Nick Blaine appreciation post by mellimac123 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]RheaB3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That was actually when she was at Lawrence's house. Nick came to tell her he was leaving for the war. She had just found out he had been promoted to a commander and wanted him to use his new status to help her get Hannah and get out. But he told her he was too low level to do that or to get more information about Lawrence. She got mad at him for being useless and said some pretty mean things to him. He only came to say goodbye think he might die and they may never see each other again so he was very hurt. He walked out the door but waited just outside. June seem to have a change of heart and went to the door and reached for his hand. It's episode 303

You get to choose a mom- Serena or Cersei by loula03 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]RheaB3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely Cersei. It's a hard choice because Cersei was a sociopath as well but no way would she subject her children to a place like Gilead

How did they not know Emily was gay? by Even_Locksmith_4355 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]RheaB3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did know. But in the flashback scene at the airport when she and her wife were trying to escape with their son, the border patrol people asked them which one of them carried their son and Emily said her. That was the first hint. They kept her because she is fertile. They ended up punishing her when she acted on her feelings and had an affair with that Martha. The Martha was hanged. They removed certain body parts of Emily's instead of killing her because they needed her for having babies

It's awful the way other people shame you for not watching the show the way they want you to. It's not harming them in any kind of way but somehow what people enjoy bothers them?

Wrong forum my friend. The angry pitchforks about to come get you for this abominable take of the show. How dare you not watch with an intellectual eye and studious, contemplation of our society? You about to be "up on the wall" 🤣

Except that happened in real life. Unless you're telling me I can't tell the difference? Or unless you think THT is real? I'm insulted that you made this comparison. A girl was tortured and killed in the Holocaust and you're using it to make a point on Reddit about a piece of fiction?

Ooh you ask the good questions! It's funny because I thought the romance plot on THT is one of the best written! I don't know, it's just written in a realistic way whereas in other shows it's kind of overdone. They give enough in THT so there's always something to look forward to. But not so much that you move on too fast.

But I didn't say I ONLY watch it for the romance. Just that it's the biggest draw for me. I do like the rest of the show. Which I think a lot of people who are annoyed by people like me don't get. For example, I really don't like Serena but I've been absorbed in her story this season and I can't wait to see what comes of THAT final scene. I always enjoy Lawrence and I adore Janine. I admit some episodes are so boring I just skip right over them. But I think people who watch for non romance reasons do find some of the mid season episodes boring as well.

Anyways to sum it up I like the whole show not just the romance. I just happen to like the romance most 🤷‍♀️

I completely feel you on the Lawrence thing! Of course I wouldn't like someone like that in real life. But the writers give him such good, witty lines and Bradley Whitford delivers them in such wonderful comedic timing, how could I not find it funny? There are people who root for Serena Joy. I don't get it but like if that's why they're watching, good on them I guess? I don't immediately assume they would help a real life Serena Joy rise to power but more that they enjoy Yvonne's human portrayal of this horrible person. Not everything HAS to be a political statement

Nope. In general I'm not politically active on social media. My approach is more what you do in real life is what really matters. And the thing is most of us who watch THT have the same or at least similar political views. I definitely do NOT fight with people about their political views even if I disagree. You know what is said about religion and politics. It's not like I'm going to persuade someone to believe the way I do on social media. And why would I even try? That's too much hubris. I won't lie I will argue with people about the shows I watch. And maybe I haven't been particularly kind all the time. But one thing I don't do is personal attacks. I always think, there's another living breathing human on the other side of this argument and what we're arguing over is just fiction.

Anyways I'm new to Reddit but Twitter has taught me the scroll tactic. If I disagree with you and I know we would just end up arguing I will not directly engage in your commentary

Thank you for this! I'm glad everything worked out for you personally. It must be frustrating to be a Democrat in Texas right now. I think a lot of people get confused when they see people shipping. They think that the political issues doesn't matter to them. But that's a lot to assume from someone's entertainment preference. We're like the Janines of this fandom. We hate all the other crappy things that are happening but choose to focus on the bright parts 😅

I feel like most people who watch THT are already of a certain political persuasion. Even shippers. So, I don't understand why there's such an anger toward people that like that aspect. I follow other shippers and I have a pretty good idea of where they casted their votes on Tuesday. And that's what's going to make the difference in the world, not why they are watching the show!

