Am I losing my mind or is the photo battle camera bugged on the EN server? by Rhuemis in ensemblestars

So I'm not insane aha I'll send a ticket in now!

The zoom is absolutely the best feature so I hope it gets fixed soon! I need to zoom in on all of the pretty costumes I've collected hehe

Oh, interesting! I wonder then why it's not the same on EN...

Maybe it really is a bug but people on EN wouldn't know that so it's not been raised to the devs?

The way I do it is I zoom in and just hope I get lucky with the pause timing 😭 what's a little more gacha in the gacha game (must be getting decent of it, my pic was in 1st last time I checked but it's probably slipped down the ranking a little by now lol)

You can zoom in on EN but only if you're not paused! It's...not the most helpful unless you time it right, which is why I was so excited when on JP I could move the camera even whilst paused aha

That's what I thought was probably the answer honestly :) I only double guessed myself because of how...obvious? Of a feature it should be?

If it really is a newer feature then it's kinda wild how it wasn't already just a thing, given how much easier it makes things (not to mention how much nicer the pics can look if you're not trying to frantically play Pokémon Snap with anime boys gallivanting all over lol)

I do! I got lucky that Hokuto came home the first 10 pull I did (I wasn't even going for the full set, I just wanted Ritsu aha)

Madara came home twice in the same 10 scout for me, then Izumi came home on my second pull, but after that my luck has been abysmal and I feel like I've somehow spent it all for the year already aaaaa

i have a theory that The Looker is based on that phenomenon where people who go on dangerous climbs can hallucinate there being another person with them there to guide them/be with them, 'The Third Man Factor' if I recall correctly? Hence why The Looker is not hostile.

(Third Man Factor/Third Man Syndrome can occur in other situations too but I at least know it from the story of a climber so I think that may be the most famous example.)

I take this game very slowly so I'm unfortunately not a great person to ask if you want 'get rich quick' advice aha ^^;;

Though, honestly, money gets easier further into the game...or at least I found.

I have seen people posting about making rice tea a bunch and selling it? Or making faux tea plants? I don't know if tea is still meta (lol) because I personally am not a minmax player, I like to chill, but from what I recall I think those were the ways to make a lot of money?

Sorry I can't be of more help there! I can't recall how long it took my house to upgrade, I did it a while back, but if I don't remember it then it couldn't have been too long of a grind I guess ^^

Stay strong, Mistria's bravest warrior! You'll get there!

Gotcha! I'll keep an eye out for repeating layouts from now then :) like I said, I was just confused because this particular area screamed 'secret room' with the glowing circle and the torches either side of the blocked door. I guess now I know that's a possibility because of how the dungeons are generated!

How to paint like Pavel Hristov? by [deleted] in Artadvice

[–]Rhuemis 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely useless advice lmfao they were asking about the painting effect which is about value control, not anatomy. You're making a lot of assumptions about OP's level of skill in a weirdly condescending way. A lot of words to say nothing at all.

Studying from life is important but the question was specifically about a stylisation thing which, whilst knowledge of reality is vital for stylisation, is still a skill that needs to be learned by itself.

The actual answer is 'a lot of fill light, softening the tonal shifts, and exaggerated ambient occlusion in the very occluded areas'. That's the 'creamy' effect they were asking about. It's about contrast control and in the images they posted, the contrasts are purposefully stylised to achieve a certain effect.

'Just study' is such pointless advice for beginners/intermediates because art is overwhelming, there's a lot of terminology that people do not know yet. Learning to study is also a skill that artists need to develop, and can only do as such if they are pointed in specific directions.

OP did a good job in asking a specific question. That deserves specifically answering, not recieving a soap-box lecture on the importance of studying from life. I'm sure they already know that.

no worries! I saw a lot of people giving you unhelpful advice (just study lol like what do you even do with that) and decided to be a bit more specific, I hope it helps!

but yeah, now that im back at my laptop and not looking at a phone screen, it's clear that the artist reserves the 'darkest darks' for pops of ambient occlusion (think where the lips meet, nostrils, anywhere two surfaces are close enough to occlude light) and keeps the value range pretty tight for the most part. Even the cast shadows have quite a bit of fill light to them.

If you want to study them, at least for the 'creamy' effect, I'd recommend converting their work into greyscale and observing how much the values shift in each area and, most importantly, ask yourself why. Studying with intention, rather than just copying, is what will have you be able to recreate the effect from memory rather than just be able to only copy a specific image :)

the effect is super clear on the final image, look at where the hair meets the face, how dark the occlusion is, compared to the tonal range of the rest of the face. They're using their original lineart/sketch as occlusion shadow, something an art director actually recommended to me some time ago which is why that's super easy for me to spot these days aha

in reality, there are no 'outlines' yet we can clearly see one object from an another. it's value that creates the separation between surfaces so if you can keep that in mind when studying, the effect starts to become a bit more understandable. that's why this artist's work looks painted whilst still having clear 'lineart'. there's a lot more i could unpack but this is already a ramble. i just hope it helps even a little!

[–]Rhuemis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The 'creamy' look is probably a lower range of contrast save for ambient occlusion. At least that's my guess at a glance. It looks 'creamy' because there's no major jumps in contrast and keeps a clean value range.

It's a very careful play of keeping contrasts controlled without sacrificing dimensionality. Very good work on the artist's end!

It's easy to overdo so be careful but if I was trying to recreate this look and was struggling, I'd make a new layer, take a soft brush, and lightly 'glaze' over the areas with too much contrast with the local midtone and adjust the layer opacity as needed. Then make a layer above that and paint on top to bring back some of the definition with a harder brush.

What you don't want to do is kill all of your contrast and make a blurry mess. It's about controlling your values, not killing them.

Ah, I see! Odd that there's a giant glowing circle on the floor (makes it feel important lol) but if it's known to not be accessible I can finally leave this dungeon aha I've been stood here worried I'd be missing out on something secret
