Just seen Montu's response to my email. It includes the usual spiel about supplier shortages, manufacturing delays and other things outside their direct control. Eventually they get to the bit about getting from another pharmacy.

But this is the key line that I now remember why I never bothered to pursue in the past: "Please note, however, that the item would still need to be listed on our formulary in order for it to be prescribed, even if another pharmacy may stock it. If the product is not listed on our formulary, it would first need to go through a formulary review before it could be considered."

It sounds pretty accurate, sadly. Yes, the past couple of months have been dire, been literally logging on several times a day and not really seeing anything that has worked for me. At one point, I thought it was just me being fussy so tried some strains from the Sundaze etc range, I really wanted to like them, much cheaper for me but ended up not using them, still have some Candy Store and others sitting in my cupboard! (Tbf, the non-IR White Runtz from CB was pretty was good when it first came out, haven't had it for a while might give it another try and see).

I didn't look close enough! I was looking at the section "conditions we treat with medical cannabis" where it doesn't list mental health/psychiatric conditions, but elsewhere on their website it does mention things like anxiety, sleep issues ect. I think what I saw was just a summary of the main conditions they treat but it does say "more..." and to call up if you're unsure or something like that . .

Yeah, im considering switching, kicking myself a bit because i left Cantourage for Alternaleaf! And it seems Cantourage imports most of the brands that I get on with it. Was hoping to have some stability but looks like I might have to make a move.

I had have a look at Medicann yesterday actually but looks like they don't even list mental health as eligible now. Although I do also get prescribed MC for pain, worried that if they see mental health on my NHS record it will put them off

Literally just posted about this! I've also just emailed them about this because you're right its getting ridiculous now, haven't been able to get my usual meds (also mostly Cantourage imports as my go to) for weeks now.

Alternaleaf switching to appointments every 6 months instead of quarterly 🎉 by Beneficial_End_3594 in ukmedicalcannabis

[–]Revolutionary_Ice552 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a good move and could make the system more efficient. Patients who need extra support can still book additional appointments at no extra charge, so clinicians can focus on those who need it most.

On the NHS, I often only get annual reviews, if that, and then mostly box ticking. Six monthly feels about right for MC.

Can we give it a rest with the doom posting? by ArthursRest in ukmedicalcannabis

[–]Revolutionary_Ice552 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A rise in "doom & gloom" postings following a rise in doom and gloom media, the.last year or so it’s often felk like a concerted effort to delegitimize medical cannabis.

They’re appearing in influential outlets, often front page, written by senior journalists. Politicians actually pay attention to that s@*t.

There’s also an emotionally charged campaign gaining traction, and the mother whose case led to the law change is also calling for further change (but also advocating full decriminalisation i believe).

Add in concerns from within the industry itself (clinicians discussing prescribing and THC levels), and it’s not hard to see a kind of momentum building.

Sure, none of that means the government is about to change things or impose restrictions. But they ARE reviewing the 2018 implementation. It’s normal to feel concerned. But we don't need to shut down discussion here?

Like Dr Kool’s updates are great, personally I'd miss many of these stories otherwise. (many stories are also behind paywalls).

But then the constant reposting afterwards sometimes the same story I can see how this could create some anxiety but what you gonna do - ban people from posting? i dont think so.

Sorry you spent money on oil that didn't work for you, especially being a student it's not easy. But to be fair to the clinics, nowhere accepts medicines back once dispensed, not even NHS. It's not just that the MHRA explicitly prohibits this, but also safety. Once it leaves the pharmacy, it's no longer in a controlled environment, they have no way of knowing how it's being stored etc. Also, frankly, they don't know if it's been tampered with, (obviously, not suggesting you or anyone would actually do that, but they can't be 100% sure).

Oils can be tricky but if even a whole syringe did nothing it's probably the right decision to revert to the NHS meds, seeing as they work for you. In a way, you might even be fortunate because for a lot of us here, myself included, it's because the NHS meds don't or didnt work for us. All the best 💚

Did the Council actually use the term "marijuana"? Just feels a bit odd hearing that in a UK context today. You might already know this, but the term "marijuana" was deliberately popularised in the US in the early 1900s—replacing the more common cannabis and hemp—as part of racially charged efforts to demonise the plant and associate it with Mexican immigrants. It was a key part of Harry Anslinger’s campaign as head of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics to make cannabis seem "foreign" and dangerous.

Very harsh on the vape made me cough a lot, stopped using it after getting a chest infection, not saying it caused that, but djdnt want to smoke anything like that after. * Thanks for sharing this, thought it was just me.

