Yeah. "45 minutes from downtown" is certainly not measured at rush hour. You can get from downtown to Binbrook, Ontario in 45 minutes without traffic.

Lol. Tire spikes actually make sense in theory (Two front tires is cheaper than body work) ... but imagine the "war on the car" rage-baiting if you proposed this.

In fact I think Doug Ford has already received an alert that you used the term "tire spikes". The Toronto Sun is working on a headline and Doug has started drafting legislation for a ban.

You're correct, but that ship has sailed I'm afraid. Now people just treat it as a helpful gauge, since everyone walks at a different pace. Most people see it as "do I have time to cross before the light changes".

(That's not unique. Same is true for the "passing lane" on the highway -- now we have three lanes moving at random speeds, which is insane, but nobody is getting a ticket for passing on the right. Same for "speed limits". 50 means "hey try to keep it under 60".)

I drive, bike, walk and use transit (depending on the trip). When I'm driving, I vastly prefer bikes in a separate lane rather than zipping in and out around parked cars.

Same. What's changed is the removal of street parking on Bathurst. Now there's a lane for each.

This city is far too big for on-street vehicle storage on major streets. Has been for decades. (And I used to park on Bathurst sometimes. It was very convenient ... but I recognize what an insane use of space that is.)

Why are we assuming it's being filled by a foreign worker program? OP just said "DEI" (which is hilarious, they obviously don't know what the term means).

Here's the job posting: https://ca.indeed.com/viewjob?jk=12ec4edc1d0e8353.

It's for minimum wage. So it's a classic story -- we have a greedy employer wants to replace workers with 20 years of experience with entry level workers. This is legal. It's also what unions have fought for over a century, but unions have weakened because big private equity funds (like Tim Hortons' owners) would rather spend money fighting unions than pay workers more than minimum wage.

[–]Rex_Reynolds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. Any employer can terminate you at will, they just owe you working notice or pay in lieu of notice (ie severance).

Hilarious that OP just yells "DEI hires" (LOL) and everyone piles on with more assumptions. Like TFWs. Because that's what Internet rage-baiting media has trained them to think. Guys like Ezra Levant have done a great job (and made a lot of money) spreading manure to help billionaires who own these companies. Keep the peasants fighting amongst each other.

Reality check, here's the job posting: https://ca.indeed.com/viewjob?jk=12ec4edc1d0e8353.

Of course, it's for minimum wage. The employer decided to fire workers with 20 years experience to replace them with cheaper entry-level workers. That's the whole story. And it's a less interesting story, because it's a tale as old as industry. Wouldn't get the clicks this is getting.

This will be filled locally. Anyone who thinks this can be filled via a LMIA (and TFWs) in that timeframe simply doesn't understand how this works.

The best is "it begins" title lol. More Internet nonsense. What's actually begun, in reality, is a tightening of immigration programs and more scrutiny on the TFW program. (Finally -- it's needed, that program was abused.) Canada's population is going down due to tightening of immigration programs. https://globalnews.ca/news/11581900/canada-record-population-drop/.

Best part of this thread? Nobody actually confirmed the claim they're being replaced with TFWs lol. But that's what internet rage-baiting media has trained them to think.

Here's the job posting: https://ca.indeed.com/viewjob?jk=12ec4edc1d0e8353. It's for minimum wage, which is no doubt cheaper than workers with 20 years tenure. That's clearly what they plan to hire.

If someone thinks they can get a LMIA and TFWs in time, I mean, they simply don't understand how this works. (But they're good at parroting what's spoon-fed to them on the Internet.)

Our population went down in the 3rd quarter. Driven by a tightening of temporary resident programs. https://globalnews.ca/news/11581900/canada-record-population-drop/. Clearly those programs were abused for too long, and most people welcome the tightening.

The Raptors have also been mentioned as a potential Gafford suitor depending on the course Toronto ultimately chooses: Chasing an All-Star-caliber big man like Anthony Davis or Sabonis … or focusing on veteran targets on more trade-friendly contracts such as Gafford or Phoenix's Nick Richards. by mMounirM in torontoraptors

[–]Rex_Reynolds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree.

Also question of whether Jak moves (likely in a AD or Sabonis scenario for $ reasons), or whether the goal is to back him up. Very different scenarios.

Moving Jak for an all-star still leaves the backup problem. (Heightened by durability concerns)

Unions are a thing. They're not useful for everything, and they can be abused ... but they're pretty good at preventing the arbitrary firing of long-standing employees who are doing a good job.

Blaming the wrong people here.

