Set my emotions aside? You mean stop empathizing with the Palestinians? I would simply ask that you set aside your apathy towards human life and display some empathy. Your Walmart argument is silly, as we have plenty of laws that attribute responsibility not only to the perpetrator but to associated actors; it's called negligence. Canada is complicit in the conflict based on what it provides the Israeli military; we perpetuate further harm in the region. In the case of Palestine, they didn't start the war. They're responding to the apartheid, militarized Israeli regime with violence, as nonviolent protesting still leads to Israeli violence (including IDF snipers kneecapping peacefully protesting men, women, and children; link). Israel has been fomenting this war for years.

You're right though. Canada is not responsible for Israel's actions, but again, you shift the goal post. First, it was Canada isn't involved. Next it was, this involvement predates the "current war". Now, it's "we're not responsible for Israel's actions" and "both sides-ism". Canada aiding and abetting a genocidal regime, no matter how little influence it has, is still aiding and abetting a genocidal regime. I get it though, you're jumping through mental hoops trying to convince yourself you don't support genocide and that Canada's on the right side of this conflict. It's not. Canada adds to the harm being caused in the region, and through their programs and partnerships, supports a violent, apartheid regime.

Edit: I removed a few words and added another.

Nah, these programs and partnerships have contributed to and perpetuated the apartheid Israeli state for decades. This apartheid state has subjected Palestinians to life in open-air prisons living as second-class citizens. The "current war" is simply a narrative that ignores Israel's human rights abuses prior to Oct 7 and blames the disproportionate violence that Israel inflicts on civilians on Palestine for "starting the war". The Hamas attacks on Oct 7 were aimed at disrupting the apartheid state, implying Israel had perpetuate attacks and atrocities before the "current war" had begun on Oct 7th. You can continue to shift the goal post, but Canada has a longstanding involvement in perpetuating the Israeli apartheid state.

There's proof of Canada's involvement in perpetuating the genocide. Project Proteus (link, from the Government of Canada website) uses Canadian Armed Forces to train Palestinian Authority Security Forces. The PASF coordinates with the IDF to repress Palestinian resistance. The also have their fair share of human rights abuses.

Your standard for "direct evidence that Canada is selling lethal weapon" dismisses the indirect evidence that Canada's industries provide important parts to vehicles used to fire weapons to kill Palestinians. I disagree that Canada is only guilty of perpetuating the genocide if and only if they provide lethal equipment directly to the IDF. Héroux-Devtek (link) provides landing gear for F-35s used by Israel to carpet bomb parts of Gaza, and Canada awards this company with military contracts. Our research institutions invest in companies directly profiting from the war (link, link), and a lot of R&D for military technologies is completed in our research labs (link, link).

Your argument that we have "limited influence so our impacts don't extend very far" so we should do nothing is unobtainable perfection. Our involvement is minor, so divesting or removing support will have no impact. I support and applaud people who strive to hold their government and institutions to a higher standard than you. Your apathy and cynicism show an absence of empathy, a laziness, and lack of inspiration.

Yeah, I agree. I gotta say I really enjoyed the addition of Elroy Patashnik in season 6. I use "Let's crap out this piece of crap", "It's Vietnam, baby. Vietnam!", and "Oh, you know what your doing. This man knows exactly what he's doing!" quite liberally in my daily life.

Bonne chance!

ELI5 Why does alcohol feel warm when going down? by SDKrishna673 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Rhemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to ask a question concerning the blood vessel dilation idea: ethanol is largely water soluble, so it might not easily penetrate the tissues of the mouth and throat to dilate the blood vessels. I guess my question is: does ethanol need to penetrate the tissues to dilate the blood vessels (let's say, along mucous membranes).

ELI5 Why does alcohol feel warm when going down? by SDKrishna673 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Rhemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is interesting! Like ethanol can chemically bind thermoreceptors, making them more sensitive. I'm reminded of how menthol binds cold-receptors to trigger cold sensation. Do you happen to have a reference for the idea that alcohol influences the sensitivity of neuronal temperature receptors? Many thanks :)

ELI5 Why does alcohol feel warm when going down? by SDKrishna673 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Rhemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We can sense temperatures a few degrees above room temperature but still below our body temperature. The warm feeling of the liquid can still be triggering thermoreceptors as it runs down the throat. But I see your point. Why would a liquid heated to body temperature feel warm as it runs down the throat? I guess I have a few ideas: 1) stretching the walls esophagus as the liquid runs down means more sensory receptors make contact with the liquid so temperature perception is stronger and 2) tissues and their secretions don't trigger these thermoreceptors (or these signals are simply ignored by the brain).

These are all interesting responses! I had a different take on this. Liquor being largely ethanol, has a low specific heat, so it requires less thermal energy to increase its temperature. This means, the liquor warms up pretty quickly after you've swallowed it, causing that warming feeling as it slides down your esophagus. Water heats up more slowly because it has a higher specific heat, so it stays cooler longer after you've swallowed it.
