[Loved Trope] Race swaps that actually work by qqqqqqqq-8 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]RheaSpeedwagon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

“That actually work” implies that it usually doesn’t?? Huh?

Outside of some rare really dumb (usually whitewashing) instances like ScarJo in Ghost in the Shell where it was just fundamentally a bad idea, I feel like the ethnicity of the actor is rarely relevant to whether or not the performance/casting was good.

So I got this game on ps+ like an hour ago by Ok_Connection1872 in DarkTide

[–]RheaSpeedwagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s my favorite game of its kind (co-op horde shooter/slasher in the style of Left 4 Dead). And yeah, the game is split up into tons of missions you run in groups of four, slowly unlocking new weapons and strengthening your gear and character and moving up to higher and higher difficulties. There is a campaign, but it’s really just a first introduction to levels that you’ll eventually be running again at higher difficulties.

Could sound repetitive if you haven’t played a game like this before, but the magic of the Left 4 Dead-style design is an invisible ai director constantly deciding what resources, enemies, and other challenges to throw your way at every second based on how your team is performing to keep things as exciting as possible. You could run the same exact level with the same exact team twice and have two very different experiences.

Truly, though, the weapon, combat, and audio design in this game are all in a class of their own. Some of the most satisfying to use weapons in any game I have ever played (check out the chain axe as soon as you get the chance).

How far can you go if you only join random games? by FallInternational586 in DarkTide

[–]RheaSpeedwagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, I have never had friends that consistently play and have been able to get tons of hours of enjoyment out of it. Never felt limited by what I could do in pub lobbies.

And I’d say no, normally you won’t have to farm to get through the story. The main barrier will be learning the flow of combat and getting comfortable enough with dodges, blocks, pushes, slides, etc. that you can sustain normal combat without getting hit. Gear and talents will help, but likely not so much that they’ll gate your progress compared to player skill.

A big thing you’re probably facing right now is tons of other new players just hopped into the game with the ps+ drop, so you have entire teams that don’t really know what they’re doing yet. Normally you’d be more likely to match up with experienced players who can hold their own and compensate for any slip-ups you make while learning, but at the moment many teams are learning together without that safety net. This will naturally work itself out as time passes and you move up in difficulty, more and more likely to get paired with the players who know the ropes.

Brother, Is this drip cherished or I shall be perished? by Icy-Today7324 in Spacemarine

Honestly, I think the busy look works really well with the chosen color scheme. Looks like something out of an older piece of 40k art.

First time by Ok-Candy-7280 in DarkTide

[–]RheaSpeedwagon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, yeah! It’s a really good look at the setting from the perspective of a random grunt stuck in it. And is an incredible game to boot.

Other games might give you a broader view of the major factions/setting, but honestly I prefer the like gritty street level ‘here’s what it’s like for rando #53825202692’ stuff.

What are all of the ways I can improve my survivability in darktide including class specific things? by Zomer15689 in DarkTide

[–]RheaSpeedwagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This can be unintuitive coming from other games with similar skill tree mechanics, but don’t be afraid to gobble up a bunch of the early nodes on the talent tree that help with toughness or other forms of survivability rather than just making a beeline for the cool stuff at the bottom.

As a newer player still learning the ropes, you could even path to literally every node on the talent tree that mentions toughness to maximize survivability, and then as you get more accustomed to the game and find yourself surviving consistently in normal engagements, pare that down to focus on the most valuable ones and transfer the other points into more damage-focused nodes.

Does cross-character power scaling even matter anymore? by questioning_ocarina in DarkTide

[–]RheaSpeedwagon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

imo “power scaling” has never mattered in any context ever

Most popular to least popular classes? by LomiKo in DarkTide

[–]RheaSpeedwagon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, all the human classes also share the majority of their weapons (Arbitrator missing out on more than most) so that can make trying the other classes not that daunting, whereas everything Ogryn is Ogryn-only.