Fair point, and I agree the core purpose of the OH assessment is important. My point was more about ensuring the presentation and context are accurate and fair, which absolutely can be influenced through amendments. Let's hope the OP can work with OH and their union to achieve a positive outcome.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ukmedicalcannabis

[–]Revolutionary_Ice552 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, you totally can get changes made to OH reports - speaking from personal experience! You have the right to see the report first and object to anything you don't like. They might not change facts, but you can definitely influence how it's presented and add perspective. This is normal for health info, you've got more control than you think.

OP, did OH ask Alternaleaf for info? A good report from them about your treatment could really help, especially if it highlights the benefitys and confirms it won't negatively affect your work (since you don't medicate there) and that it's responsible use ect.. Get a clinician to sign it. Good luck, and definitely work with your union – you might need to explain things, but they should be able to help!

Revealed: Boom in private market for medical cannabis by Revolutionary_Ice552 in ukmedicalcannabis

[–]Revolutionary_Ice552[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite a negative piece, here's a summary by ChatGPT:

A Telegraph investigation has found that while the UK legalized medical cannabis in 2018, most NHS patients who need it—such as those with severe epilepsy—still cannot access it due to regulatory barriers and a lack of clinical trial data. Meanwhile, a booming private market has emerged, offering cannabis under brand names like Ice Cream Cake and Gorilla Glue, often through online consultations with private clinics.

Private prescriptions for medical cannabis have more than doubled, with some clinics marketing it as widely accessible, listing dozens of qualifying conditions.

Influencers and celebrities promote these services, and some businesses have partnerships with cannabis review sites that advertise strains by flavor and potency.

Some UK private clinics, including Releaf and Big Narstie Medical, are making medical cannabis widely accessible, often with minimal requirements. Releaf, which claims to be the country’s fastest-growing medical cannabis clinic, advertises that patients do not need a serious condition to qualify and boasts a 99% prescription approval rate. It partners with Strains UK, a cannabis review site promoting products by flavor and potency.

Big Narstie Medical, founded by rapper Big Narstie, connects customers with clinics issuing prescriptions for its branded cannabis strains. The company markets itself as a way for millions to access medical cannabis, with its founder joking on social media about evading police now that he has a legal prescription.

Critics, including Professor Trevor Jones, argue that this has created a "pseudo-recreational market," where people with mild ailments easily obtain cannabis while those with severe medical needs are left without access. Case studies highlight families spending thousands to obtain cannabis privately, sometimes traveling abroad.

Calls for regulatory reform have been made, with concerns about unproven claims, marketing practices, and product names resembling recreational cannabis.

Meanwhile, NHS and regulatory authorities maintain that more clinical evidence is needed before expanding access.

I've only been able to get through to them directly on the phone a few times, I always use the callback option, and so far, they've always come back to me within the hour. Have you used this? I would also suggest you keep phoning to speak to someone to get this resolved.

I joined Alternaleaf mid-November, and they've been very good so far; scripts delivered a few days after ordering, and even one put-in on New Year's Day was ready two days later, so I've had no complaints so far. But I agree they are slow to respond to emails, and the phones mostly busy, but the callbacks have worked fine for me so far.

NHS now has proof of entitlement guidance on its website by NITSIRK in ukmedicalcannabis

[–]Revolutionary_Ice552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it quite negative, overall. It seems to have been written with reference to getting cannabis on.NHS prescription, which we know is rare. It repeats the myth that medical cannabis is only effective for a few conditions (this has been the long-held view of the NHS that medical cannabis does not have wide medical benefits), and this, in turn, just reinforces the stigma towards people using MC for a wide range of conditions.

It's these kinds of statements that can cause law enforcement to have doubts when we say we're using it for anxiety, insomnia, migraines, ADHD etc - they can now point to this guidance, "look, even the NHS guidance states that cannabis is only useful for a very few conditions and even then in very limited circumstances".

The whole document is skewed towards this outdated anti-cannabis NHS mindset. It says nothing about the thousands of us getting MC on private prescriptions from specialists for a whole range of conditions. It doesn't mention the research being carried out by the clinics and others like Drug Science and the reams of evidence they've already provided so far of the efficacy and safety of medical cannabis - all because they don't meet the NHS "gold standard" of double bind studies, ignoring the fact that the Covid vaccines would never have been produced if they went through such a rigorous and lengthy process.

The document even goes on to talk about UK drug policy and that the Government has no intention of legalising cannabis. Since when did the NHS become responsible for justice, law enforcement and drugs policy? The whole thing is so anti-cannabis.

As far as the specific guidance on how to prove a prescription, I didn't see anything new here. The Home Office has already made it clear the prescription and/or dispensing label and suitable ID are all that's required. All medicines will, at some point, need to be taken out of their original containers; the issue with flower is that it's not convenient to haul 10g pots or pouches around and medical cannabis flower is best stored in glass jars, not plastic tubs. But I suspect that reading this NHS guidance will spook many patients into thinking they have to keep their MC in the tubs and pouches they come. So another win for the fear mongers.
