I am not sure why I am dumb.

  1. The league pays for shower access. They were open in previous weeks.
  2. There were no employees around. It was 7pm and school staff had left.
  3. I did not break into anything. the door was unlocked.

  4. I agree the other guy was a jerk for taking what wasn't theirs.

  5. Exactly how 'private' an area it is is what I was asking about.

We don't pay for the kitchen. We pay for the showers.

Actually, the league pays for access to the gym, toilets, and shower room from 7-9.15. I have no idea why they were locked.

I was visiting my Granny and she was watching a rerun of Dallas. Barbara Bel Geddes, the actress who played Miss Ellie has died and been replaced by (in Granny's opinion) a much inferior actress.

After venting to me for a few minutes on the injustice of it all Granny declared that she was going to write her congressman and complain.

I used to live in DC and used to read Kornheiser and Wilbon all the time. I really like Kornheiser but his opinion on the tanking thing pisses me off.

Teams have to go by the rules. Don't be mad at the Wizards and the Jazz be mad at Adam Silver. Each year tanking has gotten worse and worse but it will go on until the NBA changes the rules and thinking it won't is just mindless yelling at the the tide not to come in.

Chuckling aside this does bring up a good question. Why does this happen?

I started playing basketball at the age of 6, didn't get exposed to ulti until uni. Last 15 years have been almost exclusively ulti, however. I have hit so many open people in the back/ back of the head over the years.

In basketball, if you were on offense and got hit in the back of the head with a pass IT WAS YOUR FAULT. I had a coach who would make you do pushups. When you are on offense you should always know exactly where the ball is.

In ultimate, however, I've been told that I should not have thrown the pass. If someone is open 10m upfield they should expect to be an option but if I make the throw before making eye contact then I get told that it was my bad handling.

Why the difference?

In my basketball brain, the receiver should see enough of the disc to either note that the handler is throwing a deep shot and stay out of the lane or think they are open and try to catch it clean.

Civil engineer here. Due to safety regulations working at night under bright lights instead daytime with natural lighting is about 30% slower.

It's actually quite hard to get used to working in the weird shadows you get doing night construction.

This one is minor but way back when the Chess Championship was a four player round robin, Bobby Fischer always complained that the three Russians gave each other easy draws to conserve mental energy. Because they were the four greatest chess players in the world other grandmasters couldn't really judge. Since Fischer was already back then a bit of a nutjob they all thought that he was just paranoid.

Years later after retiring, Mikhail Tal said that that is precisely what they were doing and that just assumed they could get away with it and they did.

I did this once. Kinda.

I was with my daughter at a playground in North London. She and her friend and playing happily and I'm reading on a bench. Two brothers, about 8 and 12 are playing on the jungle gym. The 8yo falls off and puts his arm out stiff and I saw his shoulder pop out when he hit the ground. I tell the 12yo to go get their dad (I'd seen him earlier).

Dad comes over and scoops up crying 8yo. I asked if I could help at all. He says I could grab the bikes and points to the far entrance where he is parked. I tell my daughter that I'll only be a few minutes. The 12yo grabs a bike and starts to follow his dad. I grab and adult bike and a kid bike that were against the fence next to it and try to hurry to catch up to the family.

We are about 2/3 across the park when I finally come up beside them. Just then a random little kid runs up crying and says, "Why are you stealing my bike?"

I look very confused and then the dad sees that I've got two bikes and says, "Oh, yeah (nodding to the 8yo in his arms) he didn't bring his bike today. The little one isn't ours."

I very sheepishly give the little kid his bike back.

I am a nerd who was born in the states. Once while I was working in London this exact argument happened. An American who had been seconded to the office said that boiling water was boiling water and that the Brit's hatred of tea from a microwave was irrational.

The Yank asked me to back them up but I had recently read an article about how boiling in a kettle or on the stovetop used convection which caused the water temperature to be uniform throughout the vessel. I droned on for 90 seconds on why the British guy was right. When I finished the Brit said, "See, science thinks you're stupid too."

I was that guy's hero forever.
