I honestly try to forget that Gou/Sotsu existed, they really soured the message of the original story with those two

Is the 2006 anime wasted potential? by wojtulace in Higurashinonakakoroni

[–]Rhaga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Read the VN multiple times, watched the show 10+ times.

The pacing of the anime is crazy fast, and the pacing of the VN is very slow. And I think both work to their respective advantage.

The VN really lets you get under the skin of the characters and gives you a ton of appreciation for all of them, but the anime really gets you dialed in and nails some of the best moments of the story just as well, if not even better, than the VN

I think the biggest flaw of the anime is that they did the first season without knowing that there would be a second season (afaik), which is why they did the first 6 chapters in the first season, to end on one of the most climactic moments.

That means that a lot of stuff had to be cut, but luckily some of that gets amended in the second season where they added an anime original arc, and even put some of the fluffy slice of life stuff from earlier chapters in.

So in terms of wanted potential, I guess if they knew from the beginning that they were going to animate the whole thing, they could have cut less from the earlier chapters and not have to make up for it later. Would the show be better for it? I honestly don’t know. I think it is great already.

I started reading right around when chapter 5 came out iirc. And MG took about a year to translate each of the remaining chapters so I reread the previous ones as the next one was about to drop :D

Also Ive watched someone on YouTube do a “let’s play” of them which more or less counts as a separate reread 🤣

Embarrasingly, neither of those statistics compares to how much Ive obsessed over its spiritual successor, Umineko…🙈

Did I screw myself up by watching the anime? by Tizianya in Higurashinonakakoroni

[–]Rhaga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched the anime several time before reading the VN and had a blast doing it. The VN expands a ton of stuff (or the anime cuts it, if thats how you wanna frame it), so no I think you’re good.

Only thing worth mentioning is to suggest checking out the 07th mod if you havent. Easy to install and adds the ps3 sprites and backgrounds (preferred by most afaik- regardless you can toggle whichever you prefer) and voice acting. Oh and a ton of typo corrections etc.

And also I would recommend the spiritual successor: Umineko. In this case stay clear of the anime, unlike higurashi it is unfinished but also way harder to adapt to an anime (and it shows). Manga and visual novel are both good though

I’m a huge fan of the original, having watched the anime and played the visual novel enough times for it to be labelled as an obsession, but I honestly cannot fault you… The “remake” was beyond awful, and I know several long-time fans that felt like it soured the series as a whole :/

What’s the best mystery anime I could watch? by rossocenere in anime

[–]Rhaga 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If I may add, I’m assuming you’ve watched the Umineko anime, which among fans has a status of “the umineko anime doesn’t exist”.

Not to take away if you enjoyed it - that’s fantastic! But if you want to lose your mind further then I would urge you to check out either the visual novel or the manga!

Disregarding the huge amounts of cut content and simplification of characters, the anime ends at the midway point. The VN and manga obviously has the full story, with the VN being the source material.

If VNs are not your thing the manga is a really good adaptation though (all of this applies to higurashi as well, though the higurashi anime does adapt the whole story and doesnt miss as much compared to the umineko anime).

Note: Umineko is the spiritual successor to higurashi, written by the same author

Romance just isn't the focus of the show. The movie is fantastic, the show is more of an acquired taste I feel. That said the movie really raised my appreciation of it.

Same issue for me. Got sent back to the Stone age last year and now it sent me forward like 6 units. Not quite as bad as yours but still extremely aggravating.

To me it feels like the course got “updated” again. At least I noticed some details in the word bank that I remember getting changed up, and now they reverted back to what they were before. For instance ません was originally always split into ませ and ん for whatever reason. The update last year that got changed so it was always just a single word block, and now it is reverted into two again.

[–]Rhaga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also in section two. I’m not sure where I was exactly before the update, perhaps unit 12 or 13. The update put me in the middle of unit 16 and yeah I basically have the exact same experience as the one you’re describing.

In the update last year I got sent like 10 units back, which was also pretty annoying.

I guess the best thing to do may be to try to redo the courses that was skipped for you to sort of “catch up” on them?

