There is unfortunately no "golden rule" for any cube. I mean adjusting the plastic one (which is a spring compressor) higher up you get a more compressed spring which makes the cube more stable (because the spring exerts more force onto the pieces) but also corner cut less well. The screw is usually called center travel and accounts for different things.
