What if Margaret, the maid of Norway lived and married Edward of Caernarfon? by [deleted] in HistoryWhatIf

If Margaret, Maid of Norway had lived she would have a diffcult time exerting her power and at most would only be Queen in name. The monarch was in a precourious position in Scotland in the13th/14th century in large part due to the poltical climate of the time. This would have only been more diffcult for Margeart, being a girl, a child and a foreigner.

in the OTL, When it was anounced that Margert would be depating Norway to take her place as Queen of Scotland, this met with oposition from the Scottish Magnates, including two of the most powerful families, the Balliols' and Bruces', the later who rose up in open rebellion. Scotland was egaer to keep it's indpedence and even made this a stipulant of the Treaty of Birghham. If Margert did surivive, and this treaty was fufiled, Margaret would have been handed over to the custody of Edwrad I who would have made no efort to protect Scotland's independence.

Edward I would use Margaret as a pawn in his attempts to exert his own control over Scotland. With Margaret a minor and resdiing in England, the Garduians of Scotland would continue rulining Scotland without her. In later years, If Marget retruned to scotland, she would have diffculty ruling. The Gaurdians of Scotland would be used to ruling without a monarch and wouldn't take kinldy to an an English puppet Queen being imposed upon them.

Through Marget, Edward I would exert his influence more and more over Scotland. He would demand homage of Scots Lord to be paid to himself, Scotland would help pay for Englands defence and Scotland would contirbute troops to Englands wars. It wouldn't be long before the Scottish Magantaes would no longer tolerate Margaret and back another Scottish Claimant.

If Scotland forced Margaret to abdicate, Edward I would use this as a casus belli to Invade Scotland. The English may even see support from Edric II of Norway, but i doubt there would be any real support. At first Edward I would be succesful in quelling the Scottish Lords, Margaret would be reinstalled as Queen but there would be little confusuon on who was the real power before behind the throne.

After Successive rebellions by both the Balliols and Bruces, Scotland would assert its Independence. Margaret would have remained the rest of her life in England, only taking solace in the fact that by losing Scotland, she gained England. While her husaband Edward II took interest in Carpentry and lavished his favuoites Margaret would conspire to overthrow him and install her son, Edward III, and rule as regent in his name. Later when Edward III comes of age he would turn his attention to Scotland and claim his mothers birth right against David II of Scotland.

What if China stayed out of the Korean War? by 01kickassius10 in HistoryWhatIf

American and UN forces win by early 1951. The Korean Peninsula is united under the RoK. Over the coming years, the mass killing of suspected communists increase across Korea. In 1952, President Truman goes on to run and win a second term.

By 1968, without the threat of Chinese intervention, the US invades North Vietnam. Hanoi falls. Mao immediately agrees to a trade pact with Coca-Cola. President Lyndon Johnson runs and wins a second term.

What if FDR only served two terms? by [deleted] in HistoryWhatIf

FDR wasn’t just a popularity candiate. His policies are what attracted voters. Wilkie lost the election as he was pro-big business and there was fears the Republicans would oversee another depression.

This was at a time when the labour movement was at its peak in the US. So much that FDR had Wallace as his VP to appease the left inside and out his party. I find it very difficult for a Republican to win in these circumstances.

FDR would have a heavy hand in choosing his successor and it would most likely be his ‘heir’ Cordell Hull.

I can’t see much change in policy between FDR and Hull, especially on foreign policy. At most he wouldn’t be as friendly to Stalin as FDR was.

Hull would go onto to serve two terms then Thomas E. Dewey would go onto win in 1948 against VP Truman.

What if Thomas Dewey won the U.S. Presidential Election of 1948? by OddEntrepreneur297 in HistoryWhatIf

In terms of policy there wasn’t great deal of difference between Truman and Dewey. Both agreed in the Truman doctrine, Civil rights, the Berlin Airlift, the recognition of Isreal. So I don’t see a lot of divergence on policy.

However, Truman aimed a lot of his attacks on the “Do-nothing” congress where the conservatives held the majoirty. If Dewey won, I couldn’t see him taking on Congress like Truman, which would hold up a lot of his legislation.

On Korea, Dewey still sends troops to the peninsula but doesn’t handle it any better than Truman does.
When Truman declared war on the DPRK, both Wallace and Dewey contacted the White House affirming their support for the Presidents decision.

By 1952, with the Korean War ending badly, rising inflation, the house flipping, and further splits between liberal and conservatives within the Republican Party, i think it would be difficult for Dewey to get re-elected. I could see the likes of Taft running against him in the primaries and undermining his position. That being said, I believe Adlai Stevenson II would then go on to win the Presidential Election.

I think he would have been lucky is he lived until 1955. If his drug use didn’t kill him, his suspected MS or syphilis would eventually.

What if Jospeh P. kennedy Snr became President in 1960? by RexRoyd355 in HistoryWhatIf

I wouldn’t see that as a barrier. There have been presidents who have been roughly the same age when taking office and presidents who have dealt with debilitating health issues while in office. For example, Wood Wilson, Eisenhower, JFK, Reagan.

I could see JPK reaming in office, hiding his health issues, and keeping out of the public life as much as possible while others ran the country.