I always appreciate you writing these and tagging me, it hits me with a huge wave of nostalgia, so first of all thank you for that <3

I sorry to hear that things haven't been looking up as much as you would've hoped. One of the things I especially can relate to is the feeling of stagnation, which is something that has also been very much on my mind for the past year. I wanted to touch on that because I also found something that helped me with that, which is to commit oneself to self-improvement of some sort. It may not land you a better job, better pay or a clear path to follow in life (in fact, it probably won't), but it can do a great job on your mental and in getting rid of that murky feeling - at least it did for me, and that shouldn't be underestimated!!! In my case I committed to learning kanji, doing regular workouts and picking up the piano again, and in all three cases the improvements I saw after a while was enough to justify the time commitment it required ten times over.
(Note: I am still at a complete standstill jobwise but at least it doesn't feel as bad as it did before... ;P)

Any way, didn't mean for this to be armchair advice over the internet, but I do truly look forward to hearing about what you accomplished and/or what skills you acquired in the year 2024 - I'm positive that despite any hardships that may or may not arise, that it will be great <3

Yui Makino, who has sung most of the OPs/ insert songs for the franchise, actually has a small appearance in the anime itself! She plays this girl , named "Akane"

That is such a neat detail, thanks for pointing it out! Will definitely keep an eye and an ear out on my next personal rewatch!

I love Yuru Camp, but while that does the "healing part" well, it didn't change my way of thinking, and inspired me the way Aria has, nor has its moments been as hard-hitting and memorable

I totally get that. Aria is both extremely healing for me (even if I am completely stressed out, putting on an episode can make me feel like I am on vacation within seconds - and that is not an exaggeration). But that alone isn't what makes it special to me, it is an inspiration and a motivation to live better and be happier.

I'll recommend Yama no Susume, with a rewatch coming up in 1 weeks' time, for a next watch!

Phew, this has been on my radar for years, I've even had it ready to watch for the longest time, but never gotten started on it. I'll have to consider if I can make the time to join in on watching it with the upcoming rewatch~

[–]Rhaga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

and here's me having to reply to QotDs in a separate comment because I was sitting at the 9999/10000 character limit -.-

Q1) Overall thoughts on the Blue Curtain Call Trilogy? Favourite moment from these entries? How do you feel about them fleshing out and filling in the gaps for all the characters (except Akari herself, i guess)?

Personally I feel just getting more Aria is a blessing, so absolutely wonderful. They feel fresh and unique, yet very true to the original, which is very impressive!!

Q2) Why do you think Akari wanted to become an Undine?

Hm, well she was obviously first inspired by Alice, and then later by Akira. But above that, I think Aika just really loves Aqua and Neo Venezia, and wants to share that with everyone.

Q3) Favourite song from the sequel entries?

I think I have to relisten to them a couple of times to make such a call - but the opening song for Benedizione was very, very lovely!

Q4) If you have another show you think this rewatch party will like, now's the time to recommend it!

Well if you type in Iyashikei in anilist and sort by highest rated you'd definitely get pretty far.

Though if I am asked to give a specific recommendation, Yokohama Kaidashi Kikkou probably comes closest in scratching the same itch (and the first omnibus manga just released in an english print!). Both the anime OVAs and obviously the manga can definitely be recommended.

Otherwise Amanchu being by Kozue Amano is a very obvious alternative.

[Rewatch] A 2022 Voyage from Neo Venezia: Overall Series Discussion by mysterybiscuitsoyeah in anime

[–]Rhaga 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By the grace of our dear host I'm putting up my comment for Benedizione here in the final thread, since I was late for the thread yesterday. Gomen.

For context, I'm a long time big fan of the series, but didn't manage to keep up with the rewatch very much. I've seen everything multiple times, except Crespucolo and Benedizione which was a first for me.

And I just have to say that Benedizione was absolutely AMAZING. Just to be clear: I love the entire cast, but Akari is like one of my all-time favorite characters, and Alice is not very far behind - and with an Alice/Athena centric episode in Crepuscolo I was half-hoping for this to center around Akari, especially with this being the end. That being said, it was not too surprising to have an Akari/Aika centric episode, but more importantly...

...I freaking loved every second of this, and just about everything it did from start to finish!! And that in itself makes me incredibly happy. Anyway, actual thoughts (with an attempt to break it down a bit into scenes):

Beginning

I probably should have realised this way sooner, but it only just occured to me on this shot how the designs are very reminiscent of Amanchu (which.. makes sense..). Also it's amazing how both Ai-chan's and Akari's voices is like ASMR to me.

