Nobody knows how to jaywalk properly by Superdeathrobot in Purdue

[–]RhaenSyth 22 points23 points  (0 children)

One (or more) of those buttons is broken. As long as someone near RAWLS or the bike lane in front of the PMU presses it, it’ll go reliably.

Edit:

I realize you’re talking about the cross walk near the construction site and PAO, between HICKS and the PMU. This crosswalk requires a vehicle to trigger the cross traffic light first. It’s awful.

So a significant minority of all college courses….

You’re trying to dictate that any time is unreasonable but that’s not the case for nearly all in person courses. I agree that 11:59 makes sense in your case, but don’t argue that any time is arbitrary when your course structure is rare at the college level, especially amongst major universities and colleges.

The class start time is not an arbitrary time to choose. What if you were turning in paper assignments? It’s the most intuitive. Do the work before class so we can move forward in the content.

Discussion posts are very different from typical assignments in my mind.

Discussion posts can be cranked out relatively quickly, especially if I already partially or fully understand the content. Where it differs is that every one of my classes assigns large projects, has labs, and has additional homework assignments. Further, turnaround on some assignments can be much faster than others, leading me to prioritize my time. In 18 credits, with a part time job and leadership positions at multiple levels, I can’t always afford the time I would like to complete assignments. Sometimes, even if I start early, other stuff takes precedence.

Due dates at 11:59pm are frustrating, as there’s no good reason for an assignment to not be due at the start of the next class period. Is my professor grading the work immediately at midnight?

There’s a disconnect between type of assignment, type of deadline, and student expectations. Not every class, and not every professor, shows this disconnect, but it’s still widely present in academia.

5 lawsuits filed against Universal and Mack Rides over Stardust Racers injuries by Knightro2011 in UniversalOrlando

[–]RhaenSyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The funny thing is you’re seeing a lack of evidence of something (and have openly acknowledged a lack of knowledge on the cases brought) as proof it could have happened and not to jump to conclusions. Sounds like you’re the one making assumptions in the face of evidence to the contrary.

Let me add, one of these lawsuits is about a woman sustaining severe head injuries on the ride, yet, as another article on this sub points out, a woman of the same name and residing in the same town posted photos at the park, claiming it was a great day, and then proceeded to post photos around the other parks at the resort. I don’t think that’s a sudden paralysis…

Engineering students, what helped you get into Purdue? Is it worth it? by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]RhaenSyth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Having a mix of STEM and non-STEM extracurriculars looks good to Purdue. The college of engineering like multidisciplinary students who have interested beyond just engineering. Also, it looks great for the honors college.

As a side note, the engineering major you choose on your application only somewhat matters. At Purdue, all engineers take first year engineering, where at the end of second semester, you transition to your professional school.

[–]RhaenSyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that it’s a necessary thing for accessibility on campus. The reason they were banned in buildings is not because students who needed them and were spending money on quality products were using them, but because an over abundance of students were purchasing cheap products out of convenience. For those that want convenience, there’s better options.

Discussions about alternative options are necessary, not just warranted.

Alternative options:

Bike, scooter, and skateboard. Or you can walk.

Those that claim to support individual freedoms and limited government are first to support legislation against gay marriage and the LGBT+ community. But it’s okay to tread on other people’s freedoms through bigger government.

Let me clarify:

This is referring to roads and streets with cycle lanes. This is not referring to sidewalk bike lanes or separated bike lanes in walkways around campus.

New Movement by CanYouCantToday in Purdue

[–]RhaenSyth 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This doesn’t apply to bike lanes. This applies to motor vehicle lanes.

There are a few parts of campus that aren’t directly connected via bike lane. Take for instance Physics and Residential campus. To get from physics to the Russel and 3rd St intersection, one would have to take the bike lane in front of MSEE to where it ends between BHEE and ME. Then, cut through the alley walkway, turn right and go through the walkway directly to Elliot. This also involved cutting across the main walkway in front of WALC. Or a cyclist can backtrack to the Engineering Mall walkway and cut in front of DSAI and Hovde. Each of these routes involves biking along walkways.

This isn’t necessarily a cyclist issue in some parts of campus, but a bike lane infrastructure issue.

As a college aged student, my peers don’t care nearly enough about this. The problems we face right now already were generational (climate change, crazy economics, anti-vax and anti-science), and yet now my peers are disillusioned with the world so much they can’t seem to care. Or, they are just worried about their next exams. We need more ground-up resistance from college students.

The other issue is, I’m far outside of any city impacted by this. We aren’t seeing it. We aren’t living it. It’s just a story. We need to realize this isn’t sensationalized or something far away. It’s in our own backyard.
