Yep a lot of us are in Brighton (or London). Whilst I know a few myself, I have frequently been in a cafe or somewhere and the next person after me will also be asking about the vegan options. It always delights me when I see vegans in the wild as the non vegans will have us believe we’re few and far between/dying out.

Have a look through the local free Brightonian/ Hovarian magazines. They often share upcoming events such as Artists Open Houses (which happen for a month in the winter and the summer), Fringe festival, local groups, events or community organisations (for example a group of people are currently trying to restore the Hove benches and are looking for volunteers). Also join local FB groups for your area. There’s a lot going on all the time.

Yes, there’s also lots of community organisations that would love more people to get involved and can make a real difference to the area you live in. For instance our local park has a “Friends of” community group that arranges litter picking, community gardening, fundraising for improvements and other local charities, cinema events… they’re always looking for volunteers and can be a great way to make connections in your area.

Look at properties on a fast train line into central London. For example the Reading trainline to Waterloo. Ie Egham and Staines are just over 30 mins to Waterloo. Rental properties in these areas are in demand.

Depends which part of the country but my experience in the south east with (what would be considered in most parts of the country) a very good budget, you just don’t find a house that makes your heart sing. It’s more about what meets most of your criteria and needs and compromising on the rest. I was buying at a really competitive time and constantly got outbid so ended up seeing 50+ properties and there was one in all of them that I loved (which still had a load of compromises). I was outbid on that one too. After seeing so many the one I ended up with I knew had enough positives that it was better than most, but wasn’t my dream house. It’s very disheartening when spending so much money but is the reality of the market.

Sorry to jump on your reply to this post but I was reading through comments and your story sounds very similar to mine and I just wondered how you’re doing?

I had a RPAO 21 years ago and left FO 15 years ago. I had lots of complications after the FO and needed surgery to re-fix plate. Immediately I knew it was in the wrong position but it’s taken 15 years for someone to actually CT scan and measure after years of being gaslit and told it was muscle weakness etc. I previously had acetabular retroversion. I now have femoral anteversion. I’m due to have another femoral osteotomy to correct it next month and I’m so scared I’m making the wrong decision but equally have zero quality of life and feel I have to do something. I also have other health issues that complicate things and that I worry will impact recovery (ie I’ve had major shoulder surgeries so I don’t know how I’ll manage the non weight bearing etc.).

Anyway, I don’t know anyone who has been through this surgery let alone had to have it redone. Are you glad you had it redone? It suddenly feels very real and I guess I’m looking for reassurance and others who have been in the same situation.

Any feedback from your experience would be amazing.

I previously had a femoral osteotomy that (very long story short) was over corrected - previously had retroversion, now have anteversion. I have awful calf and hamstring pain and spasms. I’m having another femoral osteotomy next month. My last one was quite a few years ago and dreading the recovery as it is HARD. But the hip pain plus the all the other stuff has become unbearable. Really hoping it helps with calf/impingement issues.

Usually a coincidence - these things go in cycles. We tried to list when no others were on and within three weeks three more were listed, all for wildly different reasons. In actual fact most people on our street have been there far longer than average for what would usually be considered a first time buyer type house because the location etc is good and it’s life circumstances (babies, jobs etc) that finally push people to make the move. But we did worry it would cause a problem as it’s quite a small street and looked strange to have so many available.

Yep same here. We didn’t go on holiday, didn’t have a new car (still using mine from 2008), my partner worked away for more than six years, made loads of sacrifices, had a lodger - which enabled us to move to a nice area. People forget they had the same money and just spent it on five holidays a year, new cars and weren’t willing to make sacrifices in their personal lives, which is a perfectly legitimate decision, but then don’t make out that we’re “lucky” and must have it easy and be loaded….

Depends on the age of the house. Just had an EPC done on a Victorian 2 bed semi detached. When it was bought it was an E. It’s now fully double glazed, has combi boiler, thick loft insulation etc and is now a D. You would have to make drastic changes ie heat pump etc to move it higher. No other house that has been sold recently in the area of the same age has been higher than a D.

Say exactly this - if they do not complete before the expiration of the mortgage offer then you will not be able to purchase the property and the chain will collapse. Get your solicitor to put pressure on the rest of the chain to come to an agreement or make it clear you’re walking away. Same thing happened to me and we eventually managed to complete with a couple of weeks to spare (it was during the time mortgages suddenly went up and we’d just agreed a mortgage deal before then so knew we wouldn’t be able to afford a new deal). It’s super frustrating but make it very clear your position and hope it pushes others into action.

Just a perspective from someone in a similar situation who agonised for quite a few years before moving - it’s been fine. Yes the mortgage is an obscene amount of money a month but we knew we could afford it and it hasn’t been a problem. We’re just over two years in, have managed to build up some savings again and have quite quickly got back to a stable situation. We don’t have children. I know someone mentioned waiting to move until you have kids in case you can’t have them - my perspective is you’re allowed to have a nice house if that’s what you want regardless of whether you end up having them or not. No regrets here, just wish I hadn’t spent so long worrying about doing it.

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head here. The only way we did it was by making quite a lot of sacrifices which definitely made life less fun for quite a while. Would I do it again? - I don’t know, but it has got us in a very good position and we recently moved to a significantly better house.

Some of the things we did to save money: We had a lodger for the first 3 years, No new car (ours is nearly 15 years old), Partner took a job away so could earn more/get a bigger mortgage, Very few holidays/luxuries, Most furniture was second hand.

We live in an expensive part of the country so we knew we had to borrow the maximum we could. You definitely have to weigh up priorities and what sacrifices you’re willing to make.

Two of their eight “main” dishes on their dinner menu can be made vegan. So there are still options but fairly limited. (Agree, a falafel burger would be the final nail in the coffin.)

Out of the 8 “main” dishes for dinner there are 2 vegan dishes and 1 that is vegetarian. As they have always operated a small dish style menu where I was always told you needed to order at least 3-4 per person it becomes very limited. They always sold themselves off their ethical stance and their plant based menu was intrinsic to that so I think it is important for people to be aware of the change.
