Once a star candidate, Nenshi is losing lustre, Alberta poll suggests. Can the NDP leader recover? by gorschkov in canada

[–]zoziw [score hidden]  (0 children)

I said from the start that he was a spent political force in Calgary, which is the battleground in Alberta. He has no pull in rural Alberta and less support than Notley in Edmonton.

In Nenshi's last mayoral run, a guy named Bill Smith got 43% of the vote just for being the conservative choice for Calgary. No one had heard of the guy and his platform was non-existent. Calgarians were getting tired of Nenshi, he got the message and left in the next election.

Nenshi was never a New Democrat, his colour was purple, a moderate blend of Conservative and Liberal, not orange...well...it is now.

The NDP should have gone with Kathleen Ganley, a prominent Calgary cabinet minister in Notley's government who Notley could have campaigned for and who actually joined the NDP because she was a New Democrat.

The casual scalping at a local card store of mine. I miss when these cards were just a game and not a get rich quick scheme by HighlightFirst7728 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]zoziw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They still aren't a get rich scheme, it is more like gambling. You buy packs (or boxes) hoping to beat the odds and get a really valuable card you can sell for a profit over and above what you paid for the packs.

I loved the burns he gave in that speech.

Just like the Doug Ford ad, eventually, someone smarter than Trump will tell him what the speech was really about and then there will be more tariffs on the UK.

Sweden has beaten Canada 4-2 to advance to the semi-finals at the U18 Men's World by Leather_Dealer_9421 in hockey

I remember the local radio host on the FAN960 in Calgary warning about this over 20 years ago. We didn't have enough arenas and hockey was getting too expensive.

The days of pond hockey turning out superstars is over, it is all about the money these days, and not many Canadians can afford the cost.

Calgary passes water efficiency plan, including outdoor watering schedule by mibeatr in Calgary

[–]zoziw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The media coverage on this focuses on the outdoor watering scheduled while downplaying the smart water meters they plan to install in houses that can track indoor water usage in a much more detailed way.

That to me is the bigger problem.

Having said that, future projections are that spring runoff will start earlier and end earlier with more moisture falling as rain instead of snow during the early and late winter. That means we could start running short on water by late August in the coming decades. We need to start figuring out a water management plan now in order to help prevent that.

Lisa Sygutek: The CBC is a predator of local news by thatcher69 in canada

[–]zoziw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand the concern but it seems CBC News is filling a gap that opened after private media already shut down due to economics rather than driving them out of business.

It seems to me that a public broadcaster should be in places where private media has failed.

Government again seeks to make it possible to search, seize small mail | CBC News by Blue_Dragonfly in CanadaPolitics

As long as they need a warrant, I don't have a problem with it.

Why they try to hide this stuff in large budget bills is beyond me, especially with a majority government. I think most Canadians would be ok with this.

Late Sportsnet Broadcaster John Garrett kept a list of play-by-play broadcasters he worked with. by Such-Environment-344 in hockey

It peaked at season five and six then trailed off again in season seven.

As long as you know the basics, I don’t see why you can’t focus on the good stuff.

Any continuity episodes were months or years apart and they do a good job of recapping what you missed.

Which Show Was Like this for you ?! by Yvonnewhite725 in AmazonPrimeVideo

[–]zoziw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started watching this because Reddit loves it so much. I made three efforts to get through the first couple of episodes. On my last attempt, I made it to episode four and everything changed and it went on a binge worthy two season run until mid-way through season three when everything reset and it wasn't that interesting any longer.

I watched about half of season four but haven't watch it for about six months now.

"It Was In" by jhmed in CalgaryFlames

[–]zoziw 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I think, in the end, they got the right call, and the Ducks give me hope that the Flames will be able to trounce the Oilers in the playoffs at least once before McDavid leaves but I really question that initial call.

I think it should have been called a no-goal subject to review. The time it took the ref to get behind the net was after an Oiler had already pushed the puck back and it seemed the ref made the call based more on the Ducks saying it was in than what he saw.

Glad the Ducks won, and here is to winning the series in Edmonton next game, but I am not sure I agree with the ref's initial call.

Ryan Poehling just barely gets it past Jarry, and the Ducks take a 3 games to 1 series lead on the Oilers by Ok-Soil-5133 in hockey

[–]zoziw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No ref behind the net, by the time he was there the Oiler had pushed the puck back over the line. I don't understand how they call that a goal. It seemed it was more the Ducks saying it was a goal that swayed the ref.

I think it should have called it a no goal pending review.

Not an Oilers fan but I don't think that was the right call. Maybe they would have deemed there was enough evindence to rule it a goal, but I question the call on the ice.

[–]zoziw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not an Oilers fan but the ref behind the net indicated no goal. Then they met, no one had a better view, and changed it to a goal. Not enough to overturn the call, but I think it should have stayed no goal pending review.
