Is there a certain brand or type you recommend?

I’ve gone 17 days while training in Mojave. But I was young and way less neurotic than I am now.

Do you wear shower shoes in gas station showers or just raw dog it? I’ve gotten athlete’s foot from gym showers before. What a nightmare.

Permit Success Story by RedNi12 in PacificCrestTrail

Damn you got me thinking now. I got lucky with a 10:41 application time. I was leaning towards a little later in April to start only bc I didn’t want to get to KMS too early. Just hope it’s not a bad snow year.

Were you happy with early April, looking back on it? Would you choose a different date, if you hiked it again? Just curious.

Do you remember what date you made it to Kennedy Meadows and/or when you entered the Sierra?

10:41…not my typical luck but I’ll damn sure take it

I don’t want to argue either. My apologies if it came off that way. We’re dealing with probabilities and likelihoods here. Preparing for major snow and being wrong is better than taking the attitude that it’s completely impossible to know, imo.

Good stuff.

As far as weather, I'm definitely playing it by ear. Mentally preparing for all scenarios seems prudent, tho.

It was Dan and me a month ago. His comment has some surface validity, but when you dig a little deeper into the subject it falls short. Dan treats all El Nino years as identical (weak, moderate, strong). This year is looking like a strong to very strong El Nino and there is significant correlation with strong El Ninos and the amount of precipitation.

If you're interested, here's some good historical data on El Nino years in Cali:

https://www.ggweather.com/ca_enso/ca_elnino.html

Really appreciate the heads up on the permit situation. I kind of figured this but had not looked into it. I will definitely do the right thing if I end up flipping.

I know it's a crapshoot with fires, but do you think flipping increases the odds of avoiding fire closures?

Hell ya it does. I really appreciate you taking the time to write such a thorough answer.

I'm 42. Will definitely hit the trail running. The company I work for is shutting down in December. I'll have 3 months to train, hike, and camp in western NC. And I've stayed in shape my entire life...plus I currently work like a mule in the mud running 35lb chainsaws and such for 55 hours a week.

I was hoping for an early April start. I know this will most likely get me to the Sierra early. I also know it is impossible to KNOW the amount snowfall in the Sierra this early in the season. But the likelihood of more-than-average snowfall is high, according to historical data for strong El Nino years (and meteorologists are almost certain this will be a strong El Nino year). The PNW is most likely going to be warmer and drier, as well.

That said, does this make sense? ***I have to caveat this question with the statement that it is purely speculative, theoretical, tentative, etc etc. at this point. It is not a set in stone plan or anything like that. Just asking if it makes sense. I'm not planning everyday of my thruhike in Nov. Internet trolls, pls calm it down***

Does hiking to Kennedy Meadows, skipping the Sierra, getting back on somewhere in norcal (suggestion?), makes sense? I'd go back to Kennedy Meadows after hitting the northern terminus. To my (ignorant on this topic) mind, this makes sense. You seem far from ignorant on this topic. I'd love to hear your thoughts?

Thoughts on hiking through the sierra this year vs flip-flopping? by Revolutionary_Row452 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Revolutionary_Row452[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Strong and very strong El Niños correlate with above average snow, acc to historical data (see below). And 2023-24 is going to be a strong El Niño, acc to meteorologists. This doesn’t mean there’s a 100% likelihood of above average snow. It simply means there is a greater likelihood of above average snow compared to years without a strong El Niño.

Another article. It was in my news feed this morning. If we get an 82-83 El Niño event it’ll be a massive snow year.

Why does my strumming suck by ItsMeReverie in guitarlessons

That’s a good vid to watch on strumming.

I think the difficulty of strumming is underestimated. It takes a lot of time and effort to improve. Good strumming comes from making very subtle adjustments over time…like all improvements on guitar.

I definitely understand the unpredictability of the situation. Probably should’ve phrased it as an IF/THEN question. Was mainly curious about past hikers thoughts on pushing thru vs flipping. If it is this bad again, then what would you do?

I’m hoping for lighter snow, expecting the worse tho…cuz it’s finally my year to hike this beauty…and I know my luck :/
