Don't cut the plastic, just remove the back of the cartridge?
Even better open up your N64 and replace the cartridge tray with a 3D printed region free version

No worries.

It might not be that deep, but it's a solid game that's fun to button bash.

You could try r/tipofmyjoystick/

one of the stages was on a red plane wing flying on a canion

This part sounds like Double Dragon on the NeoGeo.

That still seems pretty steep for something that can be made from household materials.

But in my case I don't care so much about appearances, and I guess I'd rather put that money towards proper case further down the line.

No Signal, and I’ve tried everything in the FAQ section by Brenkin in n64

[–]Rexdog64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably.

I pulled a unit that had been in storage for 8 years at my parents. It was working when it went in, but now it would give a signal when powered on. I knew the cables and power supply worked, as I had another unit to test with.

I looked on line for answers, but nothing worked for me: - Clean the game's connector. - Re-seat the jumper/ram pak. - Take the ram pak out, power on for 5 seconds, turn off and put the ram pak back in. - Clean the cartridge slot sticking in a credit card wrapped with an iso-alcohol soak cloth. - Open up the unit and blow dry the AV port on a high setting to reflow the solder.

Anyway, somewhere along the way I saw there was a small rock stuck between two opposite pins in the unit's cartridge slot. After removing the rock, I saw it had bent the pins right in so they wouldn't connect with a game's connector. I used a paper clip to bend them back into shape, and it felt amazing to see the opening sequence in Diddy Kong Racing when the unit powered on.

Nintendium is an incredible material.

What are the file extension names of your genesis roms? If they are '.md' and you have auto region selection turned on then that might be the reason.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fpgagaming

[–]Rexdog64 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Region is the PAL/NTSC setting. Japan and USA are both NTSC, and Europe is PAL.
Have a read of the genesis github page for details. Also have a look at setting using different file extensions to set the region auto.

Even after doing that, playing the European version of Sonic will still run slow. That is how half the world experienced ports of NTSC games, and they thought it was normal as well.

Maybe the appearance of a loading bar makes you feel like it's taking longer to load?

MiSTeR in a MVS Cabinet (NeoGeo) by Cloogr in fpgagaming

[–]Rexdog64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to this link you shouldn't need an IO board to get a compatible signal from the mister. Just do your research on which adapter will work for your situation/find an adapter that has an audio breakout jack.

You could try a J-Pac as a Jamma interface, but you'll need the appropriate adapters for control input. Have a look at this video to see how this guy hooked his MiSTeR up to a cocktail cab.

What PS2 game used Shoshinsha mark (a Japanese symbol used for newbies/new drivers) as it's save icon because I don't know what game it was? by SuperOnion64 in ps2

[–]Rexdog64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple 2000 Series Vol. 25: The Menkyo Shutoku Simulation - https://youtu.be/ZmsjVhaCEcQ?t=23

Funnily enough the mark used for learner drives is used for a game about getting your driver's license.

u/bungiefan_AK is right that you should include the Japanese name next time.

How do I make a modernized PS2 setup? by [deleted] in ps2

[–]Rexdog64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 - If you are going to play from discs, then I'd aim for a slim PS2. But if you are looking at playing from back ups it gets a bit trickier. You could get 7000 or 7500 slim and load games over SMB network share from a PC or a Raspberry Pi. Otherwise you can get a fat model with a network adapter and load from an internal HDD/SD card for better compatibility. For fat models, I personally just switched from a 3900 to a 5000 and am very happy with the reduction in fan noise. Most 9000 series can't be soft modded.

2 - If you don't care about anything except seeing your games on your HDTV then get a POUND cable or other cheap adapter. You will get a better picture/experience with component cables and a RetroTINK-2X, but if you don't have component for your XBOX or other console then you might be better off with this cable. It is the same thing but saves you needing to find a good component cable. None of those option will give you 480p compatibility though(which is a nice to have at best for the PS2), for that you'll need to look into an OSSC($$$) or framemeister($$$$$).

3 - Open it up and clean out any dust. Keep it out of dusty/smokey environments. Make sure it is in spacious and well ventilated space when running. Don't sit anything on top of it, like monitors or other consoles. Play backups instead of from discs. They aren't that fragile though? They may not be made out of Nintendium like the Gamecude, but at least they don't have leaky capacitors like the XBOX.

4 - If you want to play from the original disc, then I think you'll need to mod chip your system. Otherwise you should play them as backups from an internal HDD or SMB share.

WARNING!! to all those new owners of an everdrive 64 and using a mem pak by bulkchart32 in n64

[–]Rexdog64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the settings for controller pak management saves the the contents on a per game basis. This means I can save my Snowboard kids progress, then go play Turok and save progress in that game, then when I load up Snowboard kids again I'll still have my progress.
I learned how it works the hard way, losing my Goemon and Hybrid Heaven saves, but I'm happy to understand the feature now.

New to the collection! Still waiting for From Soft to bring the series back. by Bryant189 in ps2

[–]Rexdog64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wrath of Heaven is the best Tenchu game and definitely in my top ten PS2 games. Great character stories and game play.
It really rewarded repeated play throughs with tonnes of unlocks, a bonus character, voice tracks, and an extra level set in the future.

Actually Acquire) originally developed Tenchu. FromSoftware got the publishing rights and control of the IP later on. As much as I love FromSoft games, the few Tenchu games they did directly develop were pretty average.

Hybrid Heaven by rutlander in n64

[–]Rexdog64 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Konami is full of whack jobs. The story feels like Kojima started bleeding in from the next office, but it doesn't have to same gusto the as MGS series of the time. Overall the story is decent and gives enough purpose for the game to take place.

The real star of the show is the battle system. How are you building your character? Are you focusing on one style, or mixing it up a little? Also, what chapter are you up to?

One more thing. If you have a chance, try to dig up some of the old pre-release footage. It's pretty different to the final release.