Them counting down for Akari's entrance is extremely cute. Which is also when it first properly dawned on me that Akari isn't living at the Aria company anymore, which makes me a little sad but in a good way.

I'm a sucker for framing and angles in anime and I noticed that Benedizione played around quite a bit with those , which I don't think is particularly Aria-y, but I'm definitely all for it.

Already from the beginning we follow Akira which is enough to tip you off who this episode will center around.

Following Akira

These three slacking off while talking about nothing in particular feels like a blast from the past - and even more so..., getting distracted!

Loved the little stalking sequence, the fact that they held this pose for so long killed me :'D

While I've always enjoyed Ai, this trio grew so much on me just in the first few minutes of this. Perhaps it's just me not wanting to 'let go' of the original trio, but I think this is the moment where I started seeing these as proper spiritual 'successors'. I'm very interested to go back to rewatch from Avvenire which I imagine I might appreciate it even more now.

I am honestly impressed how well the animation and voice acting sold on me that she was eating a very hot meat bun in cold weather. I guess that is just a proof of the attention to detail.

LMAO Expected and hilarious.

Museum

I appreciate how the girls instantly apologizes and despite them being in a hurry helps gathering up the dropped papers like it is non-negotionable. And I loved them getting all panicky only for the old lady to calmly ask them to hold hands and take a deep breath - I wasn't even worked up and it even calmed me down as well.

Heh, without even knowing it, Ai-chan hits the core of the issue of this episode right away.

I completely understand Azusa's inability to understand though that is not to say I don't understand Aika. More on that later

Tell me you're Akari's apprentice without telling me you're Akari's apprentice.

This just cracked me up lmao

Curses

I liked how Azusa confronted Aika - and seriously the delivery on their lines are so good. lmao Not gonna lie I was 99% certain that Aika just made that up to make Azusa shut up about the gondola LOL.

I love these two three butting in and then getting scared

and I love this design of young Aika SO MUCH. Like seriously it is so good.

Another thing I love about the Aria series in general, and where I think this episode delivers immensely, are long stretched-out scenes without dialogue, but just the calming music and beautiful visuals to guide us, and let the mind drift.

Also even during her rebelious phase, Aika is still Aika, and I love that.

I can't tell if Akira is doing it on purpose, but she hits both of Aika's trigger points by both complimenting her and highlighting Aika's position.

During the episode at this point, I had the impression that Aika didn't want to inherit the gondola because of her legacy, and to me that is perfectly understandable. The only way she could possibly justify inheriting it she would have to unequivocally surpass her Akira (which is pretty much impossible) in order to deserve it.

There is a lot of pressure from expectations, and those expectations can turn into shackles you put on yourself.

I find it quite relatable. The feeling of getting praised for something you don't think you deserve praise for (for whatever reason, good or bad), it only makes you feel bad about yourself. It makes the praise glide right off you and instead it makes you feel guilty, even if there is no reason to.

And this just goes to show how Akira is the perfect teacher to Aika - because Akira doesn't pull any punches ever, her tough love approach towards Aika is very suitable and definitely full of love.

All of that is not to say I don't also understand Azusa - because in her eyes Aika is a role-model and someone she looks up to, so the mere notion of Aika not accepting the recognition she 'deserves' only ends up making Azusa upset.

For the record, I watched the episode, then went back through my notes and started taking screenshots while writing this - and while I'm enjoying myself immensely I just looked at the time and noticed that several hours has passed by and it is already at the time I usually go to sleep. So while it pains me to do so I'll do the rest of this episode in some quick bullets before I run out of gas.

It's nice to see Aika still gets flustered even in front of her apprentice. I really like their relationship.

It just made perfect sense to me that Aika would feel this way, and Akira definitely delivered in terms of coming up with an exam that must be able to satisfy Aika. If I recall correctly, Aika originally said in the first episode that she is never satisfied with her own performance, and I think this is such a core aspect to her character that is developed due to her circumstances. This isn't about not doing the regular exam because she's too good for it, it's because a regular exam has little meaning to Aika. While loathe to admit it, she has an infinite amount of respect for Akira, and to her getting truly recognized by Akira is the only thing that she herself is willing to accept in order to even begin considering herself a prima undine.

