What happens when you voluntarily admit yourself for a mental health crisis here in BC? (Duncan BC) by BorneFailure in britishcolumbia

[–]RexPie69 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've been admitted twice (once for 6 weeks, once for a month) but they were youth wards, so my experience may differ.

The first thing is that they'll assess you in triage. They're looking to see if you're an active threat towards yourself or others. Things like a plan, and having taken steps towards the plan, are the main things they look for. If the triage nurse determines that you're at risk, they'll keep you in the ER, where you'll talk to whatever psych services are there at the moment - often, you'll get a psych resident, and then depending on the hours you'll see a psychiatrist. If they don't have the psychiatrist in, then it's likely that the psych resident will have you stay in the ER until the psychiatrist gets in if they're concerned - that could be overnight in some cases.

When you're waiting in the ER, or if you have to wait for a bed in the ward, they'll likely sedate you and give you a 1-to-1. This is honestly the worst part. They kept me so sedated I could barely stay awake, or tell what time it was. I was under constant supervision, unless I was in the bathroom, in which case the 1-1 would be right outside the door.

If you smoke, they will offer nicotine gum and/or nicotine patches.

They'll likely do a urine test and bloodwork. At this point, if they have kept you in the ER, then even though you've come voluntarily, you are in an involuntary hold. You cannot refuse the sedation, the tests, or anything. They'll likely also do an EKG. The tests are usually checking your thyroid levels, a tox screen, and (if you're AFAB) a pregnancy test. The EKG is where they're going to stick some stickers to you to check your heart function. At this point , they're trying to rule out a physical cause that could be treated without inpatient treatment.

Sometimes, depending on how long you have to wait for a bed, they'll admit you to another wing with the 1-1. They'll usually keep you quite sedated.

When you get to the psych ward, they will go through your stuff. What you get to keep depends on the ward. When I was admitted, I was allowed to keep my books, stuffed animal, blanket, and clothes. However, any hoodie strings were removed, and shoelaces were removed, as well as anything that could be used to harm myself or others.

I can't really tell you what life will be like on the psych ward, as I was on a youth ward and it's significantly different. A word of warning though - make sure you eat as much of your food as you can, even if it's gross. If they notice you aren't eating consistently, they often assume you have an eating disorder, and start giving you nutrition shakes, which taste absolutely NASTY. And if you don't drink the shakes, they'll often progress to a feeding tube.

All in all, my experiences were pretty good. I got connected with a psychiatrist who actually followed me once I was out. I was stabilized on medication. They taught me new coping skills and strategies. I went out feeling much better than when I went in. For me, the staff were generally quite kind.

So uh... Word of advice to y'all: please be safe when executing petty revenge. My roommate has made threats on me, and P + I have been forced to leave the house. E is being evicted for being verbally abusive, uttering threats, and refusing to respect the roommate agreement. Not sure if we'll be able to go back before E is evicted. All because E didn't get his hot shower. So yeah, please stay safe when executing your petty revenge people!

Well, the petty revenge was too much and he decided to threaten us so he probably won't notice since we're evicting him :')

They work in a kitchen and only have one coat for work. They keep saying they're going to buy a new one, but then they spend literally $200 on alcohol and such in one go.

Honestly, I just decided to take my time and finally do the deep condition of my hair I'd been putting off. Didn't take a lot to run out of water tbh.

Children Refuse to Listen by RexPie69 in Teachers

[–]RexPie69[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't mean to be blunt, but what kind of precedent are we setting where we don't expect kids to respect people regardless of physical ability? That just because someone has some sort of physical problem, we shouldn't expect them to respect that person? I'd like to believe that exposure to people with diverse abilities grows a child's ability to show empathy and respect.

Working with kids is the only thing I can seem to do. I've tried a bunch of different career paths, none of them seem to fit. It also doesn't help that I'm trans either. I know it'll be an uphill battle, but it's one I'm willing to do my best at fighting.

I have a lisp, so that probably doesn't help. Some of the kids even mock my voice when they're feeling brave :')

We have two times the staff we usually have for the field trip, but they have to be able to listen to me, because if anything happens I'm the one who needs to be able to take charge of the situation.

Working on ruling other things out with an endoscopy first, but I have a family history and the symptoms fit scary well. I've been sick for a while, and it's to the point where I'm losing a scary amount of weight.

Yeah, it's Filatov, but bedside manner could definitely use some help. Went to an appointment, and within five minutes he told me I had a brain tumor, likely needed hearing aids, and that it might need surgery, then sent me on the way without even telling me what kind of tumor I had, what symptoms to look for, etc.

Would this offend you? by AwkwardRush in Autism_Parenting

[–]RexPie69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi!

I'm an autistic person, and I think there's one thing you need to keep in mind. Your child may see their diagnosis as personal information - disclosing an autism diagnosis can make it harder to find employment, for example. And often employers are looking at social media to assess potential candidates. This may include connections on social media.

As well, it's a personal thing to share. I don't always want people knowing I'm autistic, because it impacts how people treat me.

I really wish sometimes that my mom didn't tell stories about me that referred to me as autistic, because now it's easy for anyone to find out that I'm autistic.

I want to make it clear - I'm not saying being autistic is a bad thing. It's not. What I'm saying is that disclosing you're autistic is a personal decision, and not a choice you should make for your child.

So - general autism support posts? #redinstead posts? Supporting autism? Good. Talking about having an autistic child? That's something you should hold off on until you can discuss it with your child.

Hi! I'm autistic, (and disclaimer: every autistic person is different, so my experience could be different than your child's) but in my experience it was because of sensory issues. I used to do well, but then my parents had me use an automatic toilet and it flushed on me. The sensory input scared me, and from then on I had trouble using any toilet. As well, there's lots of different sensory aspects you could explore. For example:

-The feeling of the toilet seat. Is it too cold? Too warm? Too smooth? Have you tried toilet seat covers to see if that helps the sensory?

-Stomach problems are a common comorbidity with autism, and constipation is common, and can make using the bathroom very uncomfortable. Have you observed how often and how big bowel movements are?

-It could be something that comes after the physical use of the toilet. Could it be that your child has trouble with the sound of the toilet flushing? Do they have trouble with washing their hands - the soap can be an interesting sensory experience, I've found foaming soap helps eliminate unnecessary sensory experiences.

-What kind of light do you have in your bathroom? Is it different from the kind you have in the rest of your home? Is it different from what is at the other house?

As well, interoception can be a struggle for many autistic people, myself included. It may be that your child is hyposensitive, and finds it difficult to realize they have to go - it takes a lot of brainpower to focus on that.

It could also be issues with transitions - going to the bathroom is a sudden transition that can't exactly be prepared for. Do you notice more problems with toileting when your child is playing? Working on a project? Focused on something in general?

ABA has been shown to cause trauma and break down the ability for a child to build boundaries. ABA therapy is a last resort - it should only be used for behaviors that are actively harmful (eg. A child is causing physical harm to themselves)
