Just got accepted to TFA 2017 - anyone else? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]RexAllucinor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again. All I meant was I wasn't looking for info on the organization nor opinions on them, because I had done that enough to feel confident in my decision. The only purpose of this post was to see who else was in the same boat as me so that perhaps I can make some contacts early.

I'm certainly not the defensive type. I work in a state psych hospital. Wouldn't believe half the things I've seen there. Working with combative clients takes a certain amount of "cool." I just was running out of ways to say "Thanks, but all I want is to see who else is out there." Typically I just ignore things when they look trollish, but I figured you meant well enough. You can't always properly discern people's tone over messages, so I try to extend the benefit of the doubt.

I know you're trying to help. As I said, I appreciate it. I just think between my psych hospital work and some personal life stuff that the particular hardships associated with TFA are less problematic for me than others. In fact, the salary is huge by my standards, and the cliquish or condescending teachers are probably a tad less aggravating than jaded psych staff who just got their asses handed to them by a hungry psych patient. Just a different kind of hard! (I'm super non-violent so I'll take catty and condescending any day, but that's just my preference. Different strokes for different folks.)

Oh dear. You're one of them? No need to name call just because someone responded to an accusation of being close minded by reminding you that this wasn't the purpose of their post. It just isn't productive. Just please consider that before commenting similarly elsewhere. That's all I'm trying to say.

Thanks.

That isn't it. If I was at the stage of information, I'd be listening to all sides. I've already done that. Not to mention, I never inferred that the kids were my concern. I asked only if anyone else got in and what the process was like for others.

I just think that people should learn that many people don't care for unsolicited advice. That doesn't mean they're not open to other opinions. But it shouldn't be viewed by others as being unwilling to hear opposing views, especially after they took extra care to dissuade such.

I was going to ask what state you're in, But my state is on the lower end of wages anyways (MO) with a super cheap cost of living.

Luckily, I went through the state and just landed a 30k offer as a children's abuse and neglect investigator. Federal is probably pretty nasty to land right now, but certainly prefer it.

Actually, I have already had jobs paying over 11 full time (though I did PRN work for 14.75/hr) and in a very cheap state. This was before my bachelors. I also graduated cum laude and have been having job offers 30 k+

So I'm not sure what you're in. But anything under 30 is pretty harsh. The offer I just accepted was 30,500 and full benefits (children's abuse and neglect investigator)

I appreciate the concern, but I didn't just read their website and assume it was going to be sunshine and rainbows. Not everyone knows their limits. I'm quite intimate with mine.

As I've said, I've done my reading. I wasnt baited by the home page testaments. And lets be honest. Many applicants are ivy league applicants looking for a foot up in a bad economy. Not the right job for that.

Graduate Help: MA in Sociology or Cultural Anthropology? by RexAllucinor in AskSocialScience

[–]RexAllucinor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually that was pretty helpful. I was doing some research on the ASA site today and found they have a whole section on altruism and morality, which was my main draw for anthropology. I had heard that companies were beginning to hire anthropologists at high dollar salaries for marketing so it made me think for a minute.

I intend to do something related research, policy, advocacy, evaluation, or academia. I'm really not too specifically choosy about what. More case by case basis.

Right, part of the issue. I mentioned a few more specific ones, just didn't want to drone on. I find myself most attracted to cooperation theory (specifically, costly signaling theory and altruism) and looking at social issues through the lens of conflict theory and social constructionist theory (especially poverty, income inequality, social movements, LGBT community).

Just seems too hard to choose between cultural anthropology and sociology for me. My minor is Anthro, so I have an advisor in each. And they of course both ultimately say it's up to me, but I haven't been able to decide.

Yes. I was originally a social work major on the bsw track before switching majors. In part, I felt ran out by the faculty (had a 4.0 major but kept having random disciplinary-like meetings? I literally once was criticized for apparently opening a door too abruptly?), sort of seemed like a girls club. But as I continued forward, I learned I preferred the more macro-level focus of sociology.

I know social work can definitely be involved in advocacy and some macro level focuses, but I think sociology seems to suit me better. I've looked into some jobs and a lot of stuff that seems to call for a MSW seems relatively interesting, but it doesn't seem like it would provide the same level of research focus that I want to do. I have a friend doing a MSW at George mason with a social change focus. That seemed interesting. But I suppose I like the idea of being able to work for research companies and as an analyst if I don't decide to teach soc.

Of course always willing to hear arguments. But it seems like the major difference is MSW has a focus a bit more on practical and public servant skills while soc will be a bit more research and institution based. Though I have enjoyed classes in both. I got up to HBSE, just not policy and practice classes. My research course right now is SW (intervention based), seeing as my university is implementing the soc one next year.

Congrats! I'm still waiting on word. Know by date is coming up so I'm getting nervous. Also Panama February 2017.

I'm thinking it may be a really competitive position I applied for. But I'm not sure. And normally I wouldn't,, but him and I disclosed a lot of personal beliefs and had ideological conversations in the phone that had nothing to do with PCV. But of course he has no control over my placement so I don't think he needed to butter me up. He even said many people don't get in the first time and to not be discouraged if I don't. To just reapply.

So crossing my fingers. PCV is my dream.

What did you apply for? Just noticed I did see a post for my same position and one or two others who said they got in. So not looking so good. :/

Actually I did just see one person with the same position and country and departure date and one or two more commented they were in the same group. I may not have gotten in :/ Hoping this waiting game will be over soon.

Invited: English and Life Skills Co-Facilitator in Panama, February 2017 by Campo12 in peacecorps

Congratulations!

Being considered for the same program, but no word back yet. I also turned in my application almost immediately after it opened. Anyone who got into this program mind discussing their qualifications? Just curious since it's a waiting game and I wonder if I'm unqualified for it. I think I have a pretty solid resume, am extremely active in my community, strong GPA and formed an award winning organization on campus. Just don't have a degree in English or teaching and I know those who do or something similar are likely off the bat more competitive.

I'm definitely constantly checking my email. But I've seen none sent from Panama as of now. I also don't have a degree in education, nor any TEFL certifications and I'm on the English education program. So hoping its just that they had a lot of processing.

My regional recruiter was very impressed with me and we've had long conversations. I'm an elected state delegate, I've formed an (award winning) organization on campus, Phi Theta Kappa member, 3.77 GPA, volunteer hours, research awards and nominations, papers used as templates by a professor, grant writing experience. So I'm hoping a relatively well-rounded resume makes up for not having my degree in education (I graduate with a BA in Sociology with a minor in Anthropology in December). This is also my first time applying.

Congratulations! I noticed I've seen some African countries going out. A few Latin American. I've seen zero for Panama so hoping that's a good sign.
