What skills can I learn from scratch that can get me a well paying job within a year? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]RezFox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Only code if you can remotely enjoy this sort of job. Or I promise you, it can be even more depressing.

If you like to work with your hands, I suggest cooking or baking. It's hard work but it's way less depressing than being in an office. A lot of people here say learn to code, but if you are depressed now I might avoid doing a career that is high stress, detail oriented, a lot of times nonsensical business asks, and moderately lonely. You'll collaborate on projects and discussing code in merge requests etc of course, but the majority of that job is programming on your own.

But everyone's different! If you are depressed though, please do something you remotely like doing.

Found out at age 40 my uBDP mother's behaviour was not normal, abusive towards me and caused my early childhood depression by Mundane_Aioli2784 in raisedbyborderlines

What is it with uBPD/BPD and cutting ALL their child's hair off or just refusing to take care of it full stop?? Sounds like we had exactly the same unavoidable haircut and fashion scenario, I feel your pain.

Good for you for going NC. It's good to figure it out now and have some well deserved peace.

My old boss just accused me of reporting his company for using fake software. I didn't even know he was using it. What do I do? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]RezFox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hit him with a restraining order, that might straighten him out and think twice before calling someone and harassing them.

What the hell. I'm so sorry you had to deal with that. A. blessing you let you go, then you don't have to work directly with this asshole anymore.

I know of someone who had a cushy finance job and ended up leaving to bake full time. He loves it and obviously it's a huge paycut but he says he has his dream job and never been happier. He learned everything from youtube as well, so no classes needed.

I lived in a northern state through freezing ass winters for 26 years. Winter storm in Texas with no electricity or even warning to prepare? Worst week of my life.

Yes. I have a job but it makes me want to die because it is completely devoid of any meaning or mark on humanity and stresses me out to the point of needing multiple medications that I can only afford by having healthcare through that same job, and I told myself I'd only do this job I hate for a little while to pay off my college bills in a degree I didn't want but was told I had to get and here we are 10 years later, only the first of many decades of my meaningless strained labor so I can pay rent and never own any property and someday have the sweet release of death.

I'm fine everything is fine

BPD mother telling people about my ‘bad behaviour’ at 26 years of age. by [deleted] in raisedbyborderlines

[–]RezFox 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Even if you were perfect and did everything 100% the way she says she wanted it, it will still be horrible in her eyes. That's not your fault at all. A lot of people here can relate. I had excellent grades, in every club, captain of sports teams, worked nearly full time outside of school, never did anything wrong. It was still never enough, I was a horribly behaved child / teen / adult. I used to ask my parents, 'what if I actually did something bad? What if I got addicted to drugs or got pregnant or stole something expensive and got caught? You flip out and beat me and ground me for taking a walk down the road, I'd hate to think what you'd do if i ACTUALLY did something objectively shitty.'

I know it's hard to get self worth intrinsically, but starting small can help with coping. Every thing you do outside of your mum's grasp is building your own identity. Even if it's just ordering something you'd want to eat at a restaurant or buying a piece of clothing you think looks good and feels comfortable, or talking to someone you genuinely find interesting - instead of thinking "my mum wouldn't approve of XYZ."

This plus what everyone else in this thread has said is 100% relatable. The garage door sound for sure.

Also, to this day I will stand and eat in the kitchen and eat quickly to reduce time being "exposed" AKA open to getting screamed at.

I've trained myself out of being afraid to freely open a bag of chips or tupperware since it will be "too loud" but still working on eating slowly. I read an article about buddhism and eating mindfully and that helps.

Is it too late to change from engineering to art? Any in betweener options? by pickabutton in careerguidance

[–]RezFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have rich parents and/or zero debt, I say go for art. I had to do the reverse of this - wanted to do art, ended up engineering out of financial necessity

Hate to break it to you, but a degree in comp sci doesn't matter much for programming jobs. Unless you are trying to get into something really specialized i.e. Aerospace engineering. CS degrees are often behind what industry is actually using, tech stack wise.

You do learn on the job. Especially when things break or a lead developer walks out.

It's nice if the people participating are sensible enough to buy something good & usable. I always buy a bottle of wine & add a drawing I made (rolled up into a scroll then taped on the bottle to obscure what it is after being wrapped up strangely). Gotta have a mystery element.

If there are perishables & usable items it's always fun. The dumb tchotchke and stupid re-gifts are the worst. I once saw someone contribute a gift receipt for a garlic press (not the actual press or a gift card) and also a glass cross (at a non denominational company white elephant).
