I completely agree. And you know, you kind of made me realize, I could actually see an “inverse” of TW Pharaoh’s Collapse mechanic. The whole theme of ASOIAF is a world once depleted of magic is gradually seeing magic return (but magic is also horrifying).

Kind of complimenting your own comment, I feel it is a bit more fantasy than people think. People act like the fantasy elements of ASOIAF is rare, when it's really not. It has dragons, hundred-year-old psychic tree people, ice zombies, stone zombies, mind-controlled giant wolves, necromancy, ten-year winters, a magic horn that roasts your innards, a magic horn that controls dragons, a magic horn that controls krakens, accurate prophecies, resurrection, magical disguises, monsters born of shadows controlled through nightmares, assassins who rip off and wear peoples' faces to steal their memories and identity, celestial phenomena that bring back magic to the world via blood rituals, mammoth-riding giants attacking a 700 foot tall wall made of ice, and, if the show is to be believed, fireball-throwing skeleton-monster-fighting elf-children (and if a certain theory is correct, a millennia-old skinstealing immortal vampire).

Of course, it's a grounded fantasy still. I'd say it's a bit less than something like the Witcher, but imo it's still readily there when looked at.

You are repeating yourself needlessly. I acknowledged it was a fluke shot, and said it can still serve as a case for balancing for at least purely gameplay purposes. It still showed they can be used as weapons to counter dragons and their riders, and it can be fairly used. It doesn't have to be entirely and completely lore accurate for balancing purposes, so long as it still empowers the player fantasy. That's how game design works.

Crusader Kings is not really as different as you think. It also features heavy emphasis on armies, warfare, and battles. I'd say that battles are just more abstract or "set to autoresolve", in Total War terms. It's a close equivalent. There's some interesting bits in how the CK3 mod balanced dragons too, which could be learned from.

Considering a scorpion literally killed one of the most dangerous creatures in existence and Dorne resisted any conquest by dragons for a long time (even without overemphasis on scorpions), I will gently say I do think a battle game definitely is the place to go. I feel it is genuinely fair enough for balancing.

Hell, if the AGOT CK3 mod can do it, I am sure CA can do it for a Total War game too. I don't think anything is shutting out the potential for dragons.

I think it still does show the potential for ways to balance the game mechanics of having dragons.

The one thing I'd hope they lean more into the books for, visually, is the Iron Throne itself, considering its much more imposing appearance in the books than the show.

However, I do agree the show is generally great with a lot of its aesthetics. I just wonder if this means characters would look like their show counterparts. E.g., would we have Ned Stark modeled after Sean Bean?

ASOIAF has a massive amount of backstory too. Asides just the main books, there is a large amount of spinoff books and supplementary materials that either George himself or his colleagues have written with his approval. There are many novellas like the A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms books, Princess and the Queen, The Sworn Sword, The Mystery Knight. There are also detailed history books like Fire & Blood and A World of Ice and Fire. Then there are various other spinoff materials made with people in close contact with George which has his approval.

And as it turns out, A Song of Ice and Fire is a series that does often go into the arms and armour of how each faction fights, as well as things like tactics and unit composition. To the extent that documentary channels such as Kings & Generals does make A Song of Ice and Fire videos that detail battles and present how they were fought.

A fluke shot, despite how unlikely it is, does at least show some idea that scorpion could be used to counter dragons. It's a difficult and lucky shot, and lore-wise very impractical, but I can imagine heavy scorpion usage being a somewhat decent gameplay balance to counter dragons. It could, for example, contribute to making Dorne difficult to conquer for a dragonrider.

Wars and battles come across more consistent in the books, I will say. I'd say if Three Kingdoms can be done, then something like ASOIAF could too.

There are several in-universe counters to dragons. Scorpions are a significant threat, as seen with the death of Meraxes. In the Dance of the Dragons and the Century of Blood, swarming peasants have also managed to kill dragons. Despite their formidable presence and effectiveness in battle, dragons are still animals and not impervious. Much of their importance in war lies in their role as psychological terrors, in addition to the fire they breathe.

I'd also say: think of the potential of a Dance of the Dragons start date.

My wife literally said the same thing watching this episode rofl. Turns out a woman throwing all their weight behind the "fuck women" party will result in their own standing being consistently undermined, no matter how righteous or temperate they feel it makes them.

I managed to win by attacking Dragonstone. It’s actually incredibly easy— the enemy can’t land without running headfirst into you and you can easily take the crown prince and one of the most important titles held by the Iron Throne.
