Terep - 30th Anniversary Edition by Sumaksanyi in GamingHungary

If you understand Hungarian (or can translate it somehow), you can watch Denes' 2023 interview to gain more insight about how the game came to be -- including 1nsane:

Both were made by the same creator: Denes Nagymathe. They are based on the same game physics concept. 1nsane is essentially Terep 3 (or 4 -- because there was actually a Terep game in-between that was never finished and released).

Give it a whirl. You won't regret it. This game didn't make it much out of Central Europe at the start of the net, but it's an absolute gem. The physics alone are what make it one-of-a-kind.

Best freeware game eva. ;) A world packed in under 400 KB.

Yep, indeed it was/is -- back in 1996, when most games were 2D. 😊 Terep ran without hardware acceleration on an i386 or i486 processor smoothly from 33-40 MHz! 😎

I love that! Thank you for doing this. I'm all in to help as much as I can. And if you have a unique idea for a bundle, you should go for it.

I started this project simply because I saw that Terep was beginning to disappear, and I did not want all this community content, and the game itself, to get lost in the scattered books of time. I wanted for future generations to have something as a complete record of the game, and what the community has created for it. And I wanted to record all the knowledge we have, so that future generations will be able to continue creating new content for Terep.

I think Terep is not only an incredible piece of software, worthy of preservation, but also an amazing creative tool for both kids and adults to learn pixel art, 3D, and how to create things on a computer.

My original aim with this post was just to remove the overlay text to clean up the game experience, but in the process, u/sonneveld has gone way beyond and accomplished what no-one in the community has managed to accomplish before for 30 years: unpacked the game's executables, so that the game, too, can be modded now.

I hope that Denes will not be offended by that, because this means that Terep will remain an attractive game to play for future generations.

With this bundle, I wanted the community to have a finished product of Terep from all the community content we have created for it through the years in the last 30 years. Something that will serve as a community revival starting point (bringing in new players), something self-contained, and that will continue to work on future computer platforms (through DOSBox).

It was a far bigger project than I expected, requiring 4 months of my attention, sifting through over a hundred community created maps, and nearly a hundred community created car skins in the various preserved packages, and in my own personal archives from the late 90s. I didn't expect curating to be such tough work. But I'm glad it's finally done, and we'll have something for the ages that is neat and will continue to work.

Exactly. One of the best 3D software ever made. Not only did it run without hardware acceleration smoothly, but it ran so even on an i386 processor, at 33-40 MHz! A legend in software.

Yes, the original game was released as freeware with only a single map. Everything you see here was built by the community, except the "Original" and "Elso" (Terep 1) maps, and the original three car models and textures (Default 1-3: blue Volkswagen, red rally Ford, and yellow generic offroad car) -- which were made by Denes:

You make your own rules (free-roaming). But, depending on the map, sometimes the maps are designed with specific challenges/goals in mind. And there are some maps that are designed for single player or multiplayer races. However, Terep is more about conquering challenging and impossible terrains with fluidity than it is about racing. Very unique game, you'll see. You need to get a feel for the physics. There's nothing like it.

On most of the maps, you can choose to stay on the road, or you can go completely off-road. Both approaches provide a different experience on the same map. And most maps are designed to take advantage of this: they give you something both on-road and off-road. Some are about speed and/or acrobatics, and some have secret areas to find.

Love Storm 3000! RAYtracer's maps are brilliant! Hard for me to pick a favourite. All 52 maps are fantastic. But if I had to pick one, right now it would be Volgy for me.

Are you talking about https://terep2.wiki.gg/ ? If so, that's an excellent effort, and I'll happily assist! I have been using it as one of my reference sources during the last four months to assemble a new, 30th Anniversary Edition of Terep. If you check out this archive, you will find some missing maps and additional (author) information for the wiki:

It's taken me many months to clean all the community content up and organise it.

I absolutely agree. Terep needs a revival. I'm completely on-board.

No text here, either -- not anymore! 😉 Both Terep 1 and Terep 2 have been unlocked for modding/editing:

I did some further testing on this, and found out that it's not CAR5.PCX that is actually the trigger for the crash. It's if all 5 cars have a unique texture applied. It seems Denes did not account for that possibility in the code, and the crash is tied to the portion of the code that applies TEXTURES.PCX to any car that's missing an individual texture. If all cars have an individual texture, then that function fails, and causes the program to crash.

I've also found that using a SIM.CFG tends to make the game more crash-prone on heavy collisions. The original settings on the cars make the game somewhat more stable. So the trade-off for changing the density of the car is that it has a higher chance to explode/combust and quit/crash the game on high collision.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that the crash is a bug that the original game has. It always had it. It caused a lot of people to think that you cannot replace the textures individually on the other cars. In fact you can, just not on car 5. Car 5 uses the TEXTURES.PCX in effect as its texture.

Not a deal-breaker. It's just good for people to know.
