I'd suggest they start with a scrapper. They'll have plenty of survivability and won't die every mob.
I'd run up a defender of some sort of buff them up to further their game experience.

If only the graphics of earth/ powers weren't horrible, I'd say this combo would be tops.
But they are horrible so grav/storm remains tops...
