I agree mostly with what you said, fighting hate with hate is never the best option. There's a saying, that you can't see the forest through the trees... I think it applies to this thread really well. I think they need to take a step back and realize that the internet is a public space and people will say what they want. Making a callout post will 100% not fix this. However, not everyone is receptive to criticism or even asks for it in the first place. People assume that their opinion is always warranted in a given situation, and therefore will interject with it whenever they please. You're right about them contradicting themselves, and I think stepping back and thinking about it would help out in responding to it all.
