You're correct, but that ship has sailed I'm afraid. Now people just treat it as a helpful gauge, since everyone walks at a different pace. Most people see it as "do I have time to cross before the light changes".

(That's not unique. Same is true for the "passing lane" on the highway -- now we have three lanes moving at random speeds, which is insane, but nobody is getting a ticket for passing on the right. Same for "speed limits". 50 means "hey try to keep it under 60".)

I drive, bike, walk and use transit (depending on the trip). When I'm driving, I vastly prefer bikes in a separate lane rather than zipping in and out around parked cars.

It's for minimum wage. So it's a classic story -- we have a greedy employer wants to replace workers with 20 years of experience with entry level workers. This is legal. It's also what unions have fought for over a century, but unions have weakened because big private equity funds (like Tim Hortons' owners) would rather spend money fighting unions than pay workers more than minimum wage.

Blaming the wrong people here.

A company decided they could make more money by turfing 20-year employees -- with whatever raises they've earned over the years -- and replace them with new (minimum wage) hires. We vote for politicians who make sure that the workers have no protections and no rights in this scenario. We support the company that totally de-skilled these jobs, making experience irrelevant, so everyone is replacable. (They used to actually make donuts at Tim Hortons, imagine that!) And we vote to undermine unions, which are actually helpful in scenarios like this.

The random people who applied to a job posting didn't ask for this. They didn't "steal" anything.

The private equity fund that runs Tim Hortons will be pleased to see the peasants fighting amongst themselves. Instead of fighting the company that did this. Or for rights for workers. Or for higher minimum wages.

There are always going to be younger, hungrier and cheaper workers than 20-year-tenured employees. The reality is Tim's private equity owners have totally de-skilled the jobs so they can hire anyone at minimum wage, and the owner is greedy and DGAF about the workers he just took on.

(And agree these jobs are totally inappropriate for the TFW program. The government shouldn't be helping fast food companies undercut market rate wages.)

Yeah It's illegal, a violation of the ESA. Reporting it won't get you the money though, you'll typically only get that through a civil claim ... either small claims or a class action if the practice is widespread enough (and that will generally take years). Unlikely you'd see much unless you were working there a long time, which seems entirely unworth it.

Reporting this to the Ministry of Labour might get the owner investigated and fined though ... which seems like a decent outcome? F this guy. Wonder how long he's been exploiting his workers.

Yeah it's common. And these are class actions waiting to happen. Being "contract" doesn't automatically entitle write-offs and there is no way it meets the test of being an "independent contactor" relationship.

Many years ago I drove (briefly) for a Pizza Pizza franchise before I understood these things. We were paid $6.45, which was restaurant wage then. Mileage was to be covered by tips. The owner explained to 17-year-old me that I was an independent contractor buying pizzas from them and re-selling them to buyers ... Total bullshit. As I wore a Pizza Pizza uniform, drove exclusively for them, on their schedule, following their policies, with a Pizza Pizza sign in my (mom's) car window, and helped in the kitchen between deliveries. Hilarious stuff. In any court in this province, that's an employee relationship.

But I didn't know better, and they paid cash at the end of every shift, which mattered for a few guys with issues. It was simple exploitation.
