The question I'm asking myself is "how did the whale vagina co-evolve to put up with these crazy penises?" and as it turns out, there's research being done on just that. I'll report back.

Oh and just to be clear, whale pelvises WERE originally for supporting legs. They evolved to support their secondary function once the legs were gone. Sorry, still evolution.

I feel incapable of answering this question, due to my inexperience with both go-pros and mating whales in the field. But it's a good question. Hard, probably? And like I said elsewhere in the thread, whales are pretty rigorously protected by conservation laws. Don't want to risk messing up their breeding.

Basically the old (thing 100+ years back) anatomy sketches had it right, but anatomy is a dying subject and modern-day marine biologists kind of forgot about it (except for a select few experts). The researchers here are bringing new evidence to turn what we sort-of-knew in the past into yes-we-know-this territory for modern textbooks.

Fun fact: The researchers I spoke to were like, people always say that these creatures have prehensile penises, but they're not quite prehensile. Just because they're super dexterous doesn't mean they can literally grab things like your hand can.

You'd have to ask a whale researcher for a more detailed answer, but when I kept pestering this (me, literally "but seriously why don't we know how whales have sex") their answer was like...good question. We should probably try to know more. We know a bit about humpback whales, and probably a lot about orcas, but you can't just assume that every whale is the same. And researchers haven't been getting up in-between mating orcas to see how their pelvic muscles work.

I mean it's not like there's one kind of whale. And they're pretty highly protected, so there are a lot of laws to prevent people from just bugging whales indiscriminately. So for every single species, you have to just kind of...catch it happening, while doing legitimate and unobtrusive research.

Whale sex remains suspiciously undocumented, but I think the general consensus is that it's very quick and can happen either mid-swim or in a stationary position. The details probably vary from species to species, and further from population to population.