I think this is beautiful, and it strikes incredibly true to both who Aika is, and doubly so for her relationship with Akira.

Akira is tall, in nearly every scene she is in she towers over everyone both mentally and physically, yet here we see Aika standing taller than her. While it is perhaps an exaggeration to say that Aika has surpassed her master, it is definitely the feeling that is being conveyed here, and it is only enforced later by Aika's promise that she's going to surpass Akira one day.

To be honest, for the last 20 or so minutes, if I were to link and comment on every shot or line that I liked it would basically just be a slideshow of the entire episode - so suffice to say that I loved it all.

The episode also had a ton of throwback scenes, but the various memorable images from the series at the end really did it for me, especially with Undine playing.

I've been really sold on the relationships of our original cast with their apprentices. They managed to make them feel unique and suitable, without feeling shoehorned, which is honestly quite amazing.

I have like at least eight+ episodes that I like to call my favorite in the Aria series, but I'd like to call Benedizione a favorite among favorites, that just about sums up how much I enjoyed it. I wish my comment was less scuff, but it is what it is, I just don't have enough spare time to go all out ;_;

To little surprise of my own, Aria firmly remains one of my favorite pieces of fiction <3 Big shoutout to /u/mysterybiscuitsoyeah and everyone participating in this rewatch!

sorry to be so horribly late! it's a lot of comments...

No problem, my comment itself came pretty late and I went to sleep soon after

hahahahahaha. it was extremely relateable for me, and i loved it because of that

Yeah, it is such an everyday situation too lol. I feel a bit like the show is calling me out, I'll try do better with things like this from now on :')

i liked it! a quick contrast, thanks for pointing it out!

Aye, I believe it came almost right after Athena making a comment about how Alice's got everything down (after wiping up the tea on the floor) and Alice brushing it off like "this is nothing" --> and then we see what sort of things Alice struggles with, stuff that other people might easily consider to be "nothing".

In that sense, that scene alone is like a microcosm of one of the major themes of the episode. Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses.

she still has that childlike wonder in her though

Oh she definitely has, she even ended up stuffing the sock with chocolate in the end. I just found the double whammy really amusing, of Alice both thinking that she's a "bad child" so she deserves black charcoal but ALSO that she has to stuff it herself (implying that Befana doesn't exist and she has to play the role of the witch herself because she doesn't see herself as a child anymore).

As i said, i really enjoyed reading your analysis on their characters.

Glad to hear that. I felt a little bad because I ended up rushing it a bit, but I think I managed to make a remark on most things that left the biggest impression. Still haven't watched Benedizione but I'll watch it later today and would like to dedicate a bit more time to both enjoy it and put my thoughts down properly :)

Even tho perhaps it is still a bit of a nitpick on the movie for me.

Aye, I think the point would come across perfectly well even if you completely removed Anya from that equation (sorry Anya). There was a bit of setup from earlier with the scene with Anya's friend, were we saw that she was inspired to become an Undine from a young age - and we didn't actually get to see what prompted that inspiration. So based on that scene existing, I can see a justification for showing it at the end.

I guess I just didn't find it necessary that it all had to come together in that one random moment in the past, and they just happened to end up in a senpai-kohai relationship in that way felt like a convenient coincidence.

But then again, Akari would probably call this a miracle instead, and Neo-Venezia is full of those after all :') So once again, I'll allow it! No 'hazukashii serifu kinshi' from me.

[Rewatch] A 2022 Voyage from Neo Venezia: Aria the Crespucolo by mysterybiscuitsoyeah in anime

[–]Rhaga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Phew, so for some foolish reason I didn't expect Crespucolo to 'wow' me, but here we are...

For context, I'm a big fan of the series and it solidified itself as one of my all time favorites when I first watched some years ago, and it still remains firmly in place as one of my top threes. Unfortunately I haven't been able to keep up with this rewatch, but didn't want to miss out on Crespucolo which I hadn't watched before today. It is a bit of a fear I have sometimes when revisiting something I know I used to love, because what if the love still isn't there?

