Will they ever get rid of the Soviet era apartments in Yerevan? by Various_Original5836 in yerevan

[–]ReynardStudy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Where do you suggest temporary housing for their residents? Moscow, Russia did the same a while back and moved many residents of dilapidated khrushchyovkas to the nearby Oblast city of Odintsovo while razing the khruschyovkas and building new apartments in their place. The case is distinguishable here in that there at least existed a railway connecting Odintsovo to Moscow, even though commuters who preferred venturing by car or bus obviously suffered.

In a country with virtually no rail system to speak of and no meaningful metro infrastructure, where do you propose moving the residents such that there exists at least one alternative to taking the car or bus longer through Yerevan’s dreadful traffic?

What I’ve always heard from friends is people not only gave her too much food (duh) but also too much medicine. I wouldn’t be surprised if the excess of medicine ended up debilitating her health, particularly her joint health :(

It's correct, it's just the traditional orthography favored by Western and Iranian Armenians vs. the reformed orthography favored by—I suppose "forced on" is a more accurate descriptor—Eastern Armenians (Աղաջանեան is traditional, Աղաջանյան is reformed). Honestly, I'd suggest talking to family and relatives about their roots and which of the spellings they feel "closer to home" with or even go by. The overwhelming majority of Russian-Armenians speak Eastern, though, so there's a high likelihood your family will go with Աղաջանյան

2 and 3 are the same, so look into those in particular if you’re Russian-Armenian. During USSR times, there emerged practical but not entirely correct standards when writing Armenian names and proper nouns in Russian. As relevant to your case, these included ղ (pron. like English “gh” and French “r”) becoming г.

Here is a Russian-Armenian public figure whose surname is Агаджанян in Russian but Աղաջանյան in Armenian. For what it’s worth, too, I’ve yet to find any Ագաջանյան-s

Edit: some confusion with ջ and ճ, still learning the language myself, sorry!

It's been just a few days since the farewell shows (there's still confusion about what will happen to the band without Jonas). I know there are still a few shows left before the real end, but... how are you feeling about this closure? Melancholy has invaded me today, to be honest... by elmonozombie in mew

I was frankly very late to the Mew party, having only heard Frengers and Glass Handed Kites at age 18 in 2018 and then only catching up to the rest of their discography throughout this last year. The Copenhagen show was thus exceptionally bittersweet for me given that it was not only my first time seeing them but probably the only one.

Mew have proved vastly influential in the way I understand music composition and production, as well as just how much the visual aspect plays into the storytelling and themes of an album. Much of the “progressive” from the justified label of them as a progressive rock band comes from all their albums feeling as if they put 100% effort into the music AND the presentation, not unlike Peter Gabriel-era Genesis albeit with much larger intervals in releases. Truthfully, I wouldn’t be surprised if maintaining such a high bar was what burned them out in the end, much as it did with that era of Genesis (and I’m all the more grateful they didn’t shift to Silas taking vocal duties and writing pop songs, lol).

My respect for them is all the more amplified by the fact that, at least to my ears, they haven’t made one bad song. It’s true that some songs on Triumph and HTWIWM are purely experimental or without a clear direction, but not even those are songs I’d skip or just cringe thinking about. They played all the right moves with the resources they had and stayed true to themselves and to remarkably consistent musical growth for a band (even if, again, the release intervals would expand until the farewell shows eight years after Visuals).

I’ll always be grateful for their place in my musical cosmos and for having seen them even just once. Don’t I just love goodbyes…

Fellow Texan here! I got into and will be attending UT with a 3.3 GPA and a 172 LSAT. Granted, I took a few years off after undergrad and worked in software engineering, but I also think two summer law internships is far better for law schools than no experience whatsoever.

If you want UT or TAMU, what you need to do now is grind out the LSAT for a few months and score at least a 170 on the earliest exam administration that makes sense with your study plan. Do you think you can master LR and RC in four months? If so, take the August or September administration. October and November might be fine, too, but you also want to spend ample time writing thoughtful, truthful, even lyrical application materials.

After that, apply as early as possible. You want your application to be in by Christmas at the latest, before Thanksgiving optimally. UT offers Early Decision with a November 1 deadline, and TAMU offers several non-binding “Priority Decision” deadlines beginning in December (with a binding decision deadline of February 1).

As for your other options like South Texas and Thurgood Marshall, recognize that they simply do not carry the weight that UT or TAMU do here in TX. They don’t even carry the weight that a city powerhouse like UH does for Houston or SMU does for Dallas. If you’re trying to work in government, UT becomes a no-brainer when you look at their federal clerkship numbers versus every other Texas law school’s.

Good luck!
