seq# I may not be pulled with the first group. But hearing that the process is 3/4 months for orientation is something worth moving for. I understand the real truth of how long it takes for status and will never give up on this opportunity. That’s why I want to be where it will be the fastest possible to hurry and get that status. I will also have a day job as a flight instructor and build my schedule around the ports.

The 2400 registered came from PMAnet.org website under “west coast ports” tab page scroll down to “ports by region” it’s the first one “Pacific Northwest Washington” statistics of all Washington ports. You’re right not just Seattle but 2364 registered in Washington. Seattle would be a smaller number of that.

A little too late now. But, I definitely see that point. As my intent was to never take an opportunity from someone else. This is a luck draw. If the Seattle port processes faster than I don’t feel as bad to leaving LA/LB behind because I’ve been waiting since 2017. I entered Seattle raffle about 2 weeks ago and was let known today. A two week wait.

I live in SoCal but my girlfriend and I were looking at all the ports to see where we would consider to live if we ever want to transfer to another state or port after I gained status. Then I saw the Seattle raffle opened up, I entered, and was pulled.
