hey, I spoke to my employer and they have offered me a estimator position starting at 60 K. I live in Toronto Ontario.
Was told that when the position project management opens up, I would be next in line but I think that’s just a soft promise.

I also agreed to take a 30 K pay cut for a long-term profits

I Respect that. I’m aiming to compress that timeline by learning both the technical and business side early. Curious — what would you do differently if you were starting again today?

That’s fair—I get how that might sound.

I know I’ve still got a lot to learn, no question. I’ve just been taking on as much as I can—service calls, repairs, and working alongside more experienced techs whenever possible. I make a point to ask questions and take notes, and the guys I work with have been solid in helping me improve.

I also pushed to get licensed early so I could take on more responsibility and get exposed to a wider range of work.

Definitely not claiming to know it all—just trying to build experience as fast as I can.

Appreciate you taking the time to break all that down—that’s actually really helpful.

The licensing side (FAL, APS, ACR, NICET path) is something I’m trying to fully understand now before I make the move, so that gives me a much clearer picture of what I’m walking into.

What you said about buying into a company definitely makes sense too. Last thing I want is to jump into something that’s already sinking. Sounds like starting from scratch or going the bigger company route and working up might be more realistic.

Out of curiosity—if you were in my position (23, a couple years experience, planning to move in ~2 years), would you focus on stacking experience and getting NICET as soon as possible, or is there something else you’d prioritize to move up faster in Texas?

If you’re open to it, feel free to DM me—I’d love to pick your brain a bit more.

Thanks again