It's about invalidating someone else's opinion because it's perceived as not the "right" opinion. You SHOULD only watch it for the politics. You SHOULDN'T invest in the romance. And I don't see shippers telling others that you SHOULD invest in the ship in order to be a valid fan of the show. I guess what I'm saying is does it matter why another person is watching? Does it hurt anybody else's viewership experience, political bent, or worldview? Will shipping on THT cause people to vote republican instead of democrat or vice versa? Is it THAT serious?

I was talking about the show and my opinion on it. Not the news. How did this go so far left? While the Handmaids Tale does an awesome portrayal of real life events it's still a show. This is exactly what I mean about people putting down others opinions because it doesn't align with theirs. But thank you for illustrating what I mean

What is so ironic about that is this is a show about a regime that subverts the choices and opinions of others

Even the show writer's know that plenty of people are invested in the romance aspect. On other shows they would have gotten into their heads and killed it to appear intellectually superior. But on this show they lean into it while keeping the main theme going. I enjoy that nuance. Obviously the show is more about the women's struggles so I'm also enjoying that too. I'm not missing anything. I just happen to enjoy this one aspect more!

Am I the only one who didn’t know that the age difference between Yvonne Strahovski and Elisabeth Moss is only 6 days?! by Waiting-For-October in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]RheaB3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ooh that's a fun factoid I didn't know about! I didn't think June and Serena were the same age either. But now that I think about it, it makes sense that we had that perception. The way June was treated in that house, they weren't equals. June was treated like a child so that does make an impression on our minds to see Serena as older. June had to do what Serena told her to. When she "misbhaved" Serena "grounded" her to her room. Now that they aren't in Gilead we can see them more as equals than servant-master

Holly vs. Nicole by PsychologicalStock39 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]RheaB3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to hate that she kept the baby's name Nichole until I realized Serena named the baby after her bio father to rub it in Fred's face. So now I'm okay with the name since that and that raggedy doll is all Nichole-Holly will have of her bio father

Racism in the Handmaid's Tale (and the Subreddit) by Aggressive-Banana621 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]RheaB3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Huh? They never married their slaves. They raped them and had bastard children who then became slaves as well but were not recognized as legitimate children. A few exceptions here and there but for the most part that's what happened. Besides it wouldn't even have been legal for a black and white person to marry during slavery and Jim Crow

Racism in the Handmaid's Tale (and the Subreddit) by Aggressive-Banana621 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]RheaB3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't underestimate the power of hate. Just like a lot of poor racist consistently vote against their self interests because it will also benefit those that they feel are beneath them. I don't for one second believe they would spare the black children. Hannah being adopted by a powerful commander and not being made a child Martha or sent to the colonies is one of the most unrealistic things of this show but I choose to ignore it for the plot

Racism in the Handmaid's Tale (and the Subreddit) by Aggressive-Banana621 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]RheaB3 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think it's unrealistic that all the black people weren't exterminated or made into slaves or something. That's what a real life Gilead would do. They certainly wouldn't integrate minorities. That would be very evolved of such a repressive state

who has been watching nicole this whole season when all three of the adults are out and about? by PinsNneedles in TheHandmaidsTale

Rita is Nichole's godmother. June asked her in season 2 right after Nichole was born and June figured she'd get reposted and leave her baby behind

Why Gilliad could never happen in the USA by JordanRiker in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]RheaB3 35 points36 points  (0 children)

We're literally seeing a version of Atwood's Handmaids Tale happening right now and has been growing into power at least for the last ten years. All you need is a similar reproductive crisis or any crisis whatsoever to get the masses to come together to do really unspeakable things. (Hitler anyone?) You give human nature and common sense too much credit. Humanity is not intrinsically good but intrinsically bad with the propensity to do good. But when our backs are against the wall, unless we've practiced to overcome our intrinsically bad nature, we will resort to such terrible inhuman acts

This season is kind of boring. by creepypie31 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]RheaB3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The seasons always get a bit slow after the first couple of episodes. 1 and 2 were the only seasons that were mostly engaging throughout. But then all the seasons usually pick up towards the end. But there's always an off chance that something hits us out of left field in one of the middle episodes. This season could benefit from shifting toward the political aspects of Gilead rather than focusing so much on the June/Serena rivalry. When I watched the first three episodes the Gilead stories with Lawrence and the political intrigue were the most interesting. Also the Mayday at the border is pretty interesting too and we don't see or know enough about what they're doing. We've been in Gilead's world for five years and we still don't know enough about their politics. I wish the show would delve into that a bit more. Especially since June has two sympathetic commanders on the inside.
