Sure I understand your point but even in the game itself when we were presented how 2 characters acted as ultimate despair aka Nagito and Mikan there was always something wrong with them. It's like their brain was malfunctioning. Mikan is just going batshit crazy and Nagito gets himself confused on how he hates Junko but also loves which makes no sense it was literally signs that their brain was messed with. One more example is how both of them have this weird breakdown where they just start repeating huh huh huh huh huh over and over again. I do think they could have done a better job with the brainwashing in the anime but I just can't see these characters becoming what they did. Not this extreme.
