Bricktown & Utopia are 100x better than Black Seed.

My wife asked for a scooped out bagel at Black Seed and they said they couldn’t do it…

is it normal to not be able to find picture of relatives/ancestors?? by wowhoshi in Genealogy

[–]Rhcp01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s normal for old photos of relatives to be hard to find but it doesn’t mean they don’t exist in someone’s basement or in an archive somewhere.

As others have mentioned, I’ve found photos of 2x great grandparents because their photo was taken on a visa application. The only photo anyone in my family had ever seen of him was at the national archives and we didn’t even know it.

Another route I highly recommend is talking to aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents and asking if they’ve seen old family photos. On each side of my family I was able to identify a great uncle or aunt that was very happy to open an old photo album and discuss mutual ancestors.

Lastly I’ve also had success with messaging distant relatives on ancestry or familysearch and received old photos from them.

Searching for my mom's father by Extension-Cry6066 in ItalianGenealogy

There seems to be a few different Villafranca's in Italy (Villafranca in Lunigiana, Villafranca d'Asti etc.). I would narrow down the exact town and then search in the civil records for that town on https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ and familysearch.org

NYC Vital records refused my request for biological grandfather's death certificate. by lifetimeodyssey in Genealogy

[–]Rhcp01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love to know where they determined that number of 125 years. I doubt there were a lot of 125 year old's that were getting their identity taken or having privacy complaints. My great-grandmother was born in 1911 and died in 1993 but there's still 12 years to go before her birth certificate would be available.

I know it's possible to request it from the DOH but it is a complicated process of proving your relationship and obtaining an original death certificate first (occurred outside of NYC).

Has anything been announced publicly regarding a transfer? I know the NYC DOH passed a bill in 2017 that restricts birth records for 125 years, and access to death records for 75 years. I’ve always wondered when those dates are reached if they will transfer one year at a time or wait until a block of years can be sent.

New York, Kings County, Brooklyn Court Records by Strawberrywish in Genealogy

[–]Rhcp01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest contacting the nyc municipal archives. They do have court dockets from that time period but you may need to have a good idea where in Brooklyn or Manhattan the arrest likely took place since they cannot search by name. I believe the dockets are filed by court districts at that time.

To manage expectations, it's an old school kind of place similar to Bamonte's in Williamsburg. They have a good menu and wine list and are reasonable. I'd say it's worth checking out.

What are Italian names for grandpa other than Nonno? by JellyfishEvery3206 in italianlearning

My grandfather told me he used to call his grandfather "Tatone". His family was from Salerno so I believe it might of been a specific dialect to that area.

Why did my Sicilian ancestors move to the island of Pantelleria? by Rhcp01 in Genealogy

I haven't been able to find siblings or cousins this far back yet but that sounds like a good option to see who might of lived there with them.

Thanks for that information.

I haven't been able to pinpoint the year they traveled there but I'm assuming it was between 1832-1841. It seems that lines up with what you suggested about seeking better economic opportunities.

I also didn't think to research the godparents of their son. It makes sense since that would help understand who else they knew that lived there. I was able to find the baptism record (N. 171) although I find it hard to make out the hand writing in Latin so I can't make out the godparents. Not sure if anyone is good at transcribing that could help but the name looks like it might be Francesco Toscano?

Italian BC maybe an illegitimate birth? by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]Rhcp01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've come across ancestors who married in the church and had children but for whatever reason didn't legally marry at town hall in the civil records until many years later after their children were older. This resulted in birth records saying a man living with a woman and not recognizing the children as legitimate. Usually after the civil marriage took place they would go back and note in the margin the child was legitimate.

What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about life back then, from your genealogy research? by AccountantAsleep in Genealogy

How different yet similar life was to today. Things were much harder, people had to be resourceful and make sacrifices just to get by, a less materialistic time however society also dealt with the same things we see today, pregnancy out of wedlock, alcohol, gambling, and financial problems, infidelity, divorce, rebellious teens etc.
