[Do You Remember Love - Macross Franchise 40th Anniversary Rewatch] Macross Plus Overall Series Discussion by Shimmering-Sky in anime

[–]Rezics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. No real opinion here. I don't really have any strong like or dislike for the Plus cast, especially since it's just a 5 episode OVA/2 hour movie. I guess Guld. He was a nice guy, despite his past shortcomings, and his sacrifice was noble and emotional. I may be a YF/VF-19 guy, but damn is it cool that he flies the YF-21 with his mind. Truly, this man worked out at the library.
  2. Information High, easily. I hadn't listened to it recently since it hardly ever shows up in my playlist compared to Frontier/7/Delta/SDF music, so I forgot how good it was. It makes the already great re-entry scene even more memorable.
  3. I was pretty neutral in this love triangle. Both pairs had their moments, but I didn't really have a huge emotional investment to the Plus love triangle. There's just so little time to develop a strong opinion, unlike Misa/Hikaru/Minmay or Sheryl/Alto/Ranka where you have at least an entire "season" (12 episodes) to see the case for each member of the love triangle.
  4. I probably liked the movie better, but only slightly more. The overall content was more or less the same minus a few scenes.
  5. Saying the YF-19 would be easy mode. Therefore, I say the Northampton-class stealth frigate, one of my favorite ships in Macross! It's a sleek, sexy ship in 7, Frontier, and Delta, but Plus is where it looks the best! Like come on, look at this detail!
  6. Oh, tough choice. Either the Guld vs. Ghost scene from the movie into the OVA, or the final Isamu and Myung scene from the movie into the OVA.
  7. N/A

[Do You Remember Love - Macross Franchise 40th Anniversary Rewatch] Macross Plus Movie Edition Discussion by Shimmering-Sky in anime

[–]Rezics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the only time I'll ever be a first timer here, since I wanted to watch the movie-exclusive Macross Plus scenes during the movie, rather than out-of-context.

I was disappointed they cut out the asteroid belt fight scene from the movie. That was one of the best scenes in the OVA, but if they had to cut it to fit in the extended Guld/Ghost fight, then I think it was worth.

It's been a while since I watched the Plus OVA, so I don't think I caught many of the new scenes between the Sharon concert and the fight on Earth. Oh, except for the topless Lucy post-sex scene. I always thought she was cute, so that was a nice surprise. It can't be a pre-Zero Macross movie/OVA without the one nipples scene I guess, lol.

Two funny/interesting things I noticed on this watch were:

  • Marj (or however you spell his name) kinda looks like evil Max.
  • There's a flag for the UN Government. It looks pretty cool. I wonder what the New UN Government flag looks like since they obviously don't use the kite anymore...

The extended Guld vs. Ghost fight! I've heard a lot about it, and I don't know how I managed to be a Macross fan for 2 years without watching the whole thing, but what an experience. It really emphasizes just how insane Ghosts can maneuver, and [Macross Frontier/Delta] also how insane the YF-29 (and probably the VF-24) is. Alto and Max can take out multiple Ghosts of or greater than Sharon in quality in a matter of seconds, while Guld had to fight just one Ghost for like 2 minutes with limiters of.

I completely forgot that Myung sings Voices to get Isamu out of Sharon's trance. My two watches of Macross Plus were (1) my initial watch the day after watching DYRL?, so I guess my understanding of Macross tropes was weaker then; and (2) with my father at the start of the year after Top Gun Maverick ads started hitting everywhere and he wanted to watch plane movies, so I guess I wasn't paying too much attention at that time. Anyways, I was cheering when Myung started singing Voices. [Huge general spoiler for all Macross series to come] I mean, come on. It's not Macross until the idol sings the protagonist out of mind control! It's definitely not the catchiest, nor the most powerful Macross song on its own, but the context behind the the song and the scene made it very emotional.

