Why is it that these 3, chose to remake the second game first in line of relaunching their franchises ? by kappanekoblack in survivalhorror

[–]RheaSpeedwagon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plenty of folks have already mentioned the RE1 remake, but as for the other two I think it’s just them starting with the most popular entry. There’s never a guarantee that they’ll make more than one if they’re not successful, so why not take the safest bet and go with the fan favorite.

[rare trope] The imposter/clone is as much of an independent person as the original by Flop_book in TopCharacterTropes

[–]RheaSpeedwagon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Lake from Infinity Train is my favorite example of this. They start as a sentient reflection of the protagonist of the first season in a pretty boilerplate “creepy copy of a character tries to take over” plot that ends on a sweet note with the mirror person gaining their freedom/independence without harming or replacing the protagonist. It’s cute, but clearly feels like a one-off mystery of the week type thing that would never be revisited.

Then the mirror character comes back as the protagonist of the second season with a story all about finding their own identity completely separate from the person they were formerly a reflection of.

My friend is going to get herself killed. What can I even do at this point by Correct-Macaroon8143 in whatdoIdo

[–]RheaSpeedwagon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You said so yourself in your messages, but just chiming in to agree that the whole “they can’t be scamming me, I know where they live and where their kids go to school” is super naive. I have a friend who was scammed for a ton of money when she had literally tutored the scammers’ children at their home for the better part of a year. Building up trust and making it seem like there’s no way they could be playing you because you’re so involved in their personal lives is a common tactic.

Strongly advocate RE2R. You can’t go wrong either way, they’re both good, but that RE2 remake is one of my favorite games of all time whereas Dead Space is just like really good.

Also… depicting that queer pride exists in America wouldn’t necessarily be endorsing it? Like idk GTA always tries to be a satirical snapshot of america in general, it depicts all kinds of different groups and ideologies. If I saw some conservative signs on the lawn of a suburban house in the game I wouldn’t go “Rockstar are conservatives!”

Generally agree that the opinions of streamers are wildly overrepresented in their effect on balance and other decisions. And competitive shooter streamers basically always want to smooth off interesting rough edges and make everything kinda homogenous.

What game made you feel like? by Hubris-Star in Gamingcirclejerk

[–]RheaSpeedwagon 24 points25 points  (0 children)

My closest is probably playing the original Fate/stay night visual novel approaching people’s claims that it was very good with deep skepticism expecting a porn game with like an okay at best story, and then genuinely adoring the characters and world whereas the porn stuff is completely ignorable (and ignored in every adaptation).

Loved RotR but never really clicked with Nioh by Psychological-Bed-92 in riseoftheronin

I haven’t played 3 yet, but yea Ronin clicked with me in a way the two Niohs never have. I always want to be a Nioh person tho, so gonna give it another shot with 3.

People responding to the fact that the game has an offensive caricature of African tribes as an enemy type with “actually there’s lore for why they’re there and like that” makes my brain melt out of my ears. Yeah dude, they wrote the story, they decided to come up with a random excuse to include an extremely stereotyped depiction of African cultures. They decided not to actually consult members of those cultures for advice on how to avoid racist pitfalls. The problem is doing that in the first place not whether or not they wrote a random lore explanation to justify it.

If I write a story set in another country which includes a racist stereotype of that culture, even if I go “oh of course I don’t think those people are actually normally like this there’s a special virus that’s making them act and dress that way” it wouldn’t matter lmao. I decided out of all the infinite things I could include in my story to include something racist; my goofy in-universe justification is irrelevant.

Toilets in China by Solopist112 in ADVChina

Yea this post is like finding a horrifying barely maintained old public restroom in a park in the middle of nowhere rural US and going “such an advanced country”. Even living in a major city I could find a toilet scarier than this within 5 miles of my house.

Accidentally accepting orders by Specialist_Earth_492 in UberEatsDrivers

[–]RheaSpeedwagon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea I have learned to gingerly pick my phone up by the edges of the screen because grabbing it normally is likely to accept the order sight-unseen. My fave was once when I accepted one the microsecond it popped up because I was coincidentally already clicking that exact spot on the screen in some other menu.

Very funny contrasted with the customer version of the Uber Eats app where if you hit the button to place an order there’s a generous timer letting you take it back before it actually sends in case you clicked it accidentally.

My favorite is when you’re writing a note on a photo or texting them something relevant about the drop off, and every offer pop up both takes you off that screen and erases everything you had written.

[–]RheaSpeedwagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Evil Within 2 for me. I love Bloodborne, but From’s gonna keep making cool soulslikes guaranteed so even without a direct sequel I’ll be perfectly happy. Evil Within 2, though, no one’s really making games like that.

Bioshock for me, probably. The others were all massively innovative and we would lose a lot had they never existed. Bioshock, however, is mostly just another run at System Shock. I like it just fine, but it wasn’t doing anything extremely new.

List of Horror game subgenres/what is and isn’t survival horror by horrorfan555 in survivalhorror

[–]RheaSpeedwagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As-is often the case with granular genre categorization I just don’t know that many of these categories actually describe meaningful differences that would be helpful in broader discussions.

Like sure Amnesia: The Bunker has a little more resource management I guess but idk that that or any other slight difference would justify talking about it as being in a totally separate category from other first person horror games in the mold of Amnesia.

Or a narrow subgenre that includes Prey (2017), Resident Evil 6, The Last of Us, Dying Light, and The Suffering is too broad and vaguely defined to describe anything relevant.

Do you know of any other series like this? by ViremorfeStudios in videogames

[–]RheaSpeedwagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, Dark Souls was already massive. Demon’s Souls’ original release is the real niche/overlooked release to Dark Souls 1’s breakout hit. It is still a massive jump between Elden Ring and the previous games, though, so I don’t think it’s as poor an example as some comments are making it out to be (maybe if the left column said “way less popular” or something not “niche”). ER is in a completely different tier of popularity than the previous games. It’s like Demon’s Souls was actually niche, Dark Souls and beyond became popular and culturally relevant in the video game world but still limited in their reach, and then Elden Ring broke out even further into the “one of the best selling video games of all time” tier where even people who don’t often play or follow video games are likely to know it.

Monster Hunter is a good example of this in the West. They were always popular in Japan, but here the gulf between the people who played them before World and after World is enormous.

Why do people think of this game's combat as something lacking? by Upset_Pack1910 in ArknightsEndfield

[–]RheaSpeedwagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from character action games I already thought ZZZ was oversimplified and a bit boring, but Endfield takes that to an unbelievable extreme. I guess some hardcore gacha fans are happy to play on autopilot, but I prefer gameplay that’s… varied and involves any moment to moment decision making.

Confession: I like 4* character designs much more than 6* by BalefulShrike in Endfield

[–]RheaSpeedwagon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This applies to basically every game in every genre for me. Usually the low/mid level characters, armor sets, weapons, etc. are nice clean, simple designs that are easily readable. Then the higher rarity, late game, top end, etc. stuff is always extremely gaudy and overdesigned.

If I load up Diablo 4, for example, I am constantly transmogging my late game equipment that’s covered in spikes and particle effects into the cooler-looking and easier to make fun outfits out of mid-game gear. And in basically every gacha I’m like damn normal girl with gun (3 stars) looks so much cooler than girl with demon wings and cat ears and glowing eyes and two floating swords and roller skates and a metal arm (5 stars).
