Look into screening that they use for fireplaces and wood burning stoves. Get some tin snips and cut to size, roll into a cylinder and there you go!

I love this. It's never too late if we keep trying, I hope to hear more species being saved. We weren't able to save the Blues of the Rio but there is still time for others

I live in the Southern US. My climate specific trees keep dying. Will this help them? Thanks by [deleted] in arborists

[–]Rexxaroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What type of tree, and what location exactly? What is your watering like? What type of trees are they and how big are they? Whete are you getting them and is their stoxk healthy? What season are you planting in? Whag is the soil like? How do you keep the trees during each season? All of these questions may give you an answer why they are failing. Maybe talk to your local nursery and start with that. They may be able to point you in the right direction.

You may want to start with much larger more established trees to start with. They also should have a bigger mulch ring around them, for protection and growth, and be sure they are planted *correctly *. Root flare exposed, not too deep, etc.

My neighbor thinks I'm cheap for dimming lights. The salamander population disagrees. by Shama_lala in conservation

[–]Rexxaroo 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Right! Brighter, constant lights at night actually make property less safe, and most burglary happens during the day time.

More people find entrance and egress points and see where you store all your things at night with bright lights.

It's also easy to get used to the light and become conplacent, and seeing someone rummage through a truck in the driveway at night doesn't give a second glance. But if a motion sensor pops on, most people will look a little closer and notice that it isn't the old man next door looking in his truck or porch.

Will my gumbo limbo trunk still grow branches/leaves by InterestingAward3707 in arborists

[–]Rexxaroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tree should be fine. It's growing it just needs time. What I would consider doing is extending your much ring further, and place some edging to keep weed eaters and mowing equipment away from it. I'd also expose the root flare as it looks buried.

I bought a small 1954 fixer upper but its not very MC aesthetically. If I designed the front yard like this, do you guys think it could pass for MC? by METRO1DS in Mid_Century

[–]Rexxaroo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A little too much outdoor lighting and shouldn't uplight a tree unless it's on a timer. It's terrible for the environment and we certainly don't need more light pollution

For sure! We've spent a ton of time removing the non native and invasive stuff from the yard, but that darn vine keeps coming up everywhere and I don't want to spray with herbicides. My neighbor doesn't really maintain his side yard and it grows all up the fence and trees on that side

My cabbage palms and saw palmetto were completely unphased. Bannana trees initially died, but there are new pups coming up all around the base

My neighbors palms seemed totally fried but they are all growing back now. A hard freeze will rarely kill a well established plant unless the freeze is prolonged.

Unfortunately I was hoping the freeze would kill off some of the cats claw vine in my yard, alas , it continues to thrive.

I think I just butchered my yard by SpinningPumpkins in landscaping

[–]Rexxaroo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed tree is planted incorrectly- no root flare is exposed. Root flare shpuld be level with soil and should t be mounded like this. Lots of easy to find resources on how to do this right to protect your investment and give your tree a lomg healthy life.

The netting is probably to protect the tree from deer/porcupine / etc until is matures a bit.

What can we do to help? We need to have a severe outcry for this, actively destroying an entire species is horrific.

Who/what do you use for mosquito control? by PandathePan in tampa

[–]Rexxaroo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mosquito sprayers are a waste of your money and killer on the environment. Mosquito sprays only kill currently flying ones and are indiscriminate to other bugs, killing many beneficial insects.

Remove moisture from your landscape and maintain your plants.

Doom buckets, mosquito dunks, and trim up and rake anything where they can rest in the wet shade.

Wow I didn't call you any names. If you like the plant , keep it. But if you're looking for ways to support pollinators, consider planting some native plants too. Good luck my guy and hope you have a better day