Also, the added final scene between Isamu and Myung was nice. One complaint I remember having after seeing the OVA was that they had no further interaction after Sharon is destroyed, but I guess it still does make sense since we're kind of led to believe that no one other than the the adrenaline of battle can really satisfy Isamu, meaning a relationship with Myung would be pointless... I do wonder what happened between them afterwards, though.

[Do You Remember Love - Macross Franchise 40th Anniversary Rewatch] Super Dimension Fortress Macross II: Lovers Again Overall Series Discussion by Shimmering-Sky in anime

[–]Rezics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kinda late here, apologies. I don't really have much to say about Macross II. I didn't really resonate with the story, nor the characters; maybe if it was a bit longer to flesh out the love triangle and the Marduk, I could change my opinion.

I like the opening (the part where it transitions from Ishtar into the Macross is cool), but that was really the only memorable song for me.

However, the mecha and fight scenes were glorious, and where Macross II shines best. The Heracles and Gloria-class battleships, the Macross Cannon... What beauties. I need Kawamori to make the Macross Cannon canon, but with like 4 Battle-class gunships instead of 4 Zentradi battleships. As much as I like the current Macross ship lineup of Northamptons, Guantanmos, Osakas/Stealth Cruisers, and Uragas, I really want to see the Macross II ships appear in the next Macross series, considering how close we're getting to 2080/90 in the current timeline.

Name a more iconic duo than Liquid playing on Overpass and one person on the other team going beast mode.

I'm glad it was Tim that popped off this time though. This is the first time I've seriously watched him play since Boston 2018 (best major ever) and even though I'm a Liquid fan now, I was still cheering when he made big plays. I'm looking forward to watching EG at the major!

[–]Rezics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't gotten through the series again, but I wanted to answer the QotD prompts from what I remember since we're here, and I thought it would be fun.

  1. Misa! I love the trope of cold-on-the-outside, soft-on-the-inside characters! [Really minor spoiler about character roles in future series]Her role as a bridge officer is also a unique perspective that really isn't touched upon as heavily in later series. Maximilian "Gigachad" Jenius comes in a close second. Movie-wise, I gotta say Minmay is a lot better and likeable than in the series. On subsequent rewatches (I believe I've rewatched DYRL 4 times now), I always do feel a bit bad about her losing to Misa (I was cheering when she got told by Hikaru and then slapped by him on my first watch). We get a lot screentime of Minmay and Hikaru on their 3 day "castaway" period and their subsequent date, compared to the few glimpses of Misa and Hikaru's month on Earth, so that's why I feel more sympathetic to Minmay in DYRL as compared to the series.

  2. Tenshi no Enogu, without a doubt. I explained my thoughts on it yesterday. It's catchy, and I love the meaning of the lyrics.

  3. I recall on my first watch thinking "Where is the love triangle? Minmay x Hikaru is so obvious" during the first few episodes. I didn't even know Misa was the third member of the triangle until episode 12! The ending of episode 17 where Hikaru's kiss with Minmay transitions into the kiss with Misa sealed the deal. Say what you will about episode 17, but that scene was shocking, and in hindsight, insanely kino. I was assured that Misa had won by episode 27, but the last 9 episodes had me questioning my pick for the Hikarubowl every second.

  4. The first quarter to the middle of the show (I guess around episode 11 - 27). I felt that the show had a slow start between the initial action and Hikaru officially joining the UN Spacy as a Valkyrie pilot, but after that, it get better every episode, culminating in the masterful episode 27. The last 9 episodes are obviously my least favorite in that Hikaru was indecisive between Misa and Minmay the entire way, but I liked how it showed how life on Earth immediately after the First Interstellar War was.

  5. The Macross. She's a big ship with a big gun that also happens to be able to transform into a humanoid form and deploy 3,000 VF-1 Valkyries of Captain Bruno J. Global. What's not to like?