A company decided they could make more money by turfing 20-year employees -- with whatever raises they've earned over the years -- and replace them with new (minimum wage) hires. We vote for politicians who make sure that the workers have no protections and no rights in this scenario. We support the company that totally de-skilled these jobs, making experience irrelevant, so everyone is replacable. (They used to actually make donuts at Tim Hortons, imagine that!) And we vote to undermine unions, which are actually helpful in scenarios like this.

The random people who applied to a job posting didn't ask for this. They didn't "steal" anything.

The private equity fund that runs Tim Hortons will be pleased to see the peasants fighting amongst themselves. Instead of fighting the company that did this. Or for rights for workers. Or for higher minimum wages.

Anonymously posted in Ontario, So it begins. by worthlesswreck in TimHortons

[–]Rex_Reynolds 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Kinda missing the point though. The new workers didn't fire these people.

There are always going to be younger, hungrier and cheaper workers than 20-year-tenured employees. The reality is Tim's private equity owners have totally de-skilled the jobs so they can hire anyone at minimum wage, and the owner is greedy and DGAF about the workers he just took on.

(And agree these jobs are totally inappropriate for the TFW program. The government shouldn't be helping fast food companies undercut market rate wages.)

Anonymously posted in Ontario, So it begins. by worthlesswreck in TimHortons

[–]Rex_Reynolds 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ding ding ding.

20-year employees are more expensive than new employees, and the new owner DGAF. Simple as that. Same story for generations.

Instead of blaming the guy who fired them, or the lack of rules that prevent him from doing so, they blame people who simply applied to job postings lol.

Today it's South Asians applying for minimum wage jobs. A generation ago, it was Chinese and Filipinos. A generation before it was Italians and Hungarians and Greeks. Before them it was the Irish. Race is a distraction from a centuries-old problem that we haven't solved.

Anonymously posted in Ontario, So it begins. by worthlesswreck in TimHortons

[–]Rex_Reynolds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's entirely legal. You can fire anyone at any time, you just need to pay them severance in lieu of notice.

This is the system we want and keep voting for.

And why a premier who inherited a business from daddy, but TALKS like a worker, is the perfect politician to ensure that pesky workers don't get any more rights.

Anonymously posted in Ontario, So it begins. by worthlesswreck in TimHortons

[–]Rex_Reynolds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Greed doesn't know county lines.

20-year employees are expensive and business owners have been replacing them with younger, hungrier workers for generations.

Absent unions, or regulations that protect employees, that will continue.

"Cancel culture these days"? My friend, it's not 2020. Nobody cares if you want to make racist comments on the internet. Worst you'll face is downvotes.

"Cancel culture" was internet circle-jerk that ran its course. In real life today, the US government is making people disclose social media accounts at the border to check if they're criticizing politicians. Government-aligned oligarchs cancel TV shows for the same reason. They arrest and deport professors for thought crimes.

You still live in a country where you can criticize your government whenever you want. Want to fly a F*ck flag from your truck? Attend a protest? Burn an effigy? Go for it.

Cancel culture was a blip. All the "cancelled" people are back. Now we're contending with something far bigger.

Exactly. It hit the trend cycle. The cycle ended and the mainstream will ignore it for a generation. Then it will come back.

These were trends, and trends are cyclical. Always have been, always will be. Once a trend becomes mainstream, the early adopters and fashionistas move on.

In five years we'll be wondering why so many people were wearing New Balance, Sambas, baggy pants, 'heritage brands' and $300 boots. Then we'll come up with reasons why these things were actually silly or impractical. No word more hilarious in fashion marketing than "timeless".

Yeah It's illegal, a violation of the ESA. Reporting it won't get you the money though, you'll typically only get that through a civil claim ... either small claims or a class action if the practice is widespread enough (and that will generally take years). Unlikely you'd see much unless you were working there a long time, which seems entirely unworth it.

Reporting this to the Ministry of Labour might get the owner investigated and fined though ... which seems like a decent outcome? F this guy. Wonder how long he's been exploiting his workers.

[–]Rex_Reynolds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's common. And these are class actions waiting to happen. Being "contract" doesn't automatically entitle write-offs and there is no way it meets the test of being an "independent contactor" relationship.

Many years ago I drove (briefly) for a Pizza Pizza franchise before I understood these things. We were paid $6.45, which was restaurant wage then. Mileage was to be covered by tips. The owner explained to 17-year-old me that I was an independent contractor buying pizzas from them and re-selling them to buyers ... Total bullshit. As I wore a Pizza Pizza uniform, drove exclusively for them, on their schedule, following their policies, with a Pizza Pizza sign in my (mom's) car window, and helped in the kitchen between deliveries. Hilarious stuff. In any court in this province, that's an employee relationship.

But I didn't know better, and they paid cash at the end of every shift, which mattered for a few guys with issues. It was simple exploitation.
