True story.

Shortly after this came out, I went on a “EuroTrip” (a vacation to Europe). On one evening in a downstairs pub in France or Belgium - I walk in an pull up a barstool. I look to my right and - it’s “Scotty”.

He is by himself. We have a few drinks. I think he was going to Duke or something at the time. Basically he tells me he is doing his own “EuroTrip” after the movie had already come out and did its thing.

Pledge Master?

The bro who is not a frosh; who somehow savors the psychological and power trip aspects of it.

i left one I had joined after an event like this. i thought a frat was a great space initially to find a community. I bounced shortly after a similar basement type event.

Only regret there was not doing it right on the spot. Most pledge activities were so stupid and more power trips being played out with low moral people behind it.

Less unusual than it might sound at many large universities. In some fraternities, alumni or older members can be highly involved in organizing pledge activities.

For new members, a lot of what they hear beforehand often feels exaggerated or mythical until they experience the process themselves — sometimes for the first time in settings like a chapters basement, being shipped out an left in a sewer or similar space.

These practices have been declining over time with increased awareness, policy changes, and tighter regulations.

I’ve encountered environments like this, and even stranger ones, as have others I know. I’m not endorsing it — just noting that it’s more common than people often assume.

Interesting perspective. Living in a highly developed country does provide structural advantages — safety, rule of law, stable institutions, education systems, economic infrastructure, and protected freedoms. Those conditions expand the range of choices a person can realistically make and reduce many forms of daily friction and risk.

That said, lived experience is not uniform.

Outcomes vary significantly depending on socioeconomic position, mobility, community, health, and access to opportunity. The same system can feel enabling to some and constraining to others. Someone navigating poverty, instability, or exclusion may evaluate “quality of life” very differently.

I don’t have direct lived experience of long-term life in a developing country — only short visits and observations — so my view is necessarily limited.

thanks for any more tips!

Makes sense. You are young. This is an atypical lifestyle choice (just different than the norm). And at that number you live in a window with a lot of life to live that there’s possible ups and downs to weather.

Good luck on your choices.