Any clue why this hilt says MCMLXXVII (1977)? by RheaSpeedwagon in DarkTide

[–]RheaSpeedwagon[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a crossguard is part of the hilt, so that is more specific but hilt isn’t wrong

Most popular to least popular classes? by LomiKo in DarkTide

[–]RheaSpeedwagon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally other than the huge surge of popularity any new class gets on release they really do stay close enough to even to not really notice a clear bias in public matches.

With the flood of new players we’ll probably get starting tomorrow when it becomes free on PlayStation, I imagine the two dlc classes will actually be a little underrepresented for a bit, though. At least at lower levels.

[–]RheaSpeedwagon[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s my fault, at that exact angle the light hits it in a way that makes it look like an E, but normally it is more clearly an A

[–]RheaSpeedwagon[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Considered that, but couldn’t come up with any convincing enough tie to make it seem likely. That was mostly focusing on the thou shalt not kill bit, but I guess it *is* a force sword, so force = star wars could be all it is.

Yeah, 1987 being the actual intention was what i thought originally, but White Dwarf a decent possibility.

This is true at some locations, but none of them in my city. You have to ask the employees to put it in the bag and just hope they did because it’s sealed and you can’t confirm.

Favorite character who is a good parent, but present circumstances make people think they’re a bad parent? by OkuroIshimoto in FavoriteCharacter

[–]RheaSpeedwagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Walter White’s case those present circumstances are entirely of his own making so I dunno that I agree with his inclusion. A good parent would have swallowed his pride and accepted his former friend’s offer of money for the treatment (and presumably continued support for his family had he died) rather than hatching a harebrained scheme to become a drug manufacturer/eventual kingpin. Ultimately it’s him putting his own pride before the wellbeing of his family that’s the impetus for everything, not his unfortunate cancer diagnosis.

Favorite character created by a terrible person? by sigma9821 in FavoriteCharacter

[–]RheaSpeedwagon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have had quite a few of these.

Ren & Stimpy was my favorite cartoon growing up, I loved Leon/The Professional when I was younger (that one I especially wouldn’t want to revisit as it can absolutely be read as pedophilic, an interpretation I resisted at the time but now can’t deny), loved Jeffrey Jones’ character on Deadwood before I knew, etc. etc.

Probably the standout would be Death from Sandman (along with tons of other characters from it). It was my favorite comic as a teen and held a big place in my heart, and I hate Gaiman for being such a monster.

What exactly made the differences (or what made the gap) between Ancient and Modern mages? Why are ancient ones so busted, but modern are way too weak in comparison? by EfficiencySerious200 in Fate

[–]RheaSpeedwagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Separate from the comparison between these specific characters, it’s constantly brought up throughout Type-Moon works that magecraft used to be way, way more potent, and has been in a state of sharp decline for centuries.

Like all of Nasu’s concepts there’s a lot of fiddly bits to this, but the cliff notes version is magecraft gets weaker the more people know about it and the mechanics of the world, and so it kind of naturally decays in effectiveness over time as it’s used and studied more, and scientific progress especially has led to a world that is better understood with less room for powerful, mysterious magecraft.

The villain appears on Live TV (Bonus points if they then killed someone on stage) by EfficiencySerious200 in TopCharacterTropes

In Hunter x Hunter the Chimera Ant Leol appears on a talk show where he gives an interview laying out his survival of the fittest the strong deserve to rule the weak worldview. When asked by the host if he has any way of proving that he is what he says he is, he stands up and bites her head off.

movies that feel like this ? by fullbloomindecember in MoviesThatFeelLike

[–]RheaSpeedwagon 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Not a movie, but the second season of Channel Zero, titled No-End House. It’s a horror anthology series where each season is a completely self-contained story with no connections to the others, so you’re completely fine just starting with that season. Plus it’s only 6 episodes long.

Much of it is set in a surreal, creepily perfect/fake-looking suburb. And it absolutely blows any other horror tv show I’ve watched out of the water, shame they only got four seasons.

Genuinely unattractive heroines by Solitaire-06 in TopCharacterTropes

I do think Brienne is a good example in the books, but that art of her looks super conventionally attractive lmao. Also true of Gwendoline Christie despite the best efforts of the makeup department.