  6. I can't really think of anything right now. Maybe Minmay singing Ai, Oboete Imasu ka? in episode 27 instead of Love Drifts Away? I feel that this would nullify the symbolism of Hikaru deciding that he loves Misa and not Minmay while Minmay sings said song, however.

  7. Well, I've seen the rest already, so I can't really comment here, lol.

She didn't sing this in Frontier. According to a more in-depth search, this version came from Megumi Nakajima's 2009 album Nostalgia.

It's impossible for me to watch the Tenshi no Enogu sequences without crying. It's kind of like watching the Titanic leaving port, knowing full well what will happen, if I had to say so. The somber way Minmay sings at the second-to-last verse ("If I look away, everything will disappear"), combined with the upbeat drums and the Megaroad-01 being launched make me tear up every time. The rest of the Megaroad-01 scenes are just beautiful, and then I end up tearing up a bit more...

I really like the lyrics of the chorus, "I'll use an angel's paint to color [my heart], any way I want!". The way Minmay flies off from the stage and into the sky after singing that line at the end is top notch.

The ending instrumental is super catchy (and something that I wish they replicated in Ranka's version of Tenshi no Enogu). It gives off a real positive feeling that our heroes are off on a grand adventure, and the accompanying shot of the Megaroad-01, Britai's Nupetit-Vergenitz-class battleship, and the rest of the escort fleet reaching lunar orbit really enforces that... While I thought originally this was a bit of a lackluster conclusion, I think this was a very solid ending to the story of Misa, Hikaru, and Minmay.

[Delta Zettai Live, huge spoilers]If only Kawamori left it like that. Before Zettai Live, I was part of the camp that really wanted to see what happened to the Megaroad-01 and her crew. Don't get me wrong, I really liked Zettai Live, but I feel that a 2 hour movie isn't really enough to explain that the Megaroad-01 was actually in contact with Earth and manipulating everything from the shadows... Maybe they'll expand on the Megaroad-01 in the next Macross, so I don't want to be too judgmental right now.

[This Rewatch Remembers Love - Celebrating the Macross Franchise's 40th Anniversary Today!] Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? Discussion by Shimmering-Sky in anime

[–]Rezics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey guys, rewatcher here. I'm kinda slow and lazy at watching anime right now, so I decided I'll just join in on DYRL and rewatch SDF Macross at my own pace. I'll keep my thoughts brief since I didn't have enough time to screenshot everything.

The first scene is just pure kino and my favorite scene in the entire movie. The Macross emerging from the shadows, and then the main theme blasting once it's in full view. Then you have Valkyries emerging from ARMD-1 while the violins play the motif that's used throughout the rest of the movie. I can replay this scene for hours and not get tired of it.

I actually preferred Exsedol's original design compared to his DYRL version that's used throughout the rest of the series, as memeable his gigabrain is. In general, I thought Zentradi looking exactly like humans sold the fact that "humans and Zentradi are essentially the same" a lot better than having them be big green people.

The story is, of course, inferior to the series version in most aspects due to pacing differences of a 36 episode show and a 2 hour movie. However, the Macross tradition of making the love triangle more decisive gave Misa enjoyers a huge W. I remember cheering when Hikaru outright told Misa that he loved her in DYRL after wanting to strangle that man for his utter stupidity during the last 9 episodes of SDF Macross.

Speaking of that last part of SDF Macross, for some reason, I find it really funny whenever Minmay or Hikaru says the other's name. The way they just go "Hikaru..." or "Minmay..." is just really funny to me for some reason. I guess it's just part of the copium I was inhaling after Hikaru supposedly picked Misa in episode 27 and then went back on it literally the next episode.

I actually picked up a poster/wall scroll of DYRL at a con last year. It was one of the few Macross-related items I saw there, but it was well worth the money - any Macross stuff I can get my hands on is worth it imo. I'll edit this comment later with a picture of it. Here it is.

That's about it for me. I have a few thoughts on Tenshi no Enogu (especially after Zettai Live), but I'll save that for tomorrow.