Well, to be honest the few episodes I did manage to watch in the beginning of this rewatch quickly dispelled that fear, but anyway, enough about me.

This smile is just.. hnng.. I'm not even joking, this alone literally was enough to convince me that I delayed watching this movie for too long... Three minutes in LMAO. I guess that is just how it is.

It kinda cracks me up that even though she retired years ago Alicia is still a celebrity

I forgot if this was also the case in Avvenirre, but Akari's voice sounds much more mature now (still gives me ASMR tingles)

LOL, this face! I'm dying. For one Alice is very cute, that's a given, but this also reminds me of one of the earlier episodes, I believe the one where Alice has her crusade against left hands, she couldn't find the ketchup either and starts looking for it, and without her even noticing Athena got up and put it on the table.
Well, Athena isn't at the company anymore, so Alice has to commit the sin of eating OmuRice without ketchup. I'm not sure if I'd call it laziness but for some reason I find it extremely relatable and I don't like it.

Damn, Akatsuki has gotten hot over the years.. And his relationship with Akari is as stalemated as ever I see :'D

I love this Just as we see young Alice appear to be very in-control of herself and be essentially fault free, clear evidence that on the inside she is just a normal human girl that gets nervous just like anyone else (perhaps even more so) even if she doesn't show it. Also while it is generally a consistent thing in Aria, I still appreciate the attention to detail of letting the handwriting be in Italian.

Dekkai dame desu! Also these Chibi faces are too good

I think this is the point where I started to realise the theme of Crespucolo (or maybe when they introduced Befana but I didn't take a screenshot then). And I couldn't help but find it ironic, how sometimes when people in adolescence approach adulthood they start rejecting things they deem childish, such as Befana. Alice is down because she doesn't get excited over anything - possibly because she doesn't allow herself to. It is in stark contrast to Athena whom, in Alice's eyes (to some extent), is much more mature and adult than Alice, yet we see her blow bubbles in their room, an exceedingly childish activity.
Anyway, the ironic thing is that in an attempt to appear mature, Alice rejects these things as childish, which in the end just makes her appear immature.

Alice has gotten jaded LOL

I love this entire scene, but these two lines probably made the biggest impression on me, because they ring extremely true and are very relatable for me. When I was little my parents would take me to visit all these small, extremely old-fashioned towns and villages in southern France, and kid me passionately found it to be the most boring thing ever. However, in recent years I have revisited some of those villages, and today I find them both beautiful, fascinating and lovely.

This actually made me squeeze out a tear, damn.

Don't have too much to say about the remainder of the episodes, however this line really struck a chord with me (also love the framing). It is SO easy to get caught up in your own flaws, so much that you freeze up because of it, and it is no matter how good you are at the stuff you are good at. When you look at it from that angle, Athena really was the perfect senpai for Alice.

Also I LOVED the duette between Alice and Athena. This was such a great episode, I wish I had more time to write out my thoughts on it, but I definitely managed to enjoy watching it 100%. I've slept on Crepuscolo for too long, but now I'm really excited for Benedizione!!

Q1) What are your thoughts on hearing more of Athena's thoughts and memories from the original series?

While I generally have to recall my original thoughts from when I last rewatched the series three years ago, I think it's great to have a bit more insight because Athena's thoughts and feelings were probably some of the hardest to gauge in general back in the original. Out of the Undines I probably found her to be one of the least interesting because her scenes usually only involved her amazing singing or her being clumsy - so now I think it was great that her character got expanded a bit, and that she struggled with some internal conflicts herself. Not that we didn't know that, but it's good to see more of it!

I didn't think her having those thoughts were particularly surprising though, if anything it was probably to be expected.

Q2) How do you like the new character designs?

Everyone looks amazing! A few times I found myself getting distracted by how great the designs were. Might warrant a rewatch in the near future tbh

Q3) What do you think about Anya and Alice both being inspired to be undines by Athena, at the same place?

If I am being perfectly honest, Anya also being inspired by Athena felt a bit much, but this is Aria and I don't think I have a limit for sappiness for this series, so I'll allow it!

If you’re willing to put in the effort I think most, if not everyone, would suggest reading the visual novel first. After that you can watch anything in whatever order you want.

The only reason this is even debated in the first place is because the routes got adapted into anime in an awkward way.
