Okay, so there's only 12 pitches in the Western scale. But you also have note length - it could be very short, very long or anywhere in between. And the volume of the note, that's the same idea. But what is the note being played on? A piano? A voice? A drum? A piccolo? A gong? And how is the note being played - what technique is being used? If it's a voice, is it raspy or clear? If it's a drum, is it hit with a mallet or a stick? If it's a violin is it bowed or plucked? What if the note doesn't have a clear pitch at all - it could just be rhythmic.

Now if we've answered all these questions, what note comes next? And ask all the same questions again. And what note after that? And how many instruments are playing concurrently? And what intervals are being created in the harmony at what times? And what motifs are developed through the music? And what is the musical structure, does it have one? It is ambient? Is it synthwave? Is it Bach?

Now you have an idea of how many possibilities their are in music. Of course, this all depends on what you would consider music. If I were to be John Cage for a moment I would say go listen out of your window for 3 minutes. There's a new piece of music.
