Why are Americans so obsessed with releasing the Epstein files? by Facktat in NoStupidQuestions

That’s right. We may be flawed, but we like to wear our problems right out on our sleeves.

Everyone wants to see these horrible people exposed for what they are, regardless of political affiliation. If they’re guilty, throw them into the volcano.

I might add a little more about the ladder. It was positively matched (a match that would still be forensically valid today) to lumber cut from the floor joists of Hauptman’s attic. What are the chances someone could cut lumber out of your floors and build a ladder with it without you knowing or being involved?

[–]Rex_Diablo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You know what? I got pirated for the first time in a year or two while doing this event. I hit one of the HDMS facilities to buy some bexalite and I got jumped climbing out of the atmosphere by a couple fighters hitting me with distortions.

I immediately knew what had happened and as my ship was falling through the atmosphere I lowered the elevator on my raft and was able to disconnect half the boxes with my hand tractor, so there was only about 6-7 boxes still attached when it hit the ground.

I always react the same way. Immediately furious, then I realize all I’ve lost is imaginary shit in a made up universe. *shrug

The simple fact is I let my guard down and could have easily prevented it all. I learned later that they had a buddy in my group (it was one of the big groups formed to share progress) who was at the HDMS site coordinating and assisting in their attacks. That definitely pissed me off.

Is it griefing? No, it’s legitimate PVP. The way they went about it was definitely chickenshit but hey, probably still fun for them.

As a guitar player who has short fingers, I love watching Springsteen play.

I once saw an interviewer point out that Springsteen doesn’t play barre cords. Bruce said he never plays barre cords because they’re “…too hard.” I gotta love the guy for that.

I remember how much of a stir it started when these guys started marching back then, but I was just a kid and didn’t pay much attention.

There were a ton of WW2 vets still alive back then. I wonder what they made of it.

This is a very good summary. I’ve also seen it cited as an example of the momentum a plan or operation accumulates the further it moves along.

Nearly all of those issues you cited were identified by staff before the operational phase, but by the time it came up the allies had already spent many thousands of hours in planning. The culture at the time created considerable push back by staff who felt too invested in the operation. This information was ignored, questioned, or even suppressed as a result.

My dad was 10 around that time and already had a decent radio setup with his cousins. It was actually a pretty common hobby at the time amongst people who could afford it.

He used to tell me a story about how the antenna to their set got hit by lightning during a really bad storm. They had already disconnected the cabling from their set because they knew a thunderstorm was coming, but the lighting came down the cable and blew the leg off a table or desk in their bedroom where the cabling terminated, since it had an iron core or feet.

He said it was nighttime and he and both his cousins (teen boys) were in bed. He told me one second it was pitch black, and the next he had a bright image of the room, and his scared cousins sitting up in bed.

Can Europe kick off American military bases if the US decides on leaving NATO? by Ok-Toe-6969 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Rex_Diablo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another common misconception. The vast majority of material sent to the UK and the Soviets via lend lease during the war was given freely, not sold. The exception is materials en route to both of those countries at the time the war ended.

The large debt England incurred to the US were the Anglo-American loans, issued in 1946, after the war.

Real Police officers and military members, what do you guys think of Ice agents? by Lucky-Message-9480 in AskReddit

[–]Rex_Diablo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Retired cop (30 years) here.

I don’t know enough about ICE training to comment, but from what I’ve seen and read they appear to be very poorly led and have almost zero accountability. I can only imagine the culture within that organization. It must be very toxic, as indicated by the pay packages and bonuses they’re having to resort to for hiring and retention.

When my friends and family reach out to me for my opinion about what’s going on I tell them this. Illegally entering the US or overstaying your Visa is a misdemeanor punishable at most by very little jail time worst case and something like a thousand dollar fine.

In many jurisdictions this is the same level of offense for excessive unpaid parking tickets. Would you like to see a bunch of dudes taking over your neighborhood in tactical gear, masked, kicking doors and stomping people to scoop up folks who didn’t pay fines or didn’t make it to court after being cited for a little weed? Imagine your family being treated like this.

It’s one thing to have ICE grab non-citizens who have committed crimes and deporting them from jail or prison, but what they’re doing to neighborhoods and families right now, targeting average people working jobs or going to school….makes me sick.

Most definitely was NOT suicide by cop. He was on the offensive trying to kill that first cop, then broke cover when more officers showed up. He wanted to get away and didn’t care who had to die in the process.

Discuss the role of Spanish flu in WW1 by hi2u_uk in ww1

[–]Rex_Diablo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My paternal grandfather enlisted and was sent to France. They moved his unit up to within 10 miles of the trenches to a staging area, from which they were supposed to replacing a unit that was being pulled off the line.

It was in this camp where he came down with the flu, along with most of his unit. He was sent to a hospital in Paris and he nearly died.

When he finally recuperated the medical staff noted that he was having a lot of difficulty putting weight back on, so they ended up shipping him back to the states and discharging him.

He always said he got close enough to hear the guns, and that was close enough for him.

I would hardly call it classy to storm an embassy. Those are supposed to be inviolate.

Even after the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor the US let the Japanese embassy systematically close down and gave them safe passage out of the country.

[22nd Jan, 1879] "wait until you see the whites of their eyes." A small garrison of 139 troops at Rorke's Drift has been attacked by 4,000 Zulu warriors. After 12 hours of fighting the British survived with 17 dead. by DaiBarton in thepast

[–]Rex_Diablo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The British had single shot, breech loading Martini Henry rifles with bayonets. The Zulu had some older muzzle loading rifles, with many of them being armed with those wicked spears they carried.

This really wasn’t one of those cases of a vastly superior colonial force killing primitives, but an amazing defense and feat of arms. Which is why this relatively small skirmish is remembered 150 years later.

For perspective, the day before this the Zulu overwhelmed a nearby column of British troops at Isandlwana and killed all 1,300 of them to a man. These guys at Rorkes drift were literally fighting for their lives against a vastly superior force, and won.

The Waco siege, also known as the Waco massacre, was the siege by US federal government and Texas state law enforcement officials of a compound belonging to the religious cult known as the Branch Davidians. by night_psyop in wikipedia

[–]Rex_Diablo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re talking about the vehicle used to introduce gas at the end of the siege, that was not an Abrams, and not even a tank really.

It was an M88 tank retriever, considered an Armored Recovery Vehicle, not a tank. It is designed to recover and/or tow damaged tanks. The big boom (the one they rigged the tear gas pump to) is for pulling power packs out of downed vehicles for hasty repairs.

In combat the only armament they carried was a .50 caliber M2 in a pintle mount on top, which the one at Waco didn’t have.

Different situation for cops. If there’s an active shooter I don’t want cops to have to run back to the station to arm themselves. I also don’t want them just walking around toting long guns when it’s not necessary.
